I'm 14, my English teacher told me to go check these guys out after I asked about bands like The Decemberists, which he coincidentally also introduced me too.
I would sell the souls of my unborn children just to have Jeff sing this on front of me. It's unfair that I started liking NMH like, ten years after they stopped playing.
I would do terrible, disgusting things to see jeff mangum on his tour this fall... If you have a ticket to one of his sold out shows, I may bludgeon you to death for it. just an early warning.
I love Neutral Milk Hotel, but if anyone in my bloody school listened to it they'd say it was rubbish. I'm in year eight, and I'm surrounded by people with AWFUL taste. King of Carrot Flowers is awesome; In The Aeroplane over the Sea is the best album I've ever listened to.
@martyrdomcausespanic yeah, but ive now realized that age doesn't matter, as long as you respect music like this, and are creative, it doesn't matter. my band (we are in 5th grade) are playing a show tonight with bands from the local highschool, but that just means that we started a little earlier, im not better than anyone else that likes e6 music.
I was three and I'm russian. Cool yeah ? Russian that loves NMH a lot. Really weird band, on the one hand they're very underground, but at the same time are very popular.
Fuck... I hate being young. I wish I could have been around to see these guys, among other greats live. Now all we have is shitty gaga and meaningless alt rock.
neutral milk hotel is indie, and they were indie at the time. if you look deep you may find something you like. Search david dondero, neva dinova, bright eyes, okkervil river, m. ward, monsters of folk, right away great captain, uglu casonova. Theyre not exactly NMH but they're still damn good and still around. There are also plenty others. Indie-folk/alt-folk didn't die when Mangum stopped writing music, there's still plenty of it to be found... just search.
@johnmorisi8 I agree. This isn't so removed from "our time," this was hardly a decade ago. It's actually a very exciting musical time if you know where or how to look for good music. Give locals a chance, check every band who sends you a friend invite here, look for artists on last.fm. It's out there and it's GREAT stuff. People who lament the old times are not looking hard enough.
@johnmorisi8 I'm glad you mention upstate New York...I'm not from there but I go to school near Albany and there is a surprisingly decent indie scene there. I've been to NP once or twice but that doesn't surprise me, it seems like a good creative place. This is exactly what I mean by going local; usually the best stuff is the stuff yo never see making the big time. Daytrotter is a great resource too. There's no excuse for thinking we have a lack of good music these days, it's just lazy.
Stop complaining and built a time machine! Dead serious. I really wanna see these shows live, like back in the 90's. (And I know that you all have the same wish.)
It's cool that so many young kids are getting into Neutral Milk hotel. Coming from someone who is 17, in my area most people my age never heard of them

:O I didn't know NHM were around Athens, Georgie. What is it with the place and generating amazing musicians?
Also, disappointed that I was 5, but happy that the internet allowed me to discover this stuff.
