i was remembered after world championship 1991, when Katrin Krabbe fall in drugs issue,, till now we didn't see any superb sprinter from Germany (west) anymore,, I mean,,little bit confuse here ,in last 70 till 90, Germany produce some talented and blasted sprinter like marrita Koch, Silke Gladish, Marlies Ghor,Katrin Krabbe,, compare it with US & Jamaican,, where are the German? they need more drugs??
the world record hasn't been broken in 26+ years! This doesn't happen with men. Are the women dedicated or not? I know they don't get paid as much maybe but damn. I'm not 26 yrs old yet.
i hear that these girls were on testosterone before the race(synthetic test wasnt detectable back then so they jabbed up before walking on track). and also there was a lot of oral turinabol going on and probably more shit. Apparently if a girl spoke with to deep a voice she was told by her coaches not to give interviews lol i dunno how much of that is true but no.1 they are running inhumanely quickly, its almost athough the GDR lane is in fast foward and No.2: those are some hairy ass armpits!!
No offence, but the East Germans and the Russians were talking the steriods and now they had to pay for the consequences of their actions. E.g: Health problems.
@beebeechitown My goodness.! Listen, it's moot to bemoan that the most of the athletes in the former Eastern bloc countries were on steroids. Besides, it was common knowledge back then & accepted. Doesn't make it right, but it was a fact. However, what the East Germans did well, drugs or not, was run relays. I want this 41.37 to stand as a testament to their greatness. The U.S. & JAM federations should send a contingent to learn how the GDR trained its sprinters. They were the best.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@kmb9624 I feel ya Homey.! Lot a peeps downin' the USA. I guess we gotta take our hits & lumps along wit' everyone else. Some of our high profile drug cheats have hurt our credibility. And where is Germany now. In the sprint world, they are practically non existent - thanks stricter drug laws. I wonder if this record were to be smashed by U.S. or Jamaica, would I be quick to say it's due to the drugs? This was the golden era of athletics, who cares if they were doping, it was great to watch, the only way everyone will be equal is to stop drug testing completely. For me Marita Koch is the great female athlete of all time.
espectacular el equipo de la- RDA- ADEMAS ESTE ESQUIPO YA ESTABA ESTABLECIDO DESDE EL AÑO 1979-CREO QUE FUE LA EXPERIENCIA DE ELLAS QUE YA SE CONOCIAN BIEN- NO CREO EN TODAS LA HABLADURIAS DE LOS ENVIDIOSOS-QUE SE DEJARON LLENAR LA CABEZA POR LOS-EE-UU-
(cont)even when an athlete of the GDR, or another socialist country, was tested at a risky moment, i.e., when her or his urine was expected to still contain metabolites of synthetic steroids or an above-normal T:E ratio, there was no reason to panic. From the written records, it appears that, usually, one of the members of the international doping control committee was able to clear away the sample
During the 1975 European Junior Championships in Athens, Greece, the 17-year-old rising 100-m sprint star, Marlies Oelsner, later known as Marlies Göhr, a world-record holder and Olympic gold medal winner, tested positive for androgenic steroids but the result was not published by the European Association. Then in fall 1977, the female shot-put star Ilona Slupianek was found positive for nandrolone at a Europe Cup meeting in Helsinki and was banned. However, she was soon allowed to compete again
(cont)and to improve her German record in the summer of 1978, and in 1980 to win the Olympic gold medal and improve the world record to 22.45 m. These were the only two cases in which GDR athletes had ever publicly tested positive for steroids.
Sprinters trained differently in those days, they really never worked out with weights, thats why they didn't have the big muscles. Also most drugs during the eastern block years were mainly male hormones, unlike today were most of the drugs are for endurance and recovery!
I disagree, you cannot say that koch and kratchiovia had the same stuff. 2 totally different athletes. I read Kochs training regime in her Biography and her training was not to different to Michael Johnsons, and we dont question his endeavours do we? And koch went on to have a family as well as other Eastern block sprinters. Some i know like swimmers and throwers became ill later on, but koch i believe was protected better than others despite what the so called statsis later showed.
Marita Koch was the real deal as an athlete and her season after season after season at the top of the tree emphasised that unlike the so called "superstar" of Flo Jo who only had one season at the top in 1988. Americans are good to point fingers at other countries but their fingers are crooked. They are all pointed back at them. They should read a book called "Speed Trap" which exposes their athletes once and for all!
Koch was obviously doped. look at the speed which she runs the first 200 of her 47.60 - and still has the endurance in the straight. That sort of performance is NOT NATURAL.
Why do you think no one is running within 0.5 of a second of that time 23 years on with modern science and facilities.
To even consider her to be a clean athlete is ridiculous.
So what, and thats exactly the attitude of the authorities as well. Regardless of whether she was clean or not nothings getting done about it, therefore nothing changes. It was still an incredible run and will be remembered as such. Move on. Get over it, because except for a few on these pages its not even an issue.
It is just a shame that there a decent athletes out there that get tainted by the same brush as the druggies of Marion Jones etc. Athletes like Seb Coe, Marita Koch, Ed Moses, Michael Johnson were all fantastic athletes for years - END OF!
There was no out of competition testing. Of course they didn't catch her...
wake up and smell the coffee, the woman was a cheat. It doesn't matter what natinality you are, how nice/nasty you seem, if you set a WR in those days your performance is in doubt. Especially if it still stands.
So what about Flo Jo ??? How do you explain how she was a nobody in 1987 then all of a sudden she became out of this world in 1988??? It would be more credible if Flo Jo could've sustained this level or anywhere near it either before or since (yeah yeah we all know she immediately retired after the 1988 Olympics). Flo Jo was a DRUGGIE!!!
Well said RabCGiblet I second the comments u make regarding the great Marita Koch. It is all too easy for people to diss her achievements and say they were drug tainted but she NEVER got tested positive for ANYTHING so for me that is good enough. Seb Coe never got tested for anything either but no one would ever question his achievements in any way.
