/ disagree - see the attraction with wow is the "daily grid" the "questing" players build a bond with that character and i fail to see how they couldn't, the sense of accomplishment that comes with each level or that item you've been grinding is way to addictive to just forget about and more importantly your idea for a game where you can just create a character specifically for a dungeon sucks! imagine a high end dungeon full of in experienced players, if you want plug and play get an xbox!!
I think blizzard did well at the whole leveling aspect of MMOs. You can quest to gain XP, you can PVP to get xp, and you can do dungeons to get XP. And I know when I was leveling I would get bored of questing and would switch to dungeons which were fun because you just hit things and get loot while gaining Xp toward the next level.
It's funny because everytime a company like war hammer tries new ideas to beat WoW... Blizzard just takes that new idea from their game changes it a little and puts it in a patch... The only way to beat WoW is to make a new WoW to an extent..
I dont think wow is going to last much longer after cataclysm, because blizzard cant keep infinitely expanding the game. Imagine how long it would take to level from 1-100, then raid for good endgame gear and so on. It would get boring, no matter how pretty the graphics or all the cool new features.
From a guy that has done the 1-30 grind severla tmes...the entire game experience is not fun for me until around 37-40...when you have most of your good spells, A 100%, and can do a variety of fun Instances (ZF was the first instance i ever saw...and i was hooked...thank you tristan.)
the only thing i could see as being better(Since im finally 80) is the raid browser. No one uses it! It would be a nice touch.
But overall...this is the best mmo right now.(I miss old everquest LOL)
Atleast im hoping for that, because im thinking of when im gonna be like ... Old, and I can't really think of things to do at that point so perhaps im gonna just do that as a hobby instead of other things (No idea what other things old people can be up to really) (Seriously what do they do all day?!)
If WoW are gonna keep doing what they are doing, which is expanding the game and coming up with new fun and interesting features that players can play with and enjoy there are basicly gonna be this game that has all theese things. And with all this experience that the devolpers have which others don't im thinking that there is a chance of Warcraft existing for quite a long time.
If you want to beat wow, make a game with a different look, but one that has a UI that handles just as fluidly as wow. City of Heroes is a good example, I absolutely love that game, but the UI is so buggy and hard to use that it completely turned me off to the whole game. How you control your character plays a big part in the gaming experience.
Completely agree it is possibility to top WoW; however, it will be very hard to stay on top. Most of the games that had any unique ideas WoW looks at it and tries to include it to keep their player base. So to beat World of Warcraft one is going to have to find enough nitches that make it better to pull away enough of the WoW crowd before WoW includes something similar. All in all though loved this. Excellent ideas and insight. Thank you.
Warcraft is a juggernaut it spent 10 years of RTS powering on to transform into the World of Warcraft which took players deeper into the lore. Its one of the original reasons I took up WoW for the story lines - then the gameplay gets you in some way. Oh I like going and killing these epic bosses or oh I like going and killing that noob.
Whatever Blizzard throw out into the MMO market next wll probably be another bomb with the same impact WoW had.
What you semi touched on with guild wars was wow private servers.
thousands of ppl love taking lvling out of wow and getting the best gear just to kill the bosses they couldn't kill in the real game. maybe if blizzard made there own version of that and sold it for like 10 extra dollars..? idk just a thought.
WoW will not be killed by another company, they are going to kill it themselves. Not because they pander to one group more than the other, but eventually they will run out of lore. Blizzard has already thought of this and are working on a new mmo and with a pretty good fan base and track record, I believe that will be the next big thing. Remember they've been working on this for a couple years and are not done with it yet so I believe they improve on their own game.
@brent85bmw not only that, but blizzard is waaaaaay too powerful financially to be beat. on top of that, they also have 2 other core games to make mmo's out of just like they did warcraft. They have Diablo which had a waaay bigger fan base than warcraft, and starcraft. Blizzard has always been a top developer and I think they will be for years and years to come.
