@jaistar96 Even Steiner's Shock does only ridiculously low damage. I wanted to highlight that basically any attack that does not ignore defense/magic defense, regardless of its strength (and Eternal Darkness is arguably the one of the strongest magical attacks), is of no avail to harm the Friendly Yan. Frog Drop also looks much fancier than Eternal Darkness ;]

...This is nuckin' futz. But i'd much rather do this than give it a Diamond and make Ozma easier. I like Ozma when he's actually a challenge. I like to beat Ozma normally, then Friendly Yan (to get Yan's comment about already beating Ozma) then Hades (to get his remark about me beating Ozma already as well). Just so the game is WELL AWARE I beat that stupid rubber ball at max power with no weaknesses. XD It's honestly not much harder...just get Long Reach and it's practically the same fight.

@NEroNeRoNerON Something along the lines of: "Reach the round guy...huh?! You already BEAT him?!" It's hilarious. Kind of renders the entire Friendly Monster quest pointless unless you're in it for the AP and Rosetta Ring but still...nothing beats getting those extra lines of dialogue from the two after beating Ozma without any help at all. You'll still get it from Hades regardless (even if you did the quest), but you have to beat Ozma without quest to get Friendly Yan's dialogue.

They're the ones who made the game...plus, difficulty (much like quality and enjoyability) is a subjective opinion. You could like something I hate and vice-versa. Much like something you find easy I could find difficult, and vice-versa. Granted, you are right. FF9 isn't really a challenge (if you ask me). Ozma was pretty much the only real challenge, and it was entirely optional.

Possible no auto-regen, no fixed damage attacks, no trance strategy for this fight:

Auto-haste, Silence, HP+, MP+ abilities, party consists of Eiko, Garnet, Quina, and Zidane.

Every turn Garnet and Eiko get, they cast curaga-all.

Quina spams Twister and Zidane covers the rest of the healing and is generally just there as most of his attacks that could hit are fixed damage.

So the friendly Yan is the last Friendly monster to find before something good happens? I now feel like a bad gamer for FFIX, So let me put something like this for how I never knew this from the start:

Whenever I find a friendly monster, I can only get to after giving an ore to someone friendly...after that, I find someone different and asks for an item I don't have and thus cause me to put that side-quest to a permanent halt. T_T

@11225a Actually, after giving a certain item to a friendly monster, one is given exactly that item that the next friendly monster will ask for. So, unless you use these items up, you should be fine. ;) Maybe you should try it in your next playthrough (and I certainly hope you will play FF IX at least once more). ;]
