@avenueyay I think it has to do with a play on words, the guy going "huh?" thinks he heard that Candide "reduced to buggery", which is british slang for gay sex. I guess a lot of brits were in the audience, took me a while to figure it out.

they kissed behind a screen, not through. plus, its an adaptation of the book, who gives a shit about such small details. even the more significant differences can be excused as artistic license. bernstein did a hell of a job.
