"When I sing, I don't want them to see that my face is black. I don't want them to see that my face is white. I want them to see my soul. And that is colorless." -- Marian Anderson
She recorded this work three times. She first performed it with Dr. Bruno Walter and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, learning the music a few days before the first rehearsal. At the second rehearsal she had no need for the music, she had completely learned it at that point. This information is from Allan Keilor's biography of Anderson.
J'ignorais qu'elle avait chanté cette magnifique rapsodie !!!! Magnifique Marian ANDERSON....je suis bouleversée chaque fois que je l'entends !!! Merci ******
I still have this album . I first remember hearing it when I was about 3 yrs old. The dignity of Brahms ,sung by one of the most dignifyed wonderfull voices of the 20th centuary
Thank you again, jolicrasseux, for this great rendition of Marian Anderson's voice and art.. As I listen to and hum this, the choral parts are coming back to me - the bass parts, anyway, (I did this in the early '90's)although I'd have to buy the piece to sing it with the German again. Lovely! I never saw Marian Anderson in person, but that picture we have of her hanging in our bedroom is a daily reminder of this great diva who finally got a chance to sing at the Met.
God looks on the heart and not on the face...And Marian is certainly beautiful, and she could not hide that beauty even if the world judged her with that black skin and set her differently from the white-skinned racial bigots who only appeared inferior when they heard her angelic voice. And shame to the daughters of the American Revolution for refusing her to sing in their turf.Marian is remembered and enshrined in many people's heart... and the DAR-forgotten in utter oblivion.
not on the face??? ok i agree she certainly wasnt pretty but god blessed her with her voice and she used it to enable other black people to be able to sing.
Wonderful Marian Anderson, I had heard her name of course, but never actually heard her. Thanks a million, a revelation. Did she sing Brahm's Four Serious Songs? I can't imagine she could have missed them, they would be perfect. Hopefully she recorded them too. Thanks thanks thanks
Perhaps you know them with the German Title Vier Ernste Gesange, Brahms op 121, four songs with biblical texts, I have them uploaded on my page with the other great contralto Kathleen Ferrier, they are made for such a voice as Marian Anderson's, or else for a bass voice. Maybe she never recorded them.
This is truly wonderful. Can't decide if I prefer Marian's or Kathleen Ferrier's interpretations. Thankfully, it's possible to enjoy both. M.A. and K.F. were special ladies, both widely loved by the musical public.
Marian Anderson donna un récital à Montréal il y a plusieurs années. C'était divin! Une artiste d'une grande simplicité, mais s'exprimant avec une intensité et une intériorité peu communes.
Wonderful music. Wonderful person. A humbling and uplifting experience to know something of her life and to listen to her - either singing or speaking.
jolicrasseux, and all, thankyou for that. May I just tell the YouTube readers that my favourite clip on the Penn. site is "Marian Anderson discussing Mahatma Gandi and performing "Lead Kindly Light" in Old Delhi, India". In my very personal opinion, the inherent, natural goodness, and sincerity of the lady is captured in that one clip.
Many thanks, Ecosse99, I got all the pictures from Penn. University and Mrs. Nancy Shawcross accepted my uploading on Youtube. It's the main site for those who love Marian Anderson !
Thank you for posting this. We all know about miss Anderson from the history books, but hearing her sing the alto rhapsody with a great conductor and orchestra while in her prime is a real treat. I now hear why Toscanini considered her the greatest singer in the world. I'd love it if you could also post the Mon Coeur aria from Samson and Delilah. It's my favorite alto aria.
Excellent performance of the Rhapsody for alto. Was it Toscanini who said she was The Century's Voice?
