It's hard to pick a song as the greatest RHP or Mark Kozelek song, but this could be a good candidate. At least I think there are two moments in this song that to me are almost miraculous and reach a spiritual level: around 5:57 to the beautiful minor chords on the piano at 6:33, and pushing even more with the bass at 7:52.
I love so much of Kozelek's stuff, however my wife (who shares very similar tastes) hates him which always baffles me, because I just think that his voice and his music is just so beautiful.
This song has always reminded me of my father,. and our increasingly distant and strained relationship following my parents' divorce. And then, years later, my father succumbed to cancer, while I was living and working in a different land, thousands of miles away. There was no closure, and this song has helped me cope like no other.
@ConfusingClarity I have a father, he wasnt around when I was younger until I was 17, he was a born again Christian, but all I see him as is a man who let his life lose control, now he reaps what he sowed, I forgave my father a long time ago for choosing drugs over me and my mom, but I still have that hate for him, I feel like he just wants to see me for money, its what has always driven him. Some people are just not ment to have a father in their life I guess.
I hear you fritz. Part of me feels a bit elitist with music, but then I realize that part of what makes Koz or other lesser-known artists so appealing is that we don't hear them all the time on the radio, see them on regular runs on video shows or on tv hawking chewing gum or skinny jeans. Those who are drawn away from the beaten path do so for a reason, just as do those who remain on it.
there are times where i think its ashame that Koz isnt in the charts, and isnt all that well known. then there are times when i think fuck them, we are the lucky ones that know what his music is, what it means, and just how much heart they have.
This is one of those songs that you either want to make love to or swallow a bottle of pills. If anyone can't be moved by this - they must already be dead.
listen to this song after you've just broken up with somebody, it becomes a totally different piece compared to when you're just bumping it on a sunny day and everything's a'ok... good old Koz
i shouldn't be listening to this