WOW has nailed most of the things I want to see in an MMO. The only thing they haven't done was figure out a way to make your actions impact the world. There's a couple of crumbs like Wrathgate, but for the most part nothing you do really makes a difference. With The Old Republic BioWare is trying to fill that void Blizzard hasn't been able to achieve. They hope to have strong storytelling where your actions and decisions actually impact the world on a permanent level.
The big problem with beating WoW isn't the game itself, it's the social connections built through it. 10+ million people with countless connections to each other in and out of game. A significant number will have to be willing to risk losing touch with friends and risk not liking the social environment they land in. It might be a better game, but is it a better social experience?
Star Wars: The Old Republic seems to be doing exactly what hes explaining, trying to boost the epic feeling and making at least an aspect of it outright awesome, questing in the case of SWTOR, I can see them trying to make the PvP sweet too hopefully
The original GuildWars is awesome. I was hoping GuildWars2 was going to be the next big mmo but the more info they put out on it, the more it looks like its gonna suck.
Released: ffxi may 2002, Wow classic nov 2004 -- i hate you didn't include FF's point in the mmorpg development. Seems all are just a copy of a copy. FF14 coming out, i sure it will be jsut be a version of FF11 + WoW, but we'll have to see. Thanks for your videos, enjoy them greatly. Anyways don't want write to much on the topic of FF vs Wow-- tends to just draw up a bunch of trash talk, sadly.
What they did, and need to do more, is reward the player more. They favored the player more in WoW than other games, but in Wrath lately they're been failing at caring for the people. Characters that I work my ass off for months and years are getting ripped apart in 2 seconds in BG's, or topping healing but no guilds invites which won't allow me to end-game raid. They're also shitty GM's that suck at Customer Service.
ugh if WoW didnt have a leveling system there would be WAY TO MANY nubs, It haunts my dreams!! I think the biggest improvement to wow would be if Blizz stopped being greedy little fuckers and actually Bought "good" servers, or something that wouldnt require a server restart EVERY WEEK and eliminating server lag.
There are blatant skill barriers such as limited tries on newer dungeons. The ease of obtaining entry level raiding gear makes the skill gap even more apparent. Blizzard is giving everyone the chance to raid. Excuses why people aren't raiding are disappearing. All that is left is improving your personal skill and finding others at your level of skill to complete content with. No more complaining hardcores. No more complaining super-casuals. You can all live on the same servers in harmony
All the fanboy QQ still makes me laugh. About the same number of hardcore raiders are still doing heroics, and maybe the same number plus a little more are doing normals. Raiding is accessible to people who can only play 8 hours a week through extended lockouts.
WoW leveling sucks, should be shortened, or given better story line, its way too unmeaningfull (killing 20 monkeys? come on, when was that fun). If you look at Age of Conan. They had one aspect of the game that I enjoyed. They had a meaningful single-player story-line for Quest-leveling. If Quest leveling have to be in MMO's thats the way to go. Take the MMO leveling out and put in Single player leveling, if it has to be there. Low level party dungeons should also be there as an alternative.
the way that they "hook" people is how frequent or infrequent people are rewarded in their game. take a weekly raid for example, you win some awesome helm, but you lost a roll in some shoulders, so you WAIT till the next week to try for those shoulders again, which dont have 100% drop rate. and every time that you wait in WoW, blizzard is profiting. its basically like paying $15 for 4 raid resets. However WoW is insanely fun, and is basically the standard MMOs have to beat for years to come
i think having a leveling process is a key component to any MMO because if you start out max level then your gear must obvioulsy suck and you'll have no concept to your class. You will be broke so you wont be able to buy enything and its just not that fun it'll get really boring
I see a lot of people complaining about how easy WoW is now and as fair as I even the casual's are finding it too easy to progress. I personally don't want to play something as hardcore as EQ but don't want something too easy, I want a happy medium. I'm hoping FFXIV works out well, I used to be a big fan of the series but stopped but what I've seen so far doesn't really great.
