  • I have literally been listening to this song every time I turn on my I-pod, since I've seen this video, Thank you!

  • HaHa Dave but seriously where are the other 3 to 4 guitars?

  • so much rhythm in that right hand

  • this is my favorite song

  • @MysticDMBherb i thought this exactly same thing when i was learning the best of what`s around, tripping billies, so much to say and dreamgirl.. the mix of the guitar and the voice lines are unique.. dave is a gifted men, he write songs like no one does... dmb rocks!

  • beauty has 6 strings and a golden face

  • the only thing that keeps me from mastering this song is the fact my fucking wrist gets mad sore after 3 and a half minutes. sweet jesus

  • i just learned how to play this song. took about a half hour, then i tryed to sing with it. haha no fuckin way.

  • on both hands lol

  • you clowns...he just has a great fifth finger which most guitarists dont......dont overcomplicate

  • the challenge isnt being able to play someone elses song, it isnt being able to write your own song. Its being able to write your own "good" song, that is the real challenge, and old dave has a few.

  • i love how youtube comments end up being pissing contests lmao

  • @poopingfondly poopingfondly :) love the name :)))

  • Its simple to master. lol. just practice, practice and practice. I wish i had a cam to show you people some dave matthews guitar lessons 101. All His early music is fairly simple. Only thing really techical is mostly from everyday, its not his usual chord structures and progressions. You have to have long fingers and be able to stretch , that where I believe trouble come for some people. Stretch the fingers and they will become fleixible. Love this sond, definetely in my Dave top ten!

  • @inutdeivoluntasfiat I understand that learning someone else's song is easy but writing this song is the most impressive thing. Think about it this song came out of his head he didn't watch someone else play it, he made it up.

  • @zoey8068 Im sure it didnt come 100% out of his head. Im sure he would even admit that. All musicians are inspired and influenced. If you know tim reynolds you know that this riff that dave plays could easily be a tim reynolds riff. Not saying dave stole it, dave is the man. Just saying.

  • @inutdeivoluntasfiat well said man

  • I just cannot master playing this.... frustrated!

  • Songs badass

  • Nasty..,..

  • this only song by him i cant play. idek why. Curse u and ur huge hands!!!!!!!!!

  • I love how casual he is, immediately after the last note he grabs the mug and takes a sip

  • I'm learning this song right now and every time I come back to this to reference it, I just get angry at how great it sounds and how much work I have haha!

  • I've tried to learn this on the guitar. It's not terribly complex but it requires a TON of practice. It's not a song you can just "pick up".. The timing makes it very tough for me. The singing along with it is what always gets me.

  • @REalTri4Lyfe - apparently Dave wrote this song right after his sister's death while she was in SAfrica. She was murdered by her husband. Her husband then killed himself...this song is suppossed to be written from the husband's perspective...that is why it sounds like a madman's (beautiful) rantings...

  • This is the kind of thing that Dave probably thought of in a dream and then did by ear upon waking....

  • Solid Dave! One of the single most ingenious ever conceived and brilliantly performed song of my generation by a virtuoso guitar player/song-writer. Magnificent!

  • Amazing...he makes it look so easy to play this song...pure talent!

  • from a guitarists POV, how he sings on top of playing that verse riff is just amazing

  • @speedball1919 totally agree..........I've practiced enough to the point of getting the guitar part down pretty exact, but I dont think i could ever even dream of singing over it at the same time

  • @108hanlon

yeah, it took me FOREVER to be able to sing and play. and it will never sound as good as this

  • @dpavalok9 haha who cares how it sounds, just being able to sing and play it at the same time without skipping a beat is impressive enough

  • do it again dave...(dave mothers words)...!!

  • Just incredible. I remember tuning into Charlie Rose and seeing this and going "Who is this guy?" and then learning it was Dave Matthews whose band I've never liked (and still don't) but this clip alone shows his brilliance.

  • @MrNEOFUT Yea, all of Charlie Rose's interviews with him/them are great.

  • Does it get any better?

