My dad knew all of the cool places to take me and my cousins. You probably went to Madison Hardware store on E 23rd St. too and talked to a fellow name Harry while you stared at all of the trains and accessories and watch the trains move in the front window of the store.I still have some old Lionel catalogs from them.
Not being Politically Correct,Gilbert's American Flyer were O.K. but, they'll always be the bastard stepchild and the ugly duckling of the industry and of collectors.Think of them as the Brooklyn Dodgers and Lionel as The New York Yankees-always the bridesmaid but, never the bride. Enuff Said !!!
owning, fixing and running these trains is pretty cool. dealing with pretentious collector idiots who think that a rusted, cracked and barely able to run piece is worth 300 bucks...not so much.
Y'all are gonna hate me for this but Lionel just dosnt add up to original gilbert American flyer s guage and none of that repo Lionel s guage just pure 40s and 50s Gilbert
Dad donated a Lionel Commodore Vanderbilt (1935 vintage) train set to an orphanage in the '60s. Hope the kids appreciated it. Was probably swiped by one of the staff.
Great childhood memory for me, thanks for posting this video. I had a modest HO train layout when I was young (1960-1968) but as punishment for a bad report card one year, my father made me sell it all.
my mom used to hate when i set my trains up but my dad would say "its better than those damn video games"but i have a table now and they are not in the living room anymore.
'49 showroom layout in action. I have this on DVD and watch it all time on my 50" plasma. Also, show is the smaller layout in the showroom. Mr. Cowen would be proud.
Best part is your gauranteed not to see ANY MTH rip-off junk.
The Hudson is 1943 postwar wit whistle tender and my grandfather is going 2 postwar cabooses and 7 postwar freight cars 2 are gondolas with there orginal loads which are pipes

Wish we could go back.

Nothing beats the sound, smells and pure enjoyment of a Lionel train. I feel sorry for the Nintendo and X-Box generations who are missing out...

And they still have not fixed those huge flanged wheels and taking off the darn middle rail.
RerailMe 1 year ago
@RerailMe The huge flanged wheels and middle rail are part of Lionel's character, they should never be removed.

@strafrag1 Did you also go to Polk's,which was nearby and push a lot of buttons. They had a special hobby on each floor.

@attommas Hi, yes I did. My first Marklin set came from Polks in 1964. Later a friend and I raced slot cars there too. Cheers,Peter
