@juice0105 The design of the bodyshell was a clear 20 years old by the time that EuroNCAP test happened - no other car on test was using a shell of that age, and it really should have been retired before then. What the Metro/100 did have was amazingly responsive steering and handling, so while it lagged severely in terms of passive safety, in terms of active safety it could more than hold its own.
I drove a few Rover Metros, and i was really impressed by the way they drove, very good steering feel and superb handling, sure some other small cars were more roomy and perhaps the Peugeot 205 was a better allrounder, but the Rover Metro was actually quite reliable, very enjoyable to drive and excellent economy....Also the 1.4 16v models were very quick..thanks for posting austin 1100
top gear used to be about 'peoples' cars and family cars, cost and economy, nowadays its mereley a show to show off what you can buy on the off chance that you may inherit a stupidly large amount of money, or be a rich prick in the first place. how many people can afford these top of the range buggatti's and jaguars? These type of cars are the erm.. MINORITY on the road in contrast to most SENSIBLE brands and choices.
jesus, did they pay him to say that stuff about the interior? its the same bloody interior as in the metro with new plastic. the only "rover philosophy" it upholds is the philosophy of rebadging old cars and calling them new ones
What an interesting point... at least they weren't egotistical plant pots back in the day.... oh... and who said it was better like this? At least they reviewed realistically priced cars.
I know what you mean, you really do get sick of the usual Ferraris and stuff, if you're not on over £200k a year then you cant afford any of the cars they test!!
@austin1100 Thank god this format is in the history books now, I think the folk who moan about top gears new format can't be bothered to move on and watch 5th gear.

I loved the way metros drove, much more positive and engaging than the horrible stodgy Nova/Corsa, or the rough, rusty and unreliable fiesta...

The Metro was a wonderful car for what it was!Fiesta's,Nova's & 205's etc may have been better in certain ways, but to drive, they were so behind.
The metro was FUN and quirky to drive.Different to all the other 'superminis' of the time!
Don't be unfair & compare it with modern standards(crash test etc),it was truly great and 1 million+sales show.
A true family icon with its earlier siblings the 'Morris Minor' and 'Mini'!
Long hail the 'MIGHTY METRO'. Had 5 in my time, loved & cherished them all!!

@paulhunter123 old top gear provided more consumer advice. if you want that, watch fifth gear. if you hate fifth gear, that's your problem
