It never offended me as a child & I so just want & love the old school as it was also! In fact Sesame Street was for embracing differences, realizing that folks were more alike than different on the inside & breaking down stereotypes. Thanks for posting this mstatz!
I remember this, especially the name 'Bosco.' I wonder if the Beatiful harpsichord music in the Background was composed by Bach, Beethoven, or Brahms! Thanks Bountifully!
I remembered this cartoon well & here's a little theory on this cartoon,
They used the sentence "A little BROWN Boy" Instead of "A little BLACK Boy (remember this came out from the late 1960's during the time of the Civil Rights movement & Sesame Street didn't wanted to offended anyone with this cartoon.) Even though today BROWN is now a considered term for Hispanic people.
The thing is, little kids are literal. I remember seeing that as a preschooler and going, yeah, he is BROWN (not "black"). It's just sad that the tv execs don't give kids today enough credit.
I've seen a "Vegetable Soup" clip on here that talks about skin color and melanin. I do wonder if something like that would be made now, or at least worded same way.
I wasn't around in the 70s, but it seems to me that it was a brief period when people were attempting to talk about race constructively. The PC rules were well intentioned but have ended up hurting dialogue rather than helping it.
We Americans can never seem to get this race thing right---it's really messed up.
RE: the alphabet soup one, I agree, I hope it was a mistake and someone there actually knows the difference. You're lucky you saved a copy of the original, I got 2 copies on tape before the DVD and both of them had "bonus fx" added
Cheer up,maybe they'll eventually put this on other old school volumes.I REALLY hope the put Little Jerry and the Monotones on another old school dvd. They haven't been getting much attention on merchandice like videos lately.:(
I'm African American, and I remember this animation fondly. I still think it's delightful. 'Brown' describes the little boy -- end of story....

This looks like Jim Simon's animation (Loaf of bread, I'm 6 year old, etc).

Yeah, I don't blame you that they probably shouldn't have said brown boy (cuz it might sound a little bit racist).

..Then mamma bounded in and bounced a big birch branch off the boy's bottom.
I don't think "brown boy" is that big a deal, but the show tended to go out out of it's way to avoid being controversial at times. Great clip!

I have a feeling that they know they're brown. Just a hunch.

But "brown boy" is better than saying the N word.
wattamack4 4 years ago 2
I meant to say PC means "political correctness". I don't think Sesame Street would use the N word (LOL).
mstatz 4 years ago
True, since it's a kids show they wouldn't be swearing lol.

BTW,why would you think that they'd never air this again just because of the "brown boy" incident?Would that be considered racious today?
wattamack4 4 years ago
Absolutely!!! In today's political climate (PC), any mention of racial differences is considered racist.
mstatz 4 years ago
That sure is true.

See the forest for the trees, guys. The DVD was still a great release and we need to encourage them to do more.

Good point! Botched segments are better than no segments at all!
