  • I shoot federal mostly for my glocks. No issues with it. Have shot Winchester and Remington a lot. Federal at walmart is cheap and thus far good. Just my .02.

  • What I really like about your videos (other than the great shooting) is you are real and honest, a lot of shooters grasp on to one type of gun and to them all other guns are trash, but not you, thanks for all the great shooting videos, most of us really appreciate them very much.

  • Oh Hi!

  • Quality vid, I agree barrat 50cal?

  • Great vid and great advise. Way to go Hickok!

  • Barrat 50 Cal?????

  • You know why your the best? Because you have shot more rounds then 99% of youtube "Gun reviewers" ever will combined, yet your humble enough to claim your not a expert.

    Hats off to you sir.

  • Anyone know what brand his ears are?

  • @bubba102893 They are Howard Leight brand

  • He sounds like the principal from south park mmmmmkayyyy??

  • NO to TULAMMO for Handguns! Esp SR9 or XD9. Kick some brass!

  • @cause420 No to Tula period!

  • @sanjuancb. Agreed. Not worth saving a dollar and some change. I'll stick with Federal Brass FMJ for cheap reliable ammo.

  • i both practice and load out for defense with 185gr .45 acp in my g30 sf.

so i wonder if old hickok could set the record straight for me on something.

i heard that the shorter slide and heavier recoil spring of my gun the g30 could have issues with either the light or heavy for caliber grain bullets is this true? also which weight is better for defense or simply which do you recommend?

i actually forget which :/ ie, light or heavy could be an issue.

either way thanks in advance all :)

  • @ladyfeind A small gun tends to be easier to jam because all the mechanism is now working with less space and tolerance. So, generally speaking a small gun like a Glock 30 will generally be less reliable with a wide variety of bullets compared to a Glock 21. The only way to know is to test, really.

  • for home defense i just put ammo in the gun, kill they are within 10 yards you could mix bird shot with fmj for christ sake

  • Is hand loaded ammo as good as manufactures for carry? never heard anyone bring this up and I don't know why there would be a difference?

  • @dukenukem10 Hey dukenukem10, hand loaded ammo is normally better than factory ammo, the reason is it's normally much much more consistent if it's loaded and measured properly while factory ammo might be a few grains short or over whatever is listed on the box.

  • @dukenukem10 Depends who hand loaded it, but generally its better.

  • @alfonsothewhite

Please god tell me your being Sarcastic? That's complete and utter BS! You must have intended to say that Steel Cored Bullets have more penetration power?

#1Steel Bullet Cases don't have the same expansion properties as Brass so they can jam in Tight tolerance bolt rifles.#2 Steel ammo Cases can and do Rust(cosmetic). Steel Cases (even when Laquer Coated) are Hard on Claw type Extractors and can prematurely wear said Extractors.

    Peace

  • I know you are a Glock guy so you would be a great person to ask. Are there any lead fouling issues that you know of using lead bullets (reloads) in a Glock 17? Most used would be either 115 or 147 grain.

  • Oh Hi!....

  • What do you think of the 30-40 Krag rifle round?

  • The steel cases expand more when fired so sometimes it won't come out of the chamber after being fired. Some bullets are just shitty

  • life is good?

  • well in regard to your ammo rec video..i have to say steel case is ammo is all i use..can i ask why u dont use steel case??..i run glock with tula steel case ammo never ever gives problems ..i run steel case in all my ar15 and hk33 and of course my ak also..never seen in my years of shooting steel case had any problems of anykind!!...just my two cents..

  • all the modern stuff there. But yeah they probably put in on the front and not in some german barracks for exercise purpose. But you are the expert so I better keep my mouth shut :-) .... How is the G36 in comparison to American carbines like M16A4?

  • @903lew: A friend of mine works at a logistics batallion in Beelitz and he told me that they generally don't have the al

  • I trust my life to nothing but Speer Gold Dots everyday there probably the best self defense ammo on the market today

  • @wcgold2 I guess I should have said the more magazines at the range the less time in between shooting and reloading. As for ccw holders. I know some people who carry an extra 2 magazines on their belt or wherever they can. I personally, only carry 1 magazine that has a plus 2 extender on my 26 and that's 12+1. I figure if it lasts more than 13 rounds the cops need to be called a and I need to run! Hope I helped w/ your question I know hicok is a busy guy. Maybe he will chime in later. God bless

  • @wcgold2 "How many magazines should you have for each a gun?" That is a very broad question that can't simply be answered but 1 number. If you do a lot of shooting the more magazines the less reloading time you spend at the range. For home defense weapons, most confrontations won't last more than a few rounds. Ideally. But I personally have 2 extra mags for my Glock 19 LOADED. 3 total. Hornady cd. I have 6 total call when I go to the range. They also fit my glock 26 ccw pistol. Just my 2 cents.

