It's funny that when we're talking about running a country many seem to think that any fool is suited for the job. In fact, many prefer a "politician just like me". Would they say the same about their physician, carpenter or plumber? Personally, I prefer an elite surgeon and I prefer that government officials belong to an elite as well.
