My best friend introduced me to this song when we first met. He called me and reminded me of it tonight when I was crying because my parents were fighting. Listening to this song makes me remember how beautiful it was when I first listened to Sun Kil Moon. And Mark Kozelek has an amazing voice :-)
@spuffchops70 I like all of Mark's previous efforts, but honestly, I can't stand Admiral Fell Promises. Yeah, I know you didn't ask me, but perhaps someone else out there feels the same? It just doesn't have the same effect on me as past albums.
@nojohnso Yeah me too. It's not terrible but it's less engaging than his other records. Still, gotta respect the Koz for going out of his comfort zone. Incidentally, this song right here is beyond amazing.
@nojohnso yeah I agree, the only song on it that I really liked was Half Moon Bay. Ghosts of the Great Highway is still my favorite, but he's had so many other great songs.
i jus hate how ppl die especially greay boxers like salvador sanchez and duk koo kim they had so much to offer if only they wouldve lived this world wouldve been better such better souls woudve roamed rip all fallen boxers i pay u my respects...
@spuffchops70 I wasn't saying the song was depressing, I was referring to Kozelek's style and substance. I too hadn't any knowledge behind this song, until reading about it. I assume you're a SKM fan also? If so, I appreciate your taste in music.
@dieselrepublic Yep, I became hooked on Mark's music in the summer of '96 (oops, that sounds like a Bryan Adams tune...) Followed pretty much everything he's done since. A lot of the music I appreciate, be it Tim Buckley, Nick Drake, SWANS (whatever), many people find depressive, but I find therapeutic & uplifting. Different strokes for different folks, as the cliche goes...this is a gem of an album.
Whatever the case, this song, in fact, this whole album is magical. I've been a Kozelek fan since his RHP days and still a huge fan today. Depressing, dark and even somewhat morbid, Kozelek is a songwriter at his best.
@dieselrepublic I hadn't realised the background of the Duk/Mancini story. Morbid, yes, but I don't find this song depressing in the least. It's epic in the way it nails the definition of ineffable yearning & melancholy. A songwriter at its best, as you say.
Strange story...A boxer dies after his fight, mother then soon commits suicide and the referee of the fight also commits suicide...Also became the begining of the end of Boom Boom Mancini's boxing career...Rest in Peace...

@dieselrepublic What's the verdict on 'Admiral fell Promises'? I haven't rushed out and purchased it yet, although I probably really should have.

I find most of the saddest music the most beautiful. This song has a great melancholy feel.

@barrettd04 I agree! Do you listen to Steven Wilson (from the band Porcupine Tree). He made a similar quote!