  • @hickok45, I think THE most important thing in carry ammo is not velocity or expansion or bullet weight; it is quite simply "does it work reliably in my gun?" There are guns out there, especially the pocket guns like the P38T, that are very ammo sensitive. The best bullet in the world isn't worth a hill of beans if it's stuck in the magazine.

  • nice pistol-gun you got there.

  • How many magazines should you have for each of your firearms?

  • In short words for those that still dont get it. No big major deal on what ammunition your use. Clearly, stay in your caliber and shoot safely

  • @903lew: It's a little too late for that. At that time i was not interested in joining the army for several reasons. By the way, I don't know what you've heard but I think the Bundeswehr is not that well-equipped. They have the basics of course but there's no comparison to previous german armament. Luckily, I guess.

  • @kloakenkalle

    Funny how that happens.

The ones I trained with a couple of years ago (ca 2008) carried G36s, in my opinion one of the nicest little carbines today. Other than that they had all the bits and bobs that make up a mech battalion. Don't know what more you'd want really, 5,56 HK - 120mm Rheinmetall does it for most :D

  • @shinigamiusmc: You're right of course. The gatling is the real grandfather. I was a little overhasty..But stil it is some kind of grandfather of modern cheap and efficient weapon production as well as technical precursorship that's what I was basically trying to convey.

  • would it be posaible to do a review on the grandfathers of all assault rifles and modern MG's the StG44 and the MG42? These weapons would probably be worth showing :-) Especially for a german like me, who is not able to shoot this kinda hardware because of law restriction, reviews performed by an experienced shooter like you would be extremely marvelous to see !

  • @kloakenkalle, grand daddy of all MG's would be the Gatling Gun, followed by the Maxim for Modern MG's

  • @kloakenkalle Join the Bundeswehr, they've all the guns you could ever want.

  • Dear Hickok45,

  • Oh ! Hi ! hickok45 ha ha ha ha i love this entrance

  • when are you going to review a FN FAL or L1A1?

  • The Box O Truth has looked at hollow points and clothes, and it seems like HP ammo has a hell of a time expanding if someone's wearing much.

I need to get a box of Critical Defense, it seems like it expands pretty reliably. I haven't seen any boxes in my local gun store. Might have to go online.

  • You know of a good 45 long colt ammo, well rather good priced I mean ha ha. Seems like I am throwing a dollar everytime I pull the trigger there has to be a cheaper possibly bulk ammo out there that is good for target practice.

  • I've had Winchester, Remington, Magtech, and at least three other "large" brands' ammo have dud rounds. I had a box of fifty of RWS .38 Special with four dud rounds. Never had a single problem with Hornady, Cor-bon or Federal.

  • lol thats all i got to say about that

  • That looks like a Ruger SR22.....................Which i would assume is borrowed from TN?

  • @gshdrums, I'm IN Tennessee. It's a T&E gun from Ruger. Just got it earlier this week and have been enjoying it.

  • @hickok45 Ah ok! I was thinking borrowed from TN=tnoutdoors9 :). You have stop stop giving away what your gonna do videos on ;)

  • @hickok45 Your in TN? I am in TN too....could i rent one of your guns to fire?

  • @amorican88 dont know if thats a sr22 but he told me a couple days ago one was " in the mail " from ruger so yep he will be doin a video soon

  • Hickok, is that a Ruger SR22 pistol you are shooting in this FAQ video? If so, I will be anxiously awaiting your review. I plan on picking one up this week at the gun show.

  • @hickok45 after i started watching your vids... I wish you were my grandpa :)

  • will lead bullets hurt my glock or marlin 22 barrels? great video and comments. held hostage in california

  • @lyleinmb It won't hurt the Marlin but definitively don't shoot lead out of the Glock!

  • the baby m1911

  • hickok, what a gentleman. I asked you a question once about barrel length in a 686 and you were kind enough to give a straight answer to a novice in need of an expert opinion. I now see what you mean by proficiency with the firearm itself instead of having a magic round in your gun. If you cant hit what your shooting at nothing else matters. Others will give advice but it doesnt mean much from most of them frankly, as most of these people I consider to be overgrown children with a rambo complex.

  • What a farce there is no such thing as a proven ammo? What the hell would proven be any way?

