through a chance comment of how much this song meant to me i found out that this song was originaly commisioned as a advertising campain for insulating batts in the 70s, The message i would have to suppose to be more insulation the less power needed to be generated
Does anyone know if its possible to Kayak from Blue pools near Makarora to the Clutha's outlet on the coast.... obviously there are a couple of Hydro Dams to contend with.... but otherwise OK?
This trip takes about 4-7 days depending on your ability level and daily goals. The Makarora River has some willow hazards. Lake Wanaka is a one day paddle (if the wind is with you). The Clutha is all grade 2-3, with numerous willow hazards and snags. Upper reaches are swift. Dunstan reservoir is a long haul. Roxburgh reservoir is remote. Lower reaches have rock gardens (Beaumont and Rongahere Gorges). Dam controlled ramping means low flows in the am.. I've rafted this. Magic river. Do it!
I saw him recently. Bearded, dark glasses, collar turned up (in middle of summer too). Apparently he's turned into a reclusive and has become a painter of some note.
I remember this one back in NZ in the early 70's. Thanks for posting, think I heard John Hanlon went to Australia and was writing advertising jingles.
Thanks for your comment. You're right, I've read that John Hanlon went to Australia in the late 70's and runs his own advertising agency there. In 2002 he was working with Bruce Lynch and ZED on a double CD. He never really liked the spotlight himself. Damn the Dam was very popular around the time of the Manapouri lake raising issue. Shame there wasn't an equally popular song to help save the Cromwell Gorge, destroyed by the Clyde Dam during the bizarre 'think big' days of the late 80's.
Great pictures! Love the Fantail birds. The power companies are always problematic. They have done a lot of damage to the rivers in Oregon (with Bonneville and Grand Coule dam). I wish I was rich so I could help preserve your river.

is that river in the south island

Yes, it's the Clutha River in the South Island. The Cromwell Gorge was amazing, and the Clyde dam was an environmental disaster, to say the least!
