The unsustainable African Grey Parrot trade in South Africa

My african grey was abused and so we took care of her, she free to roam the house and i take a Walk with her every now and then; she eats dinner/lunch/breakfast with us. I am happy for her. She has her own food, and water ofcourse.

Parrots do not make good pets even though we may love them dearly. They are best left in the wild. Take the money you might spend on a parrot and visit the country it came from. Support Eco tourism in regions where parrots still fly wild. You wouldnt keep a dog in a cage in your home. A parrot should not be in one either. Educate educate ... Parrots are stressed in captivity even domestically raised birds. Visit parrots in a rehab center to see them up close and film them in the wild.

It's the FUCKING GOVERNMENT'S FAULT to start put the blame on and finger pointing to for not doing anything to close the borders into our country. They opened the border in 1995 to all illegal immigrants free to come and go as they please. So it's no issue for the smugglers to get through. It's as easy as 1, 2, 3 and you're through without sneaking or watching out for guards who might catch them. There's no effort what so ever. A canal has already been made for them over the border into ZA.

You know what's the big problem? Most of us believe that we get birds that are captively bred. They aren't wild caught, hence not a problem. That's true. However, the breeding pairs are caught from the wild. Wild caught birds make the best parents. The more the demand of captively bred birds, the more birds are captured from the wild to fulfill our demands of captively bred birds.

As long as the human population in places where wild parrots live keeps on growing, some of those people are going to capture and sell parrots and other wildlife to feed all those hungry mouths. Family planning education for the people would be a great investment for protecting wildlife and maintaining political stability.

People must bear in mind, that if Americans & Europeans hadn't robbed & raped African nations of their natural resources, leaving the people with nothing, & their leaders the only beneficiaries, bird, animal & HUMAN trade wouldn't be nearly as chronic. Don't get me wrong, I am also fully aware of what the White SA Apartheid regime did to rob the SA Black population. Most wouldn't believe how many Rhinos are currently been poached for their horns! yes its true... I wander though what could be done. I mean in deeper meaning of the problem. The poachers are doing this for money, more jobs need to be created and as we go into this problem it is getting more complicated. People want to survive feed their children... those who are responsible for these basic needs at the higher governmental level need to do their job-to create jobs. I think. Is NEVER EASY to change the world.

The easiest way to make sure your bird is captive bred is to make sure they have solid rings, not the bendable ones. Ban imports from Central Africa but support local industry.

Hard to think of anything much sadder. I have a Grey and I have learned my lesson!!! I will not be buying any more birds, even if they say they are people raised. You just never know. I LOVE my birds all of whom I think are people raised or I would not have gotten them. They were all babies. But this is barbaric and wrong and has to stop!! Poor birds!!!