How many dead bodies do we have with bullet holes proving how great one brand is over another? There are tests after tests in Gelatin, denim even some animals. This debate can go on till domes day? A bullet hole is a bullet hole, no magic bullets exist. Its kind of hard to prove a point on human beings. Dead bodies show JHP can be less effective than FMJ for penetration. Get over it bullets are bullets.

  • There are 3 specific make/models of combat ammunition that have been definitively proven and have the track record to back them up as "the best", this is not to say other types aren't that good, but that they haven't been truly proven yet in the way that these have (Hornady CD is an example, it just hasn't been fully proven yet), those 3 are: Speer Gold Dots, Federal Tactical/HST (preferably Tactical Bonded), and Winchester Ranger/PDX1 (same thing).

  • @rupert93r There is one bullet that is better than any other for defense. It is the one that went through the center of the bad guy's vital area.

  • Before I knew that I had to match specific ammunition to a specific gun, I had a Beretta Bobcat. It didn't function properly with the cheap .22 ammo I was using, so I sold it. I now have another Bobcat that works fine since I matched the proper ammo (CCI Stingers in this case) with the gun.

  • Reloads are the best practice ammo, when you make em, you appreciate them more and can practice more :)

  • Good info Bro!!!

  • I love ur vids

  • Best Defense JHP Ammo: Speer Gold Dot, Federal Premium HST, and Winchester Ranger T.

  • Is steel case bad for your gun?

  • :( All that good brass lost in the leaves... makes me sad.

  • >get a mosin nagant

    >get hungarian yellow tip

    >penetrate the frontal armor of an abrams.

Hungarian Yellow Tip 7.62x54r is rumored to be made out of the God-Emperor's armor after he defeated Horus.

  • @BobinatorLulz No... No It won't... It won't even dent a 1/2in hardened plate

  • @PiGood

Its an on-running gag from 4chan.org on the weapons board /k/

We have a hard on for mosin nagants and the 7.62x54r round...and we put Hungarian Yellow Tip on the throne because its so badass and well made.

  • i guess doccarson has not watched alot of your videos

  • For pistol training FMJ is just fine, for selfdefense i strongly recomend BARNES TAC XP bullets, the are wonderful and for final shots on game (including wildboar) i use IMPALA frustum bullets! They are brass solids and penetrat the cranium of the strongest wild boar without any problem!!!!

  • Everything in 10mm Auto!

  • I always buy silver bear, brown bear, and Barnaul. They last a long time, and tehy're absolutely reliable.

  • There is a guy in Germany, his name is Lutz Moeller! In my opinion he makes the best hunting bullets in this world. They are made from cooper or brass and perform incredible good.

  • Have you actually used your carry weapon to defend yourself?

  • well said hickok, I do think its rather irrelevant with hand guns though since the margin of error in accuracy is so much more dependent on the shooter with hand guns compared to say assault/hunting rifles, not necessarily the ammo itself. I really think any sort of handgun ammo is fine, just like you said shoot what works best for you basically.

  • I love Tul'Ammo. I have yet to have any issues with it in 9mm, .223 and 7.62x39. I don't reload so I don't need brass, steel is fine.

I actually find that Tul is much better than other lower brands like Winchester white box. I have had less failures to feed and it runs considerably cleaner.

  • Thanks for sharing, Hickok.

    I love these "firing-side" chats! ;O)

  • Hey Hickok, I am an avid xd head but I would love to see a video with the glock 34 and xdm 5.25 competition because I am interested in buying both and am have a hard time making up my mind witch one to get. Besides, I think I would make for a fun video.

  • Thanks it's always a pleasure to watch your videos, and there's always something to learn.

  • Have you considered linking up with a user called Tnoutdoors9? He does calibrated ammo testing, the two of you could really get some good information out there.

  • @Doccarson check out his older videos, he has already done that.

  • @Sniper19641 FANtastic. Thanks for the heads up. In all reality I know what I like, just like seeing the videos.

  • @Doccarson, You think? I've never heard of that guy; is he located in Russia?

  • @hickok45 hahaha

  • @hickok45 I had that one coming.

  • @hickok45 haha , Hickok I'm a Russian super secret agent and TNoutdoors9 is most definitely located in Russia lol, keep up the no nonsense videos, and good quality information as usual lol

  • @Doccarson They actually are friends and both live in TN.

  • @pcgamerjoe Oh god I had that one coming. This is what I get for not doing my homework. Thank you guys for being nice about it. Other parts of youtube would have torn me apart for a mistake like that.

  • @Doccarson Haha no need to feel bad. Not everyone follows hickok like a bunch of groupies (guilty as charged here). ;)

  • @Doccarson Check out "The Exchange" on tnoutdoors9 channel. :)

  • @Doccarson Protip: Hickok45 and Tnoutdoors9 are neighbors (I believe).

