do not buy tarantulas as pets, I bought a few tarantulas and now I have an itchy throat and its been 2 and a half years since I've had my last tarantula. I think I got the itchy throat from the brachapelma bohmei that is the culprit for the itchy throat. I started coughing violently a week after i first got the b. bohmei. ever since then the coughing went away but I still have a icthy throat.

A tip... Never put your hand into a C.C's terrarium, when it's sleeping! Suddenly it will wake up, run like hell and be really grumpy.

@thechronic100 Brachypelma Smithi's usually docile and holdable. The 'hairs' don't even irritate some people, but other people get little welts and are itchy. It's up to you whether you want to handle it or not. Just use something to test first like a small paint brush.

@Bligh92 Sometimes it takes them a while to get adapted to their new home. The can go a long time with no food, so don't worry, she's not starving. Just keep offering occasionally, but don't keep the food in her cage if she doesn't eat.

@dwayne2k7 lol nooooo far from it, these are a very miss-understood animal :P if anything there very gentle and sensitive =] if they did bite it would be half hour of stinging if that then a bit of itching for a couple hours n done end off :P yea some tarantulas will put you in unbareble pain for a week or so but there not in any sence dangerouse, if anything there venom is helpful, there even using it for medical treatment 4 variouse illneses youll be suprized what youll find out with these :P

Meh, I don't like Rose Hairs. They tend to be a bit more unpredictable than B. smithi or A. Avicularia. I had one that would be fine with me in the enclosure one day, and out to kill the next.

Great vid, cjam12. My first T was a Chilean Rose-haired T. His name was Bruno and he was the best. Although he only lived in my care for two months (he was old) he was a great pet. Extremely docile.

Nice video, though I would recommend pointing out that if it is chosen to handle tarantulas, they should be held close to the ground, as a fall from standing up for most people is likely to kill or injure the tarantula.

If you just want to decide between grammostola rosea(rose hair) and the brachypelma smithi, I would go for the smithi, it is almost as calm as a rosea, but looks better, However you could look at other species like a acanthoscurria geniculata. The geniculata is a large spider that grows fast and therefore molts often. Its also a huge food lover, and will eat if food is offered. It will flick some hairs when startled, but often calms down if you move slow and careful.

A couple of tips are:

1 Use the latin name for them, wich makes it easier to find caresheets and info.

2 In general dont handle them. All tarantulas can bite, and some flick hairs.

3 Ask if you cant find info, there are always somebody who knows .

I've held a tarantula on my hand before. It was at a place called the Butterfly Previlian. The spider's name is Rosey. The sensation of the the spider on my hand was incredible, its feet felt cold but soft at the same time. It didn't move at all, just sat there enjoying the warmth coming off my hand, lol. I believe Rosey was a Chilean Rose Tarantula.
