  • @ianochristensen Roland FP-4. Thanks.

  • I was soloing over this track and in the middle you were comping on the ands and I was playing on the downs and it sounded soooo cool.

  • In the middle of playing an awesome riff going along with my alto sax and it stops because it was buffereing. DARN YOU YOU TUBE!!

  • @pollqwerty lol ;-)

  • very very helpful! thanks so much for posting! I really appreciate it!

  • @musicismostoflife Thanks for your comment.

  • I have noticed that in a lot of your videos, you have these chromatic basslines. However, I am just writing to ask if there is a specific way/code that you use to create these basslines, or do you just use random chromatic notes? Brilliant playing btw.

  • hands down best rhythm changes backing track

  • brilliant playing

  • @bendugard Thanks for your comment.

  • You seem like a hell of a pianist. :)

  • @maydecember513 Thank you.

  • a retarded gem i was once told:

comping = accompanying, complementing, AND composing! oh wow!

  • This sounds exactly like Oleo from Sonny Rollins

  • thats because its the same chord progression :)

  • @danbabs haha if youre not a musician youve got great ears

  • You have a developed sound with good phrasing. Keep it up!

  • Nice video man. You didn't just concentrate on block voicings but get a bit into voice leading and contrasting sections... very helpful.

  • I appreciate the comment.

  • Bebop 101! Hey, I love the Abmaj7#5/Bb at the end...I guess that's also Bb13#11

  • Thanks Modes9.

  • its very difficult to teach comping cos it all comes down to the performance and the feel of the music... most musicians after a while pick up on this though so know when to play busy or laid back

  • very nice and well done. Can you show one demonstrating a nice Blues in 7 (Blue jazz I meant, not a simple V/IV)?

  • i thought it's shortened from 'accompaniato' or stuff, but anyway thanks for info :)

  • does comping term means playing in 4/4 straight feel, or just generally playing as a background?

  • It's short for acCOMPaniment. Not just in 4 but any harmony under the soloist.

  • @indagdnm Well, it's actually short for COMPlimenting, but I can see where you would get that from.

  • @SiAugust23 Actually, it's both.

  • thanks for the sweet jam track. i love playin' rhythm changes on my bari!

  • Thanks for sharing!

  • wow. thanks a lot.

  • Thanks.. i've been looking for some different backings and this is awesome.

  • NICE WORK! THANKS!

  • that's exactly what i need^^ thanks man^^

  • piano is so confusing...i've been playing for 12 years and i still suck lol

  • speechless!

  • Fantastic. I'm trying to download the midi file for my disclavier from divshare and not getting any success. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • Man this is awesome. I play gospel and i ahve been trying this style for years. how can i can to level or where should i begin to ge this style.. thanks.

  • I'd like to see you solo over this. Do you use the same comping techniques for yourself or do you let the comping interact? I'm working on The Eternal Triangle in Bb, and I'm having some issues. I'll post it when I feel comfortable.

  • I play Eternal Triangle with the quintet I'm in - great tune, can't wait to hear your post.

The above exercise is an example of supporting another soloist. When I comp for myself obviously it's different. You can check out some of my other videos to get an idea how I comp during my solos.

  • Nice. Thanks for posting! This is great! Lots of tips and improvisation inspiration here!

  • Great comping! real joy to play over am working on Anthropology will post a vid when I'm ready

  • Great video - great playing!!

I'll have fun soloing over this before i settle down to the hard work of studying your comping.

Loads of good ideas though, thanks man.

  • Thanks for the nice comment Nick.

  • See this scares the crap outta me. Rhythm changes, more like the Devil's changes ^_^. My brain can't handle all those changes at that speed YET. Awesome mastery you have shown L2L.

  • Hey Roge, Nice one, as usual :-) Regards, Menno

  • Great Playing! I downloaded the MIDI and found that unlike the song these changes are based on, I Ain't Got Rhythym. Since there isn't any bass and the traps are constant, I get out of sync when turning off the piano track. I guess I'll have to figure out how to add a bass track.

  • Two handed comping is a negleted skill. This is really illustrative of the process. I know in hearing your combo work, that you are constantly responding to the soloist and filling in the gaps. This was a really good idea to post.

  • Comping is really hard to teach, and you did really well.

Playing at full speed really helps to show what is going on.

    Wonderful.