  • @Doccarson the funniest part is he even mentions tnoutdoors in a comment on this very video 2 hours before your post. It's ok though, small world and all.

  • @Sevnfurdy You know this is the last time I wake up and watch a video and then say "hey I'm gonna be helpful" or "I'll make a suggestion". Its just not worth it.

  • @Doccarson Nah man. I'm just bustin your balls. It's always good to make some honest suggestions. TMI doesn't apply in these situations. Happy Hunting!

  • hey hickok45 do you ever get bears or wild pigs in the compound?

  • I load all my own centerfire. I buy top line components for carry, hunting or accuracy ammo and run of the mill for practice or plinking. I have to be careful with primers in partinular, but if you use at least 'good' components, you can't go wrong. Start with mid power loads and work from there.

  • I generally buy ammo from different manufacturers when I get a new gun and see which one shoots without failure and gives the best group. You should do this with any gun.

  • @Damageinc2485 Brass is a much softer material than steel. There would be more wear on the extractor and chamber when using steel cased ammo. But I think for most people the use of steel cased ammo would be fine because most of us will not shoot enough to matter. Someone like Hickock goes through more ammo in a month than I do in a year easily.

  • Cosa ne pensi delle Fiocchi Black Mamba?

  • If I had a dime for every tacticool guy on the range with the most hardcore demon slaying ammo who can't hit a dinner plate at seven yards...

  • @aluisious, Yep, too many people "major in minors," when they should be spending quality time with their little firearm friend sending SOME kind of bullet downrange. :-) Terminal performance IS better with some bullets, of course, as Tnoutdoors9 and others demonstrate in their testing. Skill at arms, awareness, and common sense take front stage, however.

  • @aluisious On the flip side, a lot of folks buy 1 special box of home defense ammo that sits in a table, and then shoot garbage at the range. That defense ammo may not run consistently through their gun and they'll never know until it matters because it's too 'expensive' to plink with. I'm not disagreeing with you, just realize a lot of folks error on the other side of this problem. I run 2 boxes of my chosen carry ammo to ensure my gun likes it, then return to the plinker ammo.

  • @neosonic66, Right. I like to every now and then just pull and shoot my Glock with the ammo I've been carrying and then replace it with fresh ammo. It serves as further function testing and reminds me that the recoil and point of impact is the same as my 180 plinking ammo.

  • @hickok45 Just like Wild Bill, every now and then (or every day for him, supposedly) empty your gun, clean it and reload for the next day of carry. Of course cleaning and reloading a Glock is considerably easier than cleaning and reloading an 1851 Navy....

  • @aluisious so true! All that type is doing is turning money into noise!

  • @aluisious haha good point. But isnt' that one of the great things about America?? You can still own some sweet guns with "demon slaying ammo" EVEN though you can't hit a dinner plate at seven yards. :D More power to them....though...they may want to work on their skill. And that's why I never go to a public firing range.

  • "Just get some ammo and shoot"

  • hmmm i spy the new ruger sr22 pistol in the hand.

looking forward to the video upcoming!

  • @spartanglory71 he already did one

  • I shoot steel case in all my autos, keeps price down, I reload for my revolvers, they eat up anything anything

  • oh hai :3

  • @Lokpyrite That's not why there aren't steel bullets. If you don't use a soft metal (lead, copper, brass) it will wear your barrel horribly.

  • @Harmon1ca as far as I can tell from some ammo test videos here on you tube, grain refers to the weight of the bullet. seen a video were they weighed the bullet after firing it to see how much weight it retained. but I could be wrong....

  • @WImob420 grain is a measurement of weight, true. It can refer to the powder in the load or bullet ... sometimes if someone is stopped up they refer to gain, whole grain, butt ... that's a different subject completely except it can make stuff shoot out your ... ok, time for me to end that ramble

  • It is so hard to find 9mm hardball for target practice in 147gr. Have to get reloader ASAP I guess. Seems that all the big store stuff is 115gr. easier to find the right hardball in.40, but man it seems to have gone up recently. Grr...

  • @harpoclarx I found 9mm 147 gr "WinClean" at Cheaperthandirt for $16.48/50. (Plus shipping, of course.) It functioned well in my Glock 19, and it is allowed at the local indoor range. (Both hickock45 and tnoutdoors9 prefer the heavier bullet, so it must be the right thing for Tennessee.)

  • 308 views. You need to do a video with the Ruger Scout rifle Hickok!