I think WoW is going to be the biggest WoW killer, personally I feel that TBC had it just right but they went a bit too overboard on the casual front and whilst they're bringing back CC and making Healing more like the old way I still think Cata will continue the trend. People who play MMO's don't want to be tied down and thats what they relied on in the beginning but making things too easy is not the solution.
WoW can be beaten yeah, but it would be extremely difficult. Look at the expansion deal. WotLK came out when Warhammer came out, coincidence? Now Aion has been out for awhile and here comes Cataclysm. WoW won't go down without a serious fight. It'll take a LONG time before anything comes along that can bring WoW down.
i think warhammer was a great game. the only thing they screwed up was during the first few months of play their servers were incredibly laggy and once you got to the endgame pvp you could not even do it because servers would crash with a measley little 50v50 battle over a keep. there were also a ton of bugs and glitches in the early stages... which with both of these problems caused less people to stay.
@barrett7212 its sad really because there is a ton of great concepts and ideas, and they are being wasted... and they have gotten so desperate that they have an unlimited free trial of the first 10 levels of the game, lol.
What will kill WoW is when a company figures out people will pay a monthly fee for an online game that is NOT an MMO.
What makes WoW successful is NOT that it's an MMO. It's the fact that it's a full world rich with lore, epic encounters, and magical creatures. It's that you can have short-term goals that give you rewards, while still having long-term goals.
Every problem in WoW is due to it being an MMO. I can't wait until someone figures this out.
I deffinately agree with the idea that some games shouldent have a leveling system. I play private servers for that exact reason. So i dont have to level and i can jump right into the pvp or go and to whatever...5mans, Old world and BC raids and ICC if i wish.
Like others have mentioned, there are some core ingredients solely belonging to MMO's that can't be removed. I believe leveling to be one of them, the grind will always be there IMO. Now, there might be different takes on how to level your character but in the end I think any successful MMORPG will have some form of it.
The things blizz did to make wow epic aren't exactly what you pointed out.. they took the good aspects of multiple games a WoW killer couldn't just base their game on WoW that's 90% of the genres problem. They diversified and in turn brought the numbers a developer would have to use aspects great and cut or fix what people don't like and cater to everyone to get the massive success of WoW. Problem in doing so the people who are so great at it blizzard are continually doing so themselves in WoW.
@NIN3LIVES Furthermore they came to the game with a great lore and fan base to begin with. To compete you'd have to bring a game like Mass Effect that has a big fan base and interesting lore that people are familiar with to the table. WoW can be knocked off it's top spot but it would be with no single idea it would be with an entire experience. With the power and success that blizzard has and the know how from actually being the game I feel they'll innovate faster than they can be surpassed.
@NIN3LIVES While you bring up good points, I must bring up the inevitable. Dungeons and Dragons: Online. If you enjoyed playing D&D then you will like the game. If you have ever played any other MMO, you will hate it. It's not solo friendly, it's pure dungeon fest, and you can't explore the world. The fanbase is actually larger than Warcraft by a huge margin. I do agree that the no single idea will bring it down. The problem is, blizzard keeps recreating their game with every expansion... :)
@fisk0411 Warhammer has a larger fan-base than WoW by a LONG shot. They don't all play the online game though. They play the RTS and Open Area Board Game versions a lot though. That's what the previous guy was talking about. The game has to have a big fan base. The customer base is something different. Warhammer failed to deliver, that's why it's almost a vacant wasteland now.
@NIN3LIVES I agree with what you're saying. If someone really did want to create an MMO with the power of WoW, they would have to make it out of something more people are familiar with (e.g. the Legend of Zelda.) So all of these people saying "Let's beat WoW!" are trying to fight a tank with a water pistol, i.e. they don't have what's required.
even thow i dont realy like the leveling expirence, i do think its nessesary to seperate the utter scrubs from somone that can atchly be commited to the game.