  • I <3 Dave.

  • he is perfect. literally perfect.

  • FUCKIN GENIUS ON DISPLAY....respect the talent, bitches.

  • If you've ever tried to learn this on guitar, it makes you wonder how the fuck he even wrote this song

  • @MysticDMBherb

I know right?! Fuckin difficult to sing and play at the same time

  • @MysticDMBherb AMEN...I have learned this on guitar, and it makes me scratch my head. I can play it just fine, but imagining writing lyrics to this is just mind boggling.

  • @MysticDMBherb this along with satellite are exceptionally tough

  • @MysticDMBherb dude im trying to learn this song on guitar and right when he starts singing its sooo confusing

  • @MysticDMBherb I know... how many years has it been now and I still struggle with it, he's too good :)

  • He's not the greatest singer or the greatest guitar player but the result is quite amazing and creative. Dave is a true artist!

  • @cyberprunes well put, ive always loved his playing style. truely unique

  • phenomenal guitar playing.

  • Brilliant.

  • dave is my idol for music, he helped me find my own style of not only playing guitar (along with tim reynolds) but he helped me find my singing voice, because i've been singing along since i was born. dave fan for life!

  • True the arrangement of this song is beautful and I hadn't even thought of the lyrical content. The guitar is disguntingly good.

  • there must be two completly crazy people out there

  • @AGoonToAGoblin8 You should get a grammy nomination for being a jackass. I was being sarcastic when I said he should make a whole album...I've been listening to Dave since 4th grade and even if I never heard of him don't you think I would have noticed that there are 40 videos of Dave Matthews on the right side of the screen and gotten a pretty good idea that he's already famous. Maybe you should be calling yourself an idiot.

  • wow this guy should make a whole cd. he's actually pretty good.

  • Anyone know where I can find the tabs to this song?

  • Its very possible that this is the best song EVER. Absolutely amazing.

  • This is my favorite song by him, and possibly of all time.

  • Simply beautiful, this has always been one of my favorite DMB songs, and this version is spectacular.

  • lovely to ears and soul ...Dave has a gift from somw where in the universe!

  • The most beautiful and emotional song ever written by man kind...

  • Spectacular

  • best "dave" song

  • @lindberg dave also doesn't need more than 4 chords , but he uses them just with creativity

  • @draingutter You make a valid point. There is nothing wrong with simple chord progressions. Proudest Monkey is a 7 minute tune that only uses a single chord. In saying "4-chord auto-tuned bull shit," I am simply referring to the generic formula used in pop songs.

  • as amazing as his fingers are moving, I cannot look away from his eyebrows... I love Dave.

  • apart from all the genius of this song..

even his finger movement looks so incredible..looks totaly stupid when i do it..:D

  • this man has my heart. forever.

  • 2 people have an stone as heart

  • to everybody that's wondering how to play it, go to dmbtabs dot com

  • yes, exactly as someone else said.. it is a BITCH to play and sing. there aren't many credible covers on youtube etc. john mayer have a go then?? ha ha. unique dave song. but it is even tough for dave live-check the vid with tim when he furiously shakes his hand at the end-whoooa that hurt!

  • @blackfrancis55 good to know it's not just me/us who hurts their hand playing this!! ;)

  • @bestinhouse I agree. It's only difficult if you're not familiar with Dave's style, how his right hand never stops moving. I had to learn a few easier ones before this one. The hardest thing about playing Dave is making it sound like Dave, it's all about the strumming/picking hand, at least I think.

  • Actually, it's fairly easy to play on guitar (after about a week of working on it). But its the devil's own bitch to play it and sing it as smoothly as he does. Kind of like rubbing your tummy and patting your head at the same time. Actually, I think the right and left hemispheres of his brain have a few more extra connections, compared to me...

  • You could probably throw G major in there as well

  • Comment removed

  • make more songs please........

  • My kingdom to sing with Dave before I die.

