I think the problem is that Tsunku wrote the English lyrics. And I doubt he knew English well enough to know how awkward this sounds in English. But their voices aren't terrible.
I think half the awkwardness is due to the fact that this song was originally in Japanese.
It must be difficult to fit English lyrics into an originally Japanese song. Especially if it is an accurate translation. That may be why it sounds off-key.
I also think Coconuts Musume's videos were dull compared with Morning Musume's.
I like this version. Though I feel Mika's voice sounds a little weird because of the key or maybe it's that I perfer her vocals in Japanese. She just has a stronger voice singing in Japanese.
It's not that strange that some japanese lines were kept. In the chinese version of Renai Revolution 21 for example cho cho cho ii kanji was kept even though that's japanese. Some lines help keep the song's original "feel" or something so you don't translate them (if that makes any sense, LOL)
Hey they say "daikirai" and "daisuki"? wtf xD Whatever... this is a little weird for me x_x this version is not THAT bad, but I still prefer old school Morning Musume version D: !
What? In the original version the say 'daikirai daikirai daikirai daisuki', the same as they say it here. Those are the only lyrics that are the same. There was a video from the show where they had Momusu listen to this when Coconuts first came out and they were shocked because they used those few Japanese lyrics from the original, but everything else was English.
By that rule it'd be weird that they say "Help, me, help me, help me" in Resonant Blue, or that they say "Happy, Happy Happy Happy Happy has come" in Bon Kyu Bon Kyu Bomb Girl or.. well, I won't name all the instances of English words in japanese songs... But "Morning" itself is an English word...
I agree the English version is "wordy" so the words sound rushed and muddled. Singing translations is hard. It takes a lot to fit words that make sense with the melody. Also the girls singing the back up parts are really out of tune. There are some really bad notes in there. Listen around 1:50, it's like nails on a chalkboard. The original doesn't have that. He did pull the better singers for the leads. He even does w/ Momsu. Michishige rarely has a lead & she's a weak singer.
Either the song doesn't lend itself to English singing, or the translation is too wordy... or they just rushed the girls into the studio. I don't know, songs like this don't have much impact in English I guess, maybe it's a bit of all of the above. I've heard that Japanese prefer singers not to be too professional so they can relate to them better, but I think that a few vocal lessons don't hurt a person's style. Still you can tell that Ayaka & Mika had some potential which Tsunku squandered.
i wish they were allowed higher budgets...they could have been awesome...poor April got shafted in all of the four songs she was in...she didn't get ANY lines in Halation Summer or Dance & Chance...im not sure about Summer Night Town or Zurui Onna...

I hate how is mix and video seem so low budget compared to the MM version. Their hair and makeup are really sad too. Why can't they be treated like MM? Tsunku must be a racist.
the songs ok, fan service yeah.....cheesecake. been a longtime fan of MM, and Ayaka`s supprise english lessons and Mini Moni Squad Yoropiku !, last decent video I saw before fading from the Musume and graduating to Halcali and Koda Kumi and Ayumi of course was The Manpower another Edition....nice cheerleader song, Gotta appreciate the Eagles Basketball team (Japan)....good post though an old favorite....just having a reflection day here see ya ! Ja matta
I think Tsunku should let someone else do the English version...because "feel me & touch me tonight" means that these teenagers mean sex (remember this came out in 1999). Now 2000 and on it was a totally different meaning.
i think this version is great. i tend to listen to it more than the original version of it. that would have been awesome if they had Coconuts Musume do more english versions of Morning Musume's songs
Would've sounded better if they had Ayaka and Danielle carry the ad-libs, and had Danielle, April and Chelsea do the melody, and Mika on the harmony. Ayaka doesn't have the voice for a melody and the song is too low for Mika.
That's true in English... In Japanese, she's greater with higher notes. She did higher notes in MiniMoni, and an powerful EXCELLENT upper harmony in "Egao No Date, Saigo No Date".
well... i hope is the video quality ,but i didn't say they are gan-guro only that they look like them...lol.. by the way...i dont like michisige and i dont think she's the next rika...rika was natural and i think michisige is like acting 'cause she wants to be a new rika or the more kawaii...
Well, actually the PV's quality is making them look like they're gan-guro girls. This is .avi quality, and you know that once you upload an .avi file, the quality of it will be blurry and disfigured. They don't have any gan-guro-like makeup at all. ^_^
Seriously, there should be some type of standard. Even Sayumi Michige should not be anywhere near a mass audience pop group until she gets her act together. You don't get your act together WHILE you are in a signed group. You do it BEFORE you are in a signed group.
Calm down, Tsunku chose her, because she'll be the next "Charmy"(aka Rika Ishikawa). She has a great sense of humor(e.g her narcissistic attitude; being all cute with her "Usa-chan peace!"), and her singing improved also. That's why Tsunku chose her. Doubt that you would make it, though.
No, Michishige was given an average of THREE lines in the last FOUR singles. Her singing hasn't improved at all. Her and Kusumi are being the lost cases in terms of voice. They're there for fan service. Sayumi is there to be the cute character who's bad at singing (Charmy II like you said, because Ishikawa isn't a strong singer either)...
...and Kusumi got the solo career BECAUSE she provided a voice for an anime---a part originally intended for Yaguchi! If Yaguchi wouldn't have quit Morning Musume, Kusumi would be a glorified backup dancer along with Michishige.
Ayaka makes me want to take 'Surprise English Lessons' with her (lol)

To be honest I really don't like this version. . . :[
It's just my opinion,
But I think the American accents all the way through and how they look orange in half of it ruins a really good Morning Musume song. . .