It's sad as in the end nobody really wins. Times are set that no one can beat therefore stop considering. Athletes suffer sickness and death prematurely. The sport is tainted for generations. I say bring in random blood testing. 23 YEARS on this fake record still stands, teams since have rightly been concerned with medals not beating this bogus figure. Who knows when it will be legitimately surpassed.
Yes drugs, but what an incredible technic in her changings wich are perfect. That mean hours of training and its the clue for the record. Check the unified german team (Dreschler, krabbe, Breuer...)in 1991 world championships, what a chaos....Drugs dont make all the work!
to gohrman true. shame the east germans used drugs. could have been fun to see how well they would do without drugs. the had a effecient system of finding talents and training them. shame shame - could have been so nice to see Koch in 400m without drugs. So sad if she could have the W.R. without drugs in a way. I know she hasn´t admitted to taking drugs and maybe she hasn´t?
I suppose it is so easy to speculate and ramble about how things unfolded back in the day.
I don't think people should make accusations or be so presumptuous. There is so much to an athlete...perseverance, temperament, discipline, diet, etc.
People should think before they speak about a subject such as drug use in sports because it is all speculation.
no its not speculation its fact The GDR and the other 'Eastern bloc' countries were all on it look at Ludmila Kractocvilova. I saw her 10 years ago as a team manger for the Czech team she actually looked femail. Think back to those famous races between her and Koch. Athletics is in a hell of a mess with little credability, Im just waiting to see if Bolt and Powell et al will test positive. Isnt that a very pessimistic and sad thought, but I bet im not the only one thinking along those lines ?
People say flo jo was clean just because she was tested like every other athlete, but hey what about marion jones (clear and epo) she always tested negative...
Isn't it amazing how the cold war had such an effect on althletics. The East Germans and Russians used to dominate this sport cause their governments thought it was effective propaganda, and now The Germans and the Russians are absolute nobodys in track and field cause they can't get away with the drug taking anymore. All their records should be wiped!
well actualy the russians girls are still here, not in the sprints event but in the world championships they always finish 2nd or 3rd in the medal table.
yes that's true, But the dominance they used to have across sport is gone. I only associate them with shot-puts and discus' now, it wasn't like that 15 years ago
listen ppl american should be called the the land of doping for god sakes go to wikipedia and look for list of athletes for drugs and see how american athletes stand out incredibly in this list it could even be a world record for god sakes
stypid fuking doping shit.. makes sport lose intrests. It's good that testing has gotten better nowdays. But i bet there still are people who use doping. And a line what u can use and can't might not be so clear nowdays.
mate no offence or nuttin but most of these records are held by eastern eurpean drugged up robots u get me even now there still all drugged up the yankees 2
my view is that the eastern europeans n the americans= biggest cheats in athletics
I also hope no woman ever beats flojos records. Because then the whole circle will start again and all it will do is hurt the sport. But as i have said many times previous this debate will go on forever more.
Oh dear looks like we have a case of suffering with Tourettes syndrome here. You want to go and listen to yourself "Magician!!" And i'll tell you now if she was clean shed be alive today bringing up a family and been happy.
Unfortunetely she sacrificed that for olympic glory. Bad decision.
why must we continue to hate on flo jo. she was tested like every other athlete. one day her record will be broken when the next phenom comes along, until then she will remain the greatest woman sprinter in history. 10.4 21.3 ())48.1 relay split
She didnt get caught because the testing was so inferior to the drugs she was taking. You can only test for drugs that you are aware of. Just look at the latest designer drugs. Did you know she was told to retire after Seoul. The Olympic committee didnt want a second high profile athlete after Johnson to be disqulaified. No other Olympic champion in recent times has ever retired so soo after. They compete on the circuit to cLaim there rewards
can somebody tell me which they did not remove the records of 41.37 for east germany,12.21 donkova,47.60 marita koch,10.49/21.34 flo jo, 800 record all of those were drug addicts she should be disqualified
Are u fucking retarted you should listen to you self only one of therm u named was caught, flo jo never took anything if she did she would have been caught, she is a magicien u no.
Oh yes, I always state those records should be wiped out from the books and I invariably forgot to mention Yordanka Donkova's massive 12.21; maybe it's just because she went on with her career when the Iron Curtain fell (albeit in a less competitive fashion and with more modest PBs) but it's clear to me she was also doped.
They weren't caught when they were competing but when the wall came down there were files found syaing that doping had been used to prove that doping had been done. That's why there's no benefit of the doubt with the East germans. Anyone who follows track and field knows that the cheats are always one step ahead of the testers.
I read that this team was drugged up as well. One athlete, not in this relay, but a part of the East German team, that was suspended for doping was Katrina Krabbe. If they had been caught doping, the U.S women would have the world record with their time of 41.47s from the W.C in Athens 1997. It is currently second on the all-time best list behind this race. Gaines, Jones, Miller, and Devers tore the track apart!! Does anyone have that race?
ha that is slow compared to how fast flo jo ran her 100m in her relay, she ran a 8.5 second when she used all her speed, and starting off in a relay is slower.
steroids! no way that could happen...the US has always seemed to have been the most successful in the 4x100 and hasn't even gotten that record yet, just like Flo Jo's record and the 400m and 800m records. looks cool tho.
This record will be broken by the US women at the 2012 Olympics with absolutely NO DOUBT in my mind