  • @MypasswordisNewMedic He already has.

  • @MypasswordisNewMedic he already has

  • @MypasswordisNewMedic You're a little behind...

  • @eib40jls Honestly I probably am. He just has so many videos. I'll look it up guys, thank's.

  • You should have mentioned Tnoutdoors9 and his ammo testing. Really good stuff

  • @RebeccaLynne82 he did in the video description. thats why he had the little flag come up at the end of the video that said "read description".

  • Mr Hickok45 i need your opinions about ZVI KEVIN short 9mm. Thanks.

  • I'd say buy the best ammo you can get, at the lowest price.

  • oh hai. lol

  • Why no steel ammo?

  • Comment removed

  • @wastool You can't reload steel case ammo.

  • @wastool Steel ammo would go through kevlar vests, therefore it's illegal in most places.

  • @Lokpyrite he's talking about steel cases, not steel bullets. ;p

  • @Lokpyrite that literally has nothing to do with it lol

  • @Lokpyrite nope lol!!

  • @Lokpyrite I wear body armor 5 days a week. Almost no pistol bullets will penetrate body armor. Regardless of if it's steel jacketed or not. Most Russian ammunition is both steel cased and the bullet is steel jacketed with copper plating, they call it bi-metal. This will not put police officers at more risk however many people feel that the steel on steel could cause excessive wear on the gun. I was inquiring if this was the reason Mr. Hickok chooses not to use Russian ammunition.

  • Im in love with you Hickok!

  • Hickock

Why don't you use steel cased ammo? Is it just so you can reload the cases?

Wolf surplus is so cheap, it's hard to resist just for plinking ammo.

  • @TheKirbot Steel is harder then brass or aluminum and thus increases wear.

  • @drmaudio That's not strictly true. Cartridge brass can actually be harder than some steels, like low-carbon steel used for ammo casings... And you'd better not let the aluminum cases oxidize, because aluminum oxide makes for great sandpaper.

  • Do you ever use surplus corrosive ammo?

  • @armenianesh818 147*

  • @miacanes5 Hst, hydra shok, or hi shok? Box of 20, 50, how many? 115, 124, 146 gr?

  • Shoot'em if ya got'em!

  • I totally agree! I've been shooting almost 50 years, and cheap or high dollar ammo doesn't really matter. Placement matters.

  • Well, ive always been told FMJ for carry, to avoid over penetration to anything or anyone behind the threat.

  • @MelsEpicWheelTime You mean hollow points to prevent over penetration? FMJs are designed for penetration.

  • @joe2020jack Yeah, i got JHP, FMJ, HP mixed up haha

  • @MelsEpicWheelTime Either you meant to say hollow point or your complete understanding of a full metal jacketed bullet is the exactly opposite of what is true. I'm going to go with you had a brain fart and meant HP (hollow point) to prevent over penetration!

  • @steelcurtain41286 Yeah i got JHP, HP, and everything mixed up. Brain Fart.

  • I agree, making sure that whatever ammo you carry properly cycles through your gun, training with you carry ammo, and making sure you can hit the target is way more important than the extra .06 in that the bullet expands.

  • gold dot hollow points are the best defense

  • Wal Mart is the place to go to buy ammo. Boxes of Federal for $11 (9mm) down here

  • @miacanes5 I buy from the same people that sometimes supply Hickok with ammo from ammoforsale and have used the hickok45 10% discount. In 2-3 days I have my ammo and no fighting the crowds at Walmart. Cheap ammo as well. :)

  • @spallatial how do you use that? Guess I haven't got through all the vids yet.

  • @tblbaby Looks like we have until Jan 31st to get the discount: Check out Hickok45's Springfield XDm 45 compact video to get the code or: "Remember that until January 31st at AmmoForSale you can get $15.00 off one $150.00 order if you enter Hickok-45 as the coupon promo code".

  • @spallatial Thanks!

  • @spallatial Hows the shipping charges? .... Just type in hickok45 as a coupon right?

  • @miacanes5 I used Hickok-45 as the code

  • The cheapest!

  • tnoutdoors9 does not approve this video. ;)

  • You have to hit your target first before worrying about ammo. In my case, duds work pretty well. At least I don't sail those over the berm.

  • excellent advice! like that spot you're in! gun was was incredibly loud there. ever shoot your double bbl shorty in there? ;-)

  • hickock should do a gun in .22-250

  • i like how he does "Oh hi" in his videos sometimes.

  • life is good

  • That looks like his Ruger SR9 Compact. I think he's right, the best range ammo is the the one that's on sale. :-)

  • fantastico