  • Dave should never let anyone make him feel less than what he is. This song, to me is a confession of his weakness and what he wishes he could be. Fuck those pieces of shit, you are Dave Fucking Matthews. You are a Brilliant musician. They can never do what you do with a guitar. They should feel less than you, not vice versa.

  • I could watch him play this all day....sigh.....

  • fucking perfect...I am still waiting for another Stone, and I'll wait until I die!

  • I remember watching this on Charlie Rose, probably in 1999 or 2000. Gives me chills and I love the Elvis bit.

  • Just watching this gave me Arthritis.

  • I love this man more than one heterosexual man should love another... But still you all aren't allowed to judge me because you know when he gets to break at the end you all have to change your pants

  • @Progressionification Oh, I see, you gotta one-up me.

  • Pure genius.

  • I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I love this man as much as one heterosexual male can love another!

  • this song makes my head explode.

  • To Sing Sooo Perfectly While playing a guitar part with such a difficult rythem and timing, he is not even on the same level as any other singer songwritters when it comes to playing and singing at the same time..... Soooooo Gooood, technically one of the best songs ever in my opnion. has everything, Awesome Lyrics, Awesome Sounding guitar part, thats difficult. actually put some time into this...not just strumming chords. GOD hes Brilliant.

  • I'll always remember you, Dave...

  • and to imagine that he didn't think he could be the lead-singer...turns out he is amazing, and he also was recently quoted as saying he thinks he is a mediocre musician. Amazing talent and amazing person.

  • This video gives me a whole new respect for him as a musician, as if i didn't already give him enough. What a brilliantly written song.

  • One of my fav performances..voice is mesmerizing

  • so haunting....

  • He is the best-- My favorite live performance --thanks Dave!!!

  • Digging the Elvis bit at the end.

  • rhis is his RCA demo tour...95..

  • my favorite performance of The Stone

  • I remembered seeing this on Charlie Rose and thinking I like Dave Matthews, and then he played this to close the show. Then I loved Dave Matthews.

The insane guitar playing, sonorous voice and beautiful, despairing lyrics. The whole package. Incredible talent.

  • He is just the best...theres no way around it...haters hate, dave matthews is the MAN

  • I´ve seen this clip about a million times, and I will probably see it a million more.... I saw him live recently, almost started to cry. This truly is an amazing mucisian!

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

  • wow man fucking awesome voice and instrumental

  • love it! going to see him and tim at constitution hall...will throw up if he plays this:)

  • this is pretty badass.......

  • How someone can up with a song this genius is beyond me...instrumentally alone it is genius, and the lyrics are brilliant on a whole different level. Truly an artist in a modern world full of 4-chord auto-tuned bull shit.

  • @lindberg711 Amen!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @genericaccount1967 In saying "4-chord auto-tuned bull shit", I am not saying that progressions with just 4 chords are necessarily bad...I am simply referring to the typical formula that is always heard from artists such as Justin Beiber. Dave composes music that is much more interesting than any pop music I have ever heard.

  • @genericaccount1967 But to answer your question, this song has about 10 underlying chords when you factor in the bridge/outro.

  • @genericaccount1967 The basic chords are: Dm, F, C, A#, A, Am, Dm7. Fragments of those chords are throughout the song

  • @lindberg711 you could not in any way at all of said this better

  • @lindberg711 glad i am not the only one. I wish I could create like this!

  • @lindberg711 THANK YOU for this insight---the Justin Beiber fans of the world will NEVER understand what type of TALENT it takes to create and perform something like this. RESPECT DAVE!!!!!!!

  • Some people are touched by God....everyone else just listens....

  • @dirttuner1999 some people God are touched by god, and some God kicks in the ass, God kicked Dave Matthews in the ass.

  • I am not the biggest fan of DMB by a mile, but I saw this when it aired years ago, and it broke my heart. Thanks for the posting.

  • This is my favorite version of The Stone. What a great song.

  • thank you for having this up, another version was removed!

  • wow I saw another video of this but yours is much better... the audio and video are in sync and the quality is better.

  • This is the better of the 2. This is his best song out there.
