Your idea is great, but I see a flaw in the idea, of using this to teach children. You learn your child to count by 3, and ones it reach 30, it will actually be in the same spot that it started in, this doesn't make any sense in the decimal system. But for basic counting combined with pratical use, it's super. Also makes some nice trinkets to hang.
I was actually looking to create a mathmatical proof in wood, to illustrate the point to the students by having it exsist in real life. Interresting
Why on earth do you stop counting 3s at 21? Go up to 30 to get a nice closed curve (the "design" should be a 10 point star, because 3 and 10 are mutually prime)
I've been sharing this idea since I first learned it 15 years ago at the Eugene Waldorf School in Eugene, Or...since then I've used it while teaching in public school. It's a great idea, though I've never used it with the nails. Ahh, a hammer and nails in public school....

If you went by 2's then you would have 5 sides. 2 x 5 = 10

This is so simple, yet so ingenious. Thank you! Can't wait to share this with my little ones.