This was the golden era of athletics, who cares if they were doping, it was great to watch, the only way everyone will be equal is to stop drug testing completely. For me Marita Koch is the great female athlete of all time.

Marita Koch was the best ever! her 400m World Record will stand for a very VERY long time and she was clean unlike the Queen of Steroids Flo Jo.

41.37?
I don't understand! Doesn't this mean that the average 100m was less than 10.35?
What woman on earth ever had a history of 100m in anywhere near 10.35 seconds?

I say make the athletes take lie detectors. If they are clean they will have no problem taking a test will they?

East German team were not built like dopers like Jones etc. All 4 were of thin build.
And if they had of been dopers surely the Aussie testing would of sussed them.
Have to give them the benefit here.
RabCGiblet 3 years ago
Sprinters trained differently in those days, they really never worked out with weights, thats why they didn't have the big muscles. Also most drugs during the eastern block years were mainly male hormones, unlike today were most of the drugs are for endurance and recovery!
butler372 3 years ago

They should read a book called "Speed Trap" which exposes their athletes once and for all!
aquamarineeyes 3 years ago
Koch was obviously doped. look at the speed which she runs the first 200 of her 47.60 - and still has the endurance in the straight. That sort of performance is NOT NATURAL.
Why do you think no one is running within 0.5 of a second of that time 23 years on with modern science and facilities.
To even consider her to be a clean athlete is ridiculous.
mc1703 3 years ago
So what, and thats exactly the attitude of the authorities as well. Regardless of whether she was clean or not nothings getting done about it, therefore nothing changes. It was still an incredible run and will be remembered as such. Move on. Get over it, because except for a few on these pages its not even an issue.
RabCGiblet 3 years ago
"So what"
I think that says it all...

Jealousy is a terrible thing. I bet if the great Marita Koch was American it would be a different story.
aquamarineeyes 3 years ago
i see on thse things all the time defending the druggists
Icecoldhard 3 years ago
It is just a shame that there a decent athletes out there that get tainted by the same brush as the druggies of Marion Jones etc. Athletes like Seb Coe, Marita Koch, Ed Moses, Michael Johnson were all fantastic athletes for years - END OF!
aquamarineeyes 3 years ago
Koch!!! you are bonkers!!!
There was no out of competition testing. Of course they didn't catch her...
wake up and smell the coffee, the woman was a cheat. It doesn't matter what natinality you are, how nice/nasty you seem, if you set a WR in those days your performance is in doubt. Especially if it still stands.
mc1703 3 years ago
So what about Flo Jo ??? How do you explain how she was a nobody in 1987 then all of a sudden she became out of this world in 1988??? It would be more credible if Flo Jo could've sustained this level or anywhere near it either before or since (yeah yeah we all know she immediately retired after the 1988 Olympics). Flo Jo was a DRUGGIE!!!
aquamarineeyes 3 years ago
yeh she's a likely cheat too, what's your point. I'm a pesimist on these things.
you're preaching to the converted. hell it wouldn't really surprise me if lewis was doped.
mc1703 3 years ago
Well said RabCGiblet I second the comments u make regarding the great Marita Koch. It is all too easy for people to diss her achievements and say they were drug tainted but she NEVER got tested positive for ANYTHING so for me that is good enough. Seb Coe never got tested for anything either but no one would ever question his achievements in any way.
aquamarineeyes 3 years ago
The drugs DO work!