Something that wants to beat wow should have its own epic lore ...thats what is keeping me in wow not the gameplay ect ..its just the scenery that it is going on ...like the star wars stuff coming out soon thats gonna have solid fan base ..
WoW will die eventually, other MMOs on the horizon will continue to chip away at WoW but in the end Blizzard will be like Sony and kill its own creation. Blizzard's greed will be the WoW killer.
@NoonerV1 i really must agree with you there because like he mentioned in the first part of the video he said that people are complaining about how the expansions ruin the game itself and i agree with that to an extent but with the expansions making the game easier and easier wich is what blizzard is doing to attract a larger fan base and it does work but eventually it will die out because blizzard has just made the game to easy to be fun
just to point out a few things mate =) there was games that had persitting it =) just remember eye of the beholder =) U had lvling Ur party and it was it the same world everytime. yes in diff parts of it but the same world. but the ring world of D&D world os REALLY big =) then we had erlder scroll series =) there U had lvling and again in the same world from game to game =) but U forgat one major of the rpg games =) Finaly Fanatasy serie U had the lvling from day one =) other then that good show
It's not about beating Wow it's about taking the good stuff from wow and leaving out the garbage. Why does other games that aren't mmorpg do so well ? Battlefield for example has always done well.
Wow just gives too much power to one player over other players.
Large group content that is left up to player politics doesn't work out for everyone.
Why does mmoprgs like DDO work when it comes to running instances but, does Wow need all these gimps to find a group ?
@suggestedcolours yeah nice idea =) but they wil maybe make the travle part be more like mini towns where U have trainers buy/upgrade Ur weapons. and in hte major city/planets U'll have the ah and get the crafting trainers for special items or stuff like that. and might look abit away from the ship to ship battle that they tried in epic 40k think it was call that. cant remember to long again. but U might wanna look at the stargate mmo =)
I can't work out what I gained from watching this. I'm not saying it's useless, but your target audience is certainly not most of the WoW players that usually follow the Marmot. We all know this already.
I love the idea of being able to play an MMO that focuses purely on raiding. Or perhaps an MMO where you play as a 5 man group, (Dawn of war 2 X wow) and focus on building and gearing each player in that group.
@ParadoxJ12 It's not going to kill wow cause nothing will kill wow. However it will take a large group of people from wow. It has a good Ip. The idea that you can play the game solo and not ever need 1 person to finish a mission is an awesome idea.
Also the are focusing on making you feel like a hero. Not some scrub class working to be great. You start out great.
SWTOR might break some records in terms of sells but, It won't kill wow. It will give wow a beating though.
The gimmicks can sometimes be quite nice tough. Think borderlands. They took the talent point system and quest systems into an fps which is why its now one of my favourite games because of the customizable items.
@foobeatle I totally agree. I would put bioware in the top 3 rpg producers out there. If anyone has the experience and resources to beat WoW, I put my money on them. I definitely plan on being there when it's released.
@salyen15 oh me too lol im for sure buying it i mean i have tried CoH and CoV played villains cuz im a horde guy and like evil things lol but just didnt cut it after playing wow lol i really hope and believe bioware can do it star wars is pro so it has to be done lol
Yeah, GW blew ass now that I come to think of it. You had a good point, there wasn't much on the whole story progression side, but when I watched my friend play, he pwned the hell out of pvp.
See I think wow is so popular and its the best mmo on the market, I dont think anything can beat it. I mean they have Cataclysm coming up wich will be BIG when it does come out.
I'm missing ORIGINAL ideas in the MMO market. I've canceled WoW, although it is a great game, I'm bored with the current content. How about building on the UO concept (why, oh why was UOX cancelled???), of building skills and not leveling characters. Before EQ, UO was THE MMORPG on the market. They had a (fairly) large share of the players who had access to the internet, so there must be something to that concept.
