If the feds really wanted to rebuild the stocks they would raise the commercial size from 14, and stop netting them year round. Why do we have a short season with a 18 size limit when the netters can net 14 inch fish almost year round? That makes no sense.
I am 13 and went fluke fishing today. In total, me and my father caught 24 fish. How many we kept: 2. This is crazy is the law was only 16 inches, we would have at least 14.
in my experience i caught many more 16 to 18 than 18 to 20 inch fluke and by waiting who said that will chage, that may verry well be the genetic factor of the fish. And whats the thing of taking a 18 over a16 so obviously they agree to this factor and the lenth requirement wont change anytime soon?when will they be happy!!!!

the regs do more harm than good . most fluke returned die, there fore the regs should be 2 fish at 17 and 2 at maybe 20 this way less fluke get wasted and we get to go home with fish
Every June, a few of my coworkers charter a boat at the atlantic highlands to fish for fluke. My past three trips included nothing but throwing back fluke. I am not going this year. I could do something better with my 50 dollars and 6 hours.
Honestly i don't understand how these guys could question the people with degrees in marine sciences. Whats the point in destroying a fishery that you love? Anyway these people that are setting the regulations, are people who love to fish. Fishing is what draws most of the people into marine biology so they are just like every other recreational fishermen.
@shaller77 The marine biologists with the best reputations say that the population levels are 4-10 times higher than there has ever been recorded. Govt just wants to raise money with licenses, permits and fines to pay for their pensions.
the ultimate goal of all these tree huggers is for no fishing,no hunting and no access to any fishing or hunting! just ask the a audobon society member.paticularly on the east coast!
Actually, this year in atlantic highlands is going to be a good year because almost every Fluke caught at the harbor pier over there had to be tossed back in the water and that might mean that bigger Flounder or Fluke will come.
holy crap east coast! your ocean enviornment is absolutely wrecked! On the westcoast we rarely fish for flounder (which have nosize limit) because we haven't destroyed our cod and salmon populations. Suck it up and deal with the extra inch or two restrictions; too man fisheries have collapsed over there.
@RichUncleOyster Hehe, did you know salmon fishing was closed in California due to historically low returns? Did you know that strict rockcod and lingcod restrictions were made due to those fisheries collapsing in the last decade? West coast screwed our fisheries quite badly too...
I live in Atlantic Highlands and the pier over there has very good flounder fishing!! And the best crabbing! I probably bring home at least 20 crabs every 3 days or so!
There should be some restrictions, but there should be X amount of slot fish allowable per boat/fisherman. The 21.5" limit in NY is absolutely absurd. One of the major problems with these studies is the people in charge of the studies don't know a thing about fishing, or where fish congregate at particular times of the year. They'll design their sampling surveys so that a "random" sample is taken, but they're sampling in places where there are NO fish, so they conclude that stocks are low.
My opinion is the commercial netters should take a cut in quota size, jack up the price of Flounder about 1buck per pound, and make a slot limit for recreational. If I spend 200 dollars to bring my mom and daughter on a party boat,I should be nearly guaranteed dinner!.Allow 3 fish between 15 and 18 inches, and 2 over 18. Five decent Fluke is enough to feed a family of 4 or more.....By the way,got me a 7 pound Fluke 3 days ago! Pool Winner!
@njmudpuppy congratulations on your catch and I really do agree with you! Also, if you know a harbor or a pier or a spot where you can fish from with your boat, then go and fish for flounder there. I mean, why spend like almost yourwhole wallet to come and try to fish for 18 inches of Fluke when you can go to a very good pier or spot?
wow that sucks for those mates. i work on a party boat outta captree in ny, and it sucks when u gotta measure every fish, we only have to when the DEC guys r on the boat. u guys better get tipped good lol
Message to Lee Crockett: You really don't know what you are talking about Lee. I have been fishing for summer flounder for over 40 years. There were not many summer flounder in the sixties at all. Summer Flounder started to increase in numbers in the 1970s....before restrictions....and have continued to increase in numbers. You should not have a voice if you offer misinformation.

@shaller77 We question them because they ADMITTED that their sea bass numbers were way off, and they closed our season early for no good reason.
