This is how the Ultimaker works. The complication is the filament is being pushed from far away so you need a long straw to guide the filament I think.
Funny, a friend of mine pointed me in this direction (independent of you) and then I found out that you also though of exactly this approach!

We're actually prototyping this currently. We'll update you. B.t.w. the rods don't need to be double rods because the design has some axial rigidity when using two crossing bars.
