So much fluff made over Kwan's "program" but coming from behind, this victory was made that much sweeter. Tara was just head and shoulders above the competition in every way!

I'm not a huge Tara fan but I like this program a lot--the music is so grand and the idealistic quality of it suited her very much at the time. Great speed and coverage all around the rink. I like when Scott says "the American women take the spiral sequence very seriously." YES, WE DO!!! And still do, if nothing else.
I had actually never heard of Tara until I watched a biography of Michelle Kwan's life. It's sad how Kwan never got gold during the olympics, but I loved watching Tara dance. She looked like a tiny pixie dancing to Anastasia's soundtrack. :)
Why do so many of Kwan's fans feel the need to go to the clips of other skaters to leave insults? Just because one person is talented does not mean they are the only one with talent.
I think placement of skate affected the award of the Gold....Tara was young but still a little "trickster",,,skating is much more than tricks,,,Michelle was a more complete package..MUCH more maturity with technical ability....she should have gotten the Gold....

The fix was in for God's sake...the judges did everything possible aside from just hanging the Gold around Kwan's neck so she could skate with it on...Kwan was timid...tentative...and very sure that she had that medal in the bag...Tara BLEW her away...and it took very little breath for Tara to do so...Tara didn't have the advantages and favortism...in fact she was all but 'just there'.....Thank God for the Olympic judges...this isn't nats...it's the BIG TIME!!!

I never liked this program very much, but she skated very well to it. Michelle's Rachmaninoff was much more mature and classier. Personal taste aside, Tara blew through the whole competition here and deserved the gold. She went for it when it counted and earned a very sweet victory.
@allenglandlawns While watching the 98 Olympics back in the day and seeing Tara do this program I recall thinking that she would give the pre-ordained winner Kwan a run for the gold at these olympics. Which is exactly what happened.
I just cruised thru a video of Kwan's short and ANY comment that wasn't gushing and swooning was spammed rapidly. I have noticed it on many of Kwan's videos but other skaters are fair game and that's the way it should be I think. If Kwan is so great, marvelous, the best ever, WHY does she need so many vicious defenders and I do mean vicious. I have to admit that dress is hideous. I just did not understand Tara's fashion sense then. Boy, did she make some huge fashion mistakes. I'm sure it's embarrassing for her to look back on the dresses that she wore. I would hate for my Olympic program to be remembered in this dress.

Tara is so cute and this program is just pure delight! The commentators were right on when they said missed the triple 3 times in warmup but when it counted she delivered-the mark of a true champion. To me, this tiny skater exemplies the Olympic spirit and that yellow outfit is perfect for her and this program. WOW! And isn't that lady commentator's giggle just precious at the end of Tara's performance.
Although I have to say it's a bit disturbing to hear Scott Hamilton talk about the "American Women"... remember, he's talking about a 15 year old here!!!!

Michelle is all about perfection, her moves are so well excecuted. I suppose that results in her getting higher marks. However, Tara skates with such joy you can tell she really enjoys herself so much! :D

I wasn't a Tara fan, but she got a bad rap mostly because of her tiny size. She was a runt, and it made her look younger than she was. Her jumps were small, well, SHE was small. Did she cheat her double axels? No. Her biggest problem was her flutz.
However, she soundly beat Michelle Kwan that night. Absolutely no doubt about it.
Well, I see some of what you're saying but Tara also *emphasized* her youth.I mean, she wore a dirndl in this SP! It's a cute program but the critics who call her junior-ish are right.I'm not saying she should be a femme fatale, that would look silly, but do something besides remind us how young (& by implication, how precociously amazing) you are. I groaned when they raised the age, knowing that now Tara & her mom were too thrilled that she would alwaysalways be the youngest gold medalist ever.
I thought this was her best performance of this program. She really got in character. People give her flak on her presentation but she really did pay attention to the details here.
I agree with you. I think Kwan is the greatest of all time, and I was quick to dismiss Tara, but I now see that she does have tremendous talent. The girl was 15, and her smoothness and spirals (along with technique) speak for themselves. Let's face it, if she wasn't artistic at all, the judges would have ripped her apart (most of them were from Europe or Asia). The girl deserves credit here.