I want to get away from the gear grind, the raiding and quest grind. It's old.
im liking Champions Online pvp, its almost as good as WoW arena. I'm also looking forward to Battle of the immortals. Not a lot of focus on pve and really good pvp.
WoW is about to hit a strugle point. The emrald dream is kinda the end. (After cat) I have no clue wha they will put after this, but u have 11.9M plays paying at least 12 dollars a month that income is very high,So I think there will be more after the Emrald Dream, but do not know what it will be. This may hurt WoW , or jsut keep it going.
I think what game companies are doing is making a generic MMO, and add some kind of signature feature of some sort, and hope that this feature is going to be the next "big thing". I think it would be a lot better if some company just makes a really good polished MMO, nothing super new or anything, just a really good MMO.
@waagemensch I think the only reason it would have any success is because it would be so much quicker than puging.
Sure you might fail the first 2 or 3 groups but instead of it taking all week to get those 2-3 groups, you might be able to run with 5 groups that day.
The only way for us to know is for them to test it, and i have a feeling that random raids might be a big addition with cataclysm.
the next big killer of WoW is something that adds another aspect to the game like what star wars the old republic online is looking at doing... the decision making that changes the outcome of the game due to the fact that it draws u into the character more
@Meeu3: but there wont be a new mmo in near time.. see they release a new addon soon (well this year ^.^) and starcarft 2 is in beta.. diablo 3 in the making, though there is a secret project but i do not think there isnt a mmo to be in at least 3-4 years.. my opinion
@Mbarnes3381 yes, but if you think about it, he enjoys what wow provides, if that experience was increased by another company, isnt that great? i believe thats the mindset he has =)
DND Online is a compelling example of taking instances to the next level, where there are four different levels, with interesting puzzles at the end of each section that you have to solve in order to move on. For quick runs, its pretty cool. I do like WoW's PvP, gear, and talent tree implementation. A combination of those two would be great.
True, but most games, at least all I've played, always have at least one "money sink". Lineage 2 has teleports, constant consumable use rather than repairs, WoW has repairs, gemming/enchanting, Diablo had repairs too, another old game played you had to buy lives, etc. When players just have too much money prices increase to compensate which is a giant pain.
I think its impossible or atleast very hard to kill WoW for one game, but i think it will either go down for 2 games or blizz will kill it with like WoW2. The other thing that can happen is that wow just uses expansions to be the best 4ever or until its too expensive to buy wow+8 expansions...
So, what about actually MASSIVELY multiplayer? You know, servers that can support over a million people at once. Anyone know when we'll have technology for it?
I think another reason wow is so successful too, is because the story is so epic and awesome. Warcraft really established some awesome characters, and awesome lore to build wow off of.
I went to warhammer went it first released well... there were bugs every pvp was either 1 side raped and other was fucked it was not worth it the grind was pretty bad too
Another thing that the gaming companies are going to have to take into consideration is the reason why blizzard games have become so succesful. They dont like buggy products. Starcraft 2 for example. Its been a hell of a long time, but they're also going to make sure it exceeds the standards from SC1. So if it means an extra 2 years of development, so be it. Most other companies will just throw it out there, and make the general public do the "beta testing" and "bug finding" for them.
/ disagree - see the attraction with wow is the "daily grid" the "questing" players build a bond with that character and i fail to see how they couldn't, the sense of accomplishment that comes with each level or that item you've been grinding is way to addictive to just forget about and more importantly your idea for a game where you can just create a character specifically for a dungeon sucks! imagine a high end dungeon full of in experienced players, if you want plug and play get an xbox!!

ugh if WoW didnt have a leveling system there would be WAY TO MANY nubs, It haunts my dreams!!

Poxik26 1 year ago
All the fanboy QQ still makes me laugh. About the same number of hardcore raiders are still doing heroics, and maybe the same number plus a little more are doing normals. Raiding is accessible to people who can only play 8 hours a week through extended lockouts.
