  • Actually Steve didn't come up with the Packet of 3 until 1985 when he returned to the UK and reunited with Jim Leverton and Fallon Williams as a 3-piece. At that time, the band was being billed as Steve Marriott & The Pie or at times as Humble Pie. Although I didn't do the Australian tour, I was Steve's road manager for most his US gigs from 82-85. Jim Leverton was replaced by Keith Christopher on bass. Keith played was the original bass player for the Georgia Satellites.

  • I saw Steve up at the Prospect Hill in Melbourne around this time with Fallon on drums. What a fantastic show and persona. Incidentally I worked with Fallon recently and imho he's still very much got it! I posted a video with Fallon on drums in the studio, it's in the video response bit on this page.

    Cheers

    bb

  • i saw him at the family in at rydalmere in 1982,it was billed as steve marriots humble pie,

    definetely!!

    great show,saddly missed!!

  • I know I'm being petty and it's all about the voice, but I really hate Steve's mullet and farmer coveralls phase. Just 15 years before this, he'd been the sharpest looking mod on the planet.

  • Steve Marriot and Fallon Williams, far out jammed at Mckinnon hotel with Fallon had not a clue he was in this guy`s band, what a privielidge to jamm with his vocal`s out front you could not help but be inspired.

  • Steve did tour as Humble Pie in both 82 and 83.

This is the 82 lineup which included Goldy McJohn organist from Steppenwolf.

The 83 lineup were 2 unknowns from Atlanta and drummer Fellon Williams who Steve had picked up in Chicago for the 82 tour.

After some 1983 shows with the Atlanta guys, Steve brought back Jim Leverton (Fat Mattress) and with Fallon Williams the new trio (similar to the 1982 quartet but without Steppenwolf's McJohn) were renamed Packet of Three (as in a packet of 3 condoms).

  • @AgentOfSTERANKO Thanks for taking the time to provide that great information.

    Tony

Nice to see the condensation coming out his mouth.

I saw them in '82 at the Royal Antler (if memory serves correct) where he utterly kicked arse

He was the most powerfull vocalist I'd ever seen.

    Tragic, hey sunshine, eh?

    "Love Ya"

    Regards and thanks

  • Was this one of Steve's last concerts? I can remember hearing he passed on the radio on the way to work one day. That was the last hear of him in Detroit anyway.

Wish I would have had a chance to see Humble Pie back in the day.

  • Nope, not one of his last. He died in 1991.

  • Steve, loved his soulful gospel voice. Shame he died in a fire.

  • merry christmas Australia , enjoy your summer , i luv the pie a later song could be . " Just a fool f prety face " . / /

  • saw them in 81'.they opened for ted nugent.pie

blew nugent of the stage.the "nuge" was laughable that night.

  • Me too in Toledo Ohio Nugent was a joke and has been ever since. Why Steve why?

  • Fabulous guitar tone. Steve was grand. So what if he had a few; he's having a good time and so is everyone else.

  • Oh, yea! Thanks for this great post!

  • Drunk, stoned, coked out, what difference does it make? Just listen to the song one more time. Where else are you gonna get that? Huh? Nowhere, man! That little shit...

    Well...

    He was somethin' else!

  • Whoa. Lets not go overboard with the pissed up comments ere. They probably plied them with the stuff before he went on. Marriott was an awesome talent and a performer of the highest order, alas with all that said , he was also his own worst enemy at times and did some outrageous things. He lived the life of TEN musicians.

  • Firstly I think it´s an abuse to every audience to go on stage in a drunk shape. No respect at all - and of course not being able to play in that self controlled way like it should be. Secondly Goldy McJohn does a real poor job on the Hammond. Was he pissed?

  • So that means we were wrong to get pissed up in the audience does it, all that time rehearsing for us and I drank a bottle of Captain Morgans with my mates how disrespectful of us...

  • .... Yes! And by the way: you had to rehearse for these two harmony tunes?

  • sunphuk is right - this is The Packet of Three not Humble Pie

  • Wonder if their is more footage from this show. Havn't seen this before.

  • I saw steve in London 1990 but in 1983 I was totally pissed of because we played at the Bridgeway the Night Steve played Ponde and the next night we played at Ponde and he did the Bridgeway. Still not over missing these shows grrrrrr

    Thanks for the post Mouldytone

  • Original, STEPPENWOLF keyboardist, GOLDY McJOHN, really rises' and shines' with Marriott on this performance!!!

  • isnt this the era of the "pack of three"??

  • I believe it was. The "About This Video" section of this page has some further thoughts re the use of the Humble Pie name by concert promoters. Against the wishes of Steve Marriott from what I`ve read.

  • Yeah, Steve was trying to avoid using the Humble Pie moniker and called his trio "Packet of Three" aka "The Official Receivers". Steve Marriott and the DT's is worth checking out also.

  • How did steve Pass?He was and Icion,In my Book!

  • I can only assume that you're referring to his untimely death. As I've heard it he flew back to the UK after spending some time recording in the states with his old bandmate Pete Frampton and he and the wife were staying at a friend's house. They had an argument and Steve took a cab home. He was smoking in bed and must have fallen asleep. His 16th century cottage went up in flames.

  • Wow that's really a great performance, Marriott in much better shape than 3 years later.

  • If only Steve "The Great" had been around in another 14 years to visit Australia again. RIP Steve Marriott you certainly kicked a***

  • Awesome. Was that a Hell's Angel in the beginning? What's the name of this song by the way?

  • Thanks for commentating on the clip. I`m not 100% certain but I believe that the Ponde music festival was/is? organized by The Hells Angels. I`m sorry but I don`t know the name of the song.

  • Ha,ha. Of course I meant thanks for "commenting" on the clip. Although I suppose "commentating" sort of works as well!

  • This song is called "Big Train" or "Big Train Stops at Memphis". Great footage, I had never seen this.
