Just seen this a few weeks ago. Absolutely love it. Not even a Beatles fan, but this is spectacular. One of the few ensembles where the drummer is the top man in the band.
Oh man, I **LOVE** that Alto sound (solo at 1:35)!!! According to the notes, it’s Bob Martin - definitely, a Monster. Such a Cool Sound, and a melodic, effortless solo. IN MY NEXT LIFE!!! (Love the comment, “Great drummer, maybe not as good as Ringo.” Hahahaha)
for some reason i highly doubt that anyone besides Buddy listened to the Beatles when this was played/recorded..but maybe i'm being judgmental or uber nerds
Atlantic City 1974 with Professor Corey opening the show. I sat in front and told Buddy that I drove 60 miles from Philly and that Ellis Tollin (Music City) and Armand Santarelli said hello. Then I asked him to play Group Shot. He asked, "What song?". I repeated, Group Shot. Then he yelled to his band , "81. Number 81". Then he smiled. I later learned he did not do requests when I had a private talk with Buddy outside the club . That night with Buddy was a BLESSING!
That's the absolute fewest notes in a solo I ever heard Bruno play. I had no idea he actually had the discipline to play the melody in anything. Good job, Jimmy.
None can compare to Jim Trimble's solo. ! Listen to the original album of '67 and better yet, on cassette and then CD. Carol Trimble is the name and Jon Trimble is our son.
@CTrimble100 Hello I remember this very well Jim was the original trombonist right on Big Swing Face ! I don't know whether I ever got to see him live my dad raised me on BR big-band and I even got to meet Buddy once at the Lambertvill NJ Music Circus but I have no way to tell if Jim Trimble was in the band at that time. This was when Richie Cole was in the band. Still 1 of my favorite melodies of all time and of course the high-energy arrangement here cannot be equaled anywhere else.
@UNCIEAL You're joking right? I'm a Beatles and Buddy Rich fan and Ringo was one of the worst drummers there was. Everyone knows that. On many of the recordings it wasn't even Ringo drumming. Talk about living off the backs opf others. Buddy Rich may have been a different style of drummer, but he was light years away from Ringo. Ringo doesn't even geat a look in.
@PINCHUNO When buddy rich played the fillmore east with 10 years after the audiance was yelling alvin bill grahme had buddy play norwegian wood to calm them down
actually buddy rich did take lessons. he would of course, have been the greatest without them.

@mothulicka "Norwegian Wood" was first released in 1965, well after The Beatles had gained fame.

I love how at 2:18 Buddy Rich turns around when the trumpet takes it up an octave and has the look of, "oh, its like that huh? niiice." haha!