I'll give you any crap I want...if you don't know about flutzing then you're not very smart about skating, and I could care less what you have. I got as far as a triple axel before I got injured and had to retire!
Kwan and Chen were in their own league artistically; Lipinski couldn't come close to matching them, she was a little girl competing against two ladies. BUT: She absolutely deserved the gold because she WENT FOR IT technically: She went for the triple flip in the SP; and in the LP she did the triple loop-triple loop when Kwan didn't even attempt a triple triple, and chen didn't do a very clean triple-triple. And, Lipinski did a second jump sequence featuring two triples. Gutsy when it counted!
She had a bad flutz in this program. I don't think it comes close to Michelle's Rach SP. That said, I think Tara is better than most skaters skating today. I agree she brings a lot of joy to her skating that we never see nowadays and her spiral positions and overall lines are better than most if not all of the current crop.
How anyone can say that Tara did not deserve to win at this Olympics is beyond me. This short programme was a joy to watch (as was her long); the joy on her face as she lands each jump and the sheer excitement as she performance the final step sequence just makes me smile. Someone who truly LOVES what they are doing, that's what I see when I watch Tara skate.
I know what you mean. At the time of Tara so many skaters who competed where exciting, the differetn skating tour shows were sooo exciting. Now its getting not boring but not as exciting.

Leading up to Nationals and the Olympics, I do feel that Kwan was underscored at some events (2000/2001 Worlds LPs, Grand Prix EOE, etc.). Remember when Irina ran off the stage after her scores came up in tears after Kwan deserved to beat her at the 2000/2001 Worlds? Not everyone is perfect...

I never liked this program very much, but she skated very well to it. Michelle's Rachmaninoff was much more mature and classier. Personal taste aside, Tara blew through the whole competition here and deserved the gold. She went for it when it counted and earned a very sweet victory.

I just cruised thru a video of Kwan's short and ANY comment that wasn't gushing and swooning was spammed rapidly. I have noticed it on many of Kwan's videos but other skaters are fair game and that's the way it should be I think. If Kwan is so great, marvelous, the best ever, WHY does she need so many vicious defenders and I do mean vicious. God forbid a critical word reach her ears..her parents screened her mail in 2006 to protect her from maybe a reality check? Wonder if they still do.

She could have gone to college because her skating career was pratically done in when she was 19. However, she seemed to realize that she was not cut out for college. Tara is so cute and this program is just pure delight! The commentators were right on when they said missed the triple 3 times in warmup but when it counted she delivered-the mark of a true champion. To me, this tiny skater exemplies the Olympic spirit and that yellow outfit is perfect for her and this program. WOW! And isn't that lady commentator's giggle just precious at the end of Tara's performance.

the only thing that I could see that was "bad" in her program was her spiral sequence. she didn't stay long enough in the different possisions.

I wasn't a Tara fan, but she got a bad rap mostly because of her tiny size. She was a runt, and it made her look younger than she was. Her jumps were small, well, SHE was small. Did she cheat her double axels? No. Her biggest problem was her flutz.
However, she soundly beat Michelle Kwan that night. Absolutely no doubt about it.

Well, I see some of what you're saying but Tara also *emphasized* her youth.I mean, she wore a dirndl in this SP! It's a cute program but the critics who call her junior-ish are right.I'm not saying she should be a femme fatale, that would look silly, but do something besides remind us how young (& by implication, how precociously amazing) you are. I groaned when they raised the age, knowing that now Tara & her mom were too thrilled that she would alwaysalways be the youngest gold medalist ever.

I agree with you. I think Kwan is the greatest of all time, and I was quick to dismiss Tara, but I now see that she does have tremendous talent. The girl was 15, and her smoothness and spirals (along with technique) speak for themselves. Let's face it, if she wasn't artistic at all, the judges would have ripped her apart (most of them were from Europe or Asia). The girl deserves credit here.

How refreshing to 'hear' a Kwan fan admire Tara's performance. Kwan performed well, but quite simply Tara's programme pipped her in difficulty. The judges GAVE her that gold. Not Tara's fault.

Kwan and Chen were in their own league artistically; Lipinski couldn't come close to matching them, she was a little girl competing against two ladies. BUT: She absolutely deserved the gold because she WENT FOR IT technically: She went for the triple flip in the SP; and in the LP she did the triple loop-triple loop when Kwan didn't even attempt a triple triple, and chen didn't do a very clean triple-triple. And, Lipinski did a second jump sequence featuring two triples. Gutsy when it counted!

She had a bad flutz in this program. I don't think it comes close to Michelle's Rach SP. That said, I think Tara is better than most skaters skating today. I agree she brings a lot of joy to her skating that we never see nowadays and her spiral positions and overall lines are better than most if not all of the current crop.

How anyone can say that Tara did not deserve to win at this Olympics is beyond me. This short programme was a joy to watch (as was her long); the joy on her face as she lands each jump and the sheer excitement as she performance the final step sequence just makes me smile. Someone who truly LOVES what they are doing, that's what I see when I watch Tara skate.