Check the unified german team (Dreschler, krabbe, Breuer...)in 1991 world championships, what a chaos....Drugs dont make all the work!
gorhman 4 years ago
to gohrman true. shame the east germans used drugs. could have been fun to see how well they would do without drugs. the had a effecient system of finding talents and training them. shame shame - could have been so nice to see Koch in 400m without drugs. So sad if she could have the W.R. without drugs in a way. I know she hasn´t admitted to taking drugs and maybe she hasn´t?

dude their drug use was documented , nobody is shooting in the dark , the drug use by there athletes were systematic , duh !!

VictoriaAbrilenAtame 4 years ago
no its not speculation its fact The GDR and the other 'Eastern bloc' countries were all on it look at Ludmila Kractocvilova.

Isn't it amazing how the cold war had such an effect on althletics. The East Germans and Russians used to dominate this sport cause their governments thought it was effective propaganda, and now The Germans and the Russians are absolute nobodys in track and field cause they can't get away with the drug taking anymore. All their records should be wiped!
Aarontlondon 4 years ago
well actualy the russians girls are still here, not in the sprints event but in the world championships they always finish 2nd or 3rd in the medal table.

yes that's true, But the dominance they used to have across sport is gone. I only associate them with shot-puts and discus' now, it wasn't like that 15 years ago

my view is that the eastern europeans n the americans= biggest cheats in athletics

I also hope no woman ever beats flojos records. Because then the whole circle will start again and all it will do is hurt the sport. But as i have said many times previous this debate will go on forever more.
Dementedhighlander 4 years ago
Oh dear looks like we have a case of suffering with Tourettes syndrome here. You want to go and listen to yourself "Magician!!" And i'll tell you now if she was clean shed be alive today bringing up a family and been happy.
Unfortunetely she sacrificed that for olympic glory. Bad decision.
Dementedhighlander 4 years ago
why must we continue to hate on flo jo. she was tested like every other athlete. one day her record will be broken when the next phenom comes along, until then she will remain the greatest woman sprinter in history. 10.4 21.3 ())48.1 relay split
ALYAHS4 4 years ago
I hope no one ever beats flo jo at all.
lacheyrulez 4 years ago
She didnt get caught because the testing was so inferior to the drugs she was taking. You can only test for drugs that you are aware of. Just look at the latest designer drugs. Did you know she was told to retire after Seoul. The Olympic committee didnt want a second high profile athlete after Johnson to be disqulaified. No other Olympic champion in recent times has ever retired so soo after. They compete on the circuit to cLaim there rewards
hurdler600 3 years ago
can somebody tell me which they did not remove the records of 41.37 for east germany,12.21 donkova,47.60 marita koch,10.49/21.34 flo jo, 800 record all of those were drug addicts she should be disqualified

Oh yes, I always state those records should be wiped out from the books and I invariably forgot to mention Yordanka Donkova's massive 12.21; maybe it's just because she went on with her career when the Iron Curtain fell (albeit in a less competitive fashion and with more modest PBs) but it's clear to me she was also doped.

old drug mules usa east germany women
roxroyd 4 years ago
They weren't caught when they were competing but when the wall came down there were files found syaing that doping had been used to prove that doping had been done. That's why there's no benefit of the doubt with the East germans. Anyone who follows track and field knows that the cheats are always one step ahead of the testers.
Rettamann 4 years ago
Ifs, its all ifs they were not caught doping. So just like jones and flojo we will have to give the benefit of the doubt wont we??!!
chigaloo2 4 years ago
I read that this team was drugged up as well. One athlete, not in this relay, but a part of the East German team, that was suspended for doping was Katrina Krabbe. If they had been caught doping, the U.S women would have the world record with their time of 41.47s from the W.C in Athens 1997. It is currently second on the all-time best list behind this race. Gaines, Jones, Miller, and Devers tore the track apart!! Does anyone have that race?
