The funny thing about Scotland is that, for such a small country there is a great variation in accent. It varies in location and in class. A middle class Glasgow accent is very different from a working class Glasgow accent, which mostly uses colloquialisms and slang words which can be difficult to understand. But a well spoken Scottish accent is one of the best in the world which is why there are so many Scottish actors in demand and why it is used in advertising a lot in Britain.

I was doing a semester abroad in Aberdeen last year, and a janitor came to our apartment and said something to me in an incredibly thick accent and I couldn't understand a word of it! But I did catch "car" towards the end, and since none of us in my apartment drove, I just said "no, not us" and he left :P Haha!

Well, the funny thing was, because it's university city, most people weren't Scottish so I wasn't THAT exposed to the accent! I got really good at understanding Polish and German ones though! I was living with a girl from Bo'ness, and she's wasn't too hard to understand. I'm from Hong Kong but I grew up in Australia (my accent's even weirder than most!) so unless it's really, really thick, accents don't bother me too much. I'd love to visit Glasgow, I never got around to it :P