Poxik26 1 year ago

However WoW is insanely fun, and is basically the standard MMOs have to beat for years to come
SpatulaNINJA114 1 year ago
i think having a leveling process is a key component to any MMO because if you start out max level then your gear must obvioulsy suck and you'll have no concept to your class. You will be broke so you wont be able to buy enything and its just not that fun it'll get really boring

When you were talking about the bad things that WoW made good, the bad things reminded me of runescape days.
Nargasharvog 1 year ago
I see a lot of people complaining about how easy WoW is now and as fair as I even the casual's are finding it too easy to progress. I personally don't want to play something as hardcore as EQ but don't want something too easy, I want a happy medium. I'm hoping FFXIV works out well, I used to be a big fan of the series but stopped but what I've seen so far doesn't really great.
LordOfTheWhores 1 year ago

It'll take a LONG time before anything comes along that can bring WoW down.

i think warhammer was a great game. the only thing they screwed up was during the first few months of play their servers were incredibly laggy and once you got to the endgame pvp you could not even do it because servers would crash with a measley little 50v50 battle over a keep. there were also a ton of bugs and glitches in the early stages... which with both of these problems caused less people to stay.
barrett7212 1 year ago
@barrett7212 its sad really because there is a ton of great concepts and ideas, and they are being wasted... and they have gotten so desperate that they have an unlimited free trial of the first 10 levels of the game, lol.
barrett7212 1 year ago
What will kill WoW is when a company figures out people will pay a monthly fee for an online game that is NOT an MMO.
What makes WoW successful is NOT that it's an MMO. It's the fact that it's a full world rich with lore, epic encounters, and magical creatures. It's that you can have short-term goals that give you rewards, while still having long-term goals.
Every problem in WoW is due to it being an MMO. I can't wait until someone figures this out.
Archangel1701D 1 year ago

NIN3LIVES 1 year ago 11
@NIN3LIVES Furthermore they came to the game with a great lore and fan base to begin with. To compete you'd have to bring a game like Mass Effect that has a big fan base and interesting lore that people are familiar with to the table. WoW can be knocked off it's top spot but it would be with no single idea it would be with an entire experience. With the power and success that blizzard has and the know how from actually being the game I feel they'll innovate faster than they can be surpassed.
NIN3LIVES 1 year ago 21
@NIN3LIVES While you bring up good points, I must bring up the inevitable. Dungeons and Dragons: Online. If you enjoyed playing D&D then you will like the game. If you have ever played any other MMO, you will hate it. It's not solo friendly, it's pure dungeon fest, and you can't explore the world. The fanbase is actually larger than Warcraft by a huge margin. I do agree that the no single idea will bring it down. The problem is, blizzard keeps recreating their game with every expansion... :)
Kardall 1 year ago
@Kardall lmao? There is no way that it has a higher fan base than WoW.
fisk0411 1 year ago
@fisk0411 Warhammer has a larger fan-base than WoW by a LONG shot. They don't all play the online game though. They play the RTS and Open Area Board Game versions a lot though. That's what the previous guy was talking about. The game has to have a big fan base. The customer base is something different. Warhammer failed to deliver, that's why it's almost a vacant wasteland now.
Kardall 1 year ago
@NIN3LIVES I agree with what you're saying. If someone really did want to create an MMO with the power of WoW, they would have to make it out of something more people are familiar with (e.g. the Legend of Zelda.) So all of these people saying "Let's beat WoW!" are trying to fight a tank with a water pistol, i.e. they don't have what's required.

I could tell you why.

It's old.

I think what game companies are doing is making a generic MMO, and add some kind of signature feature of some sort, and hope that this feature is going to be the next "big thing". Sure you might fail the first 2 or 3 groups but instead of it taking all week to get those 2-3 groups, you might be able to run with 5 groups that day.
The only way for us to know is for them to test it, and i have a feeling that random raids might be a big addition with cataclysm.
