You don't NEED over 4000MB to operate 64-bit OS, but if you have less that said amount of RAM, it may crash.
I mean, my laptop runs default 64-bit, but only has around 2000MB. The only reason it doesn't crash is because it has DDR3 (Double-Data rate 3), and acts as if it were twice the amount of RAM, meaning the speed compensates for the lack of 4GB physical memory, but if I were ever to exceed the 2000MB using programs, then it would crash.
i used to made my custom pc... last year i bought 4GB, and wen i tried to upgrade my PC to windows 7 i can´t. it says "this bios is not fully ACPI complain". by the way the setup was core 2 quad Q6600, motherboard intel DG31PR. i read and search over the internet without finding any solution, somewhere i read that the bios needs and upgrade but if i do it wrong ill have a useless PC, so my parents say dont waste money that way and bought me an Imac I5 instead.
Id you run DXDIAG on your comp, you should see that if it says 4000MB or over, you should be able to operate a 64-bit OS. You also have to check that your CPU supports performance OVER 64-bit, otherwise it won't work.
please anweser my i have only the intel core i5 manuel and it doesnt tell anything, so please some one awenser what kind of ram i need i haveintel core i5 3.2GHz 1333fsb and 4gb of ram
@MrRpgmakerkid Go to crucial.com and click "scan your computer". Download and run software (takes less than a minute and is completely harmless) and it will tell you exactly what RAM to get. Cheers!

@FreshApplePieOnXBL
Also, you can't use OEMs if there is already an OS on your HDD.
You can buy upgrade packages, or get someone else to do it for you.

You can have any kind of RAM, but if your OS is 32-bit, you don't need more than 4.
The best type of ram currently is 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 (Which is a pair of RAM sticks)
You should also make sure that the brands are the same and that they are in the same corresponding RAM slots.

@FreshApplePieOnXBL Thank you, although I am 64-bit and I heared pretty much up to 24GB of RAM could be installed on 64-bit right?

@MrRpgmakerkid
Too much RAM will slow down your computer.
Think of a stick as a table, and the CPU as a chef.
the more room on the able, the more things he'll be able to cook.
If it's too big, the chef will have trouble switching from table to table.

@MrRpgmakerkid 256GB is the limit for windows 7 ultimate, for all the other windows 7 versions the limit is 128GB
