  • WoW! I've been shooting as a freelancing amateur for a few years and sadly I'm useless with flashing accurately. I end up with a limited scope of the type if shots that I can capture exactly the way I would like to. Thanks to you I've so much more control over my lighting... THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

  • @theorn01 You're very welcome! Well that's awesome to hear and glad you found my flash mini-series useful! Happy Holidays and Happy Shooting!

  • Thanks for taking the time to make this video its just what I was looking for :)

  • @pjos111 You're welcome! Glad you found it useful!

  • @binarygraphite Am I right to say that Shutter speed controls Ambient light and its the Aperture that controls the flash?

  • can you tell me which song/music is it in your intor of the videos.... i liek that that choice as well..

  • @swapnilhitman Hi! Sorry for the late reply. This is one of my own songs off my album (Just Listen and I go under the artist name I Z B) called "Demon of Groove". I have it available on iTunes and CD Baby (I just put an app up on my Facebook Page.

  • Hi Imre, very useful video! I appreciate your time and help. However, may I please know what the shutter speed should be set at? I notice that a slower shutter speed will yield more ambient light in the picture, however I do not know hot to incorporate it with different f.stop, could you please elaborate on that matter a little bit more?

  • @Meo0403 Hi! Sorry for the delay! Your question is not an easy one to answer as there could be many factors involved. A few answers I can provide are this. When shooting with a flash, usually the shutter speed is set at or below the x-sync speed (I have another video on this in my flash mini-series). In such a case, either the flash power, ISO (sensitivity), and/or the aperture is adjusted to get a "correct" exposure. Indeed you can also slow the shutter speed to get more ambient light too.

  • @Meo0403 But the camera mode you are using can jump into the mix as well. For example, in aperture priority (A) mode you wouldn't need to worry much about the shutter speed as the camera would set it for you (same in auto mode). in A mode you could still adjust though by using EV compensation (the +/- button) or by varying ISO and/or flash power output. As for shutter priority (S) mode you would set the speed to at or below x-sync and the camera would take care of the aperture setting.

  • @Meo0403 And of course in full manual mode you would need to set up all the values, hence why most photographers who use this mode often have a light meter to make their lives easier; although through trial and error one could get the exposure s/he wanted. So like I said, it's tough to provide you with an exact answer, but I hope I helped out a little at least.

  • Hey Imre, great video, awesome the tips. Now I have a question about the formula. Im a photographer and nature photography has become my thing. I use a flash with a guide number 140 feet, and I shoot at f/8 or f/11 cause of the teleconverter. Since my lens is higher then 300mm I use a better beamer. the manufacturer says it busts your flash by 3 stops, what does it mean regarding my reach and how will that effect your formula if I try to calculated if Im close enough to get a good fill light?

  • @alexher78 Hi! Thanks for the comment and sorry for the very late reply!! As far as I can tell, you should be able to subtract the number of stops the Beamer "provides" from your aperture and use that in the calculation. So if you are shooting f/11 and the Beamer gives +3 stops then you could use f/4. So if your guide number is 140 then: 140/f/4 = 35 feet versus 140/f/11 = almost 13 feet

  • Really good video! I learned something. Thanks so much.

  • @advert25 You're very welcome! :)

  • Imre, thanks for another great tutorial.

I'm presently looking for a flash so this series is at a most opportune time for me.

I'll wait till your series runs so that I'm sure to get what I need.

    Best to you

  • Thank you geru2000, I appreciate the compliment. Hopefully you'll be able to get the right flash for your needs.
