Are you sure that OPTICAL zoom sequence went to 300?
I thought that zoom was way too smooth. Usually it starts smoothly but in order to get to 300 it begins in optical and then goes into DIGITAL zoom which suddenly/abruptly jumps into an ultra zoom i.e. 300mm ?
@eissa37 that's nothing to do with the camera, youve either got a dodgy or fake card - i suggest buying a samsung memory caRD FROM AMAZON as most ebay ones are fake.
@rawiswar1995 I'm gonna say yes. I've a TZ7 and I'm trying to find an upgrade. The TZ10 is good in that it has a manual mode but its jerky on video mode. The same problem exsists with the TZ18 and TZ20. Panasonic obviously thought it was better to improve the focus over the image stability. I prefer image stability so I prefer the TZ7. However, if focus is more important (although if you watch my vids you wont see an issue) then maybe the TZ10 is a better option for you.
@rawiswar1995 The TZ8 is another very similar offering to the TZ7. What camera magazine gave the TZ7 a 90% score and the TZ8 got an 89%. However, if the TZ8 has the TZ10 video issues then I stand by my word on the TZ7 being the better option despite the lack of a manual mode which I really wish it had and would have completed the camera. What camera magazine even mentioned it would have gotten a higher score if it had it.
i have lumixzs5 and i am not able to upload videos to you tube because they are in qick time format .... what can i do to be able to upload them ? tanks
Thanks for this review. It helped me so much! I'm a tech-savvy Realtor and my main camera needs are as follows: 1. Easy, yet feature rich should I want to get creative 2. 25mm wide angle lens 3. Min 10x optic zoom w/ability to zoom video 4. Image stabilization 5. Mac Compatibility 6. SD** memory I narrowed it down and compared it to: Nikon Coolpix 8100 Sony Dsc-HX5v Fuji Finepix F300EXR Canon PowerShot SX210 IS The Lumix won. I love it! Perfect camera for me & shoots great video! No regrets!
Video mode is absolutely amazing but you can hear the zoom in a recorded video. I mean I was expecting a lot more from this camera because I've heard that so many great reviews. I was only expecting a scroll wheel to be bad (I saw a video complaint about it), but it's actually nothing wrong with a scroll wheel. You can take a look at the video quality in my channel.
I've got this one and my friend has got SX200IS. I bought this Lumix mainly because I already have dslr and wanted to have a smaller camera as well.
Me and my friend were shooting same stuff.
I think Lumix has less vivid photos. And SX200IS has more functions. If I had to choose again, I'd probably choose SX200IS. Lumix is easier to use but in my opinion doesn't have that many useful auto functions. But that's just my amateur opinion.
hi gordon! i recently bought this camera and love it! i only have one problem. when i record a video i can't seem to understand how i can edit the video and upload it to youtube! The software is a bit confusing for me and i find it quiet difficult compared to windows movie maker! Plus how do i know if the recording is the right format for youtube? any suggestions?
Gordon, eh ? Used to read his stuff in Comp mags, and they were always interesting. And he's excellent at this too. More reviews from you Gordon, please.
Hi Gordon. Love the videos, keep up the good work! I was wondering if you could answer a quick question about SDHC cards. Do you know if Class 10 cards work on the TZ7 or just up to Class 6? Also is there any real difference in speed? I go to concerts and record quite a lot. Thanks
@MrSarcasticFantastic Yopu'd really need to ask Panasonic, but I *think* a class 10 will work fine in this camera, but you won't see any speed benefit on this model over a CLass 6.
But to answer your question, at the shop the seller recommended a sandisc ultra 8gb class 4 sdhc card, and works perfecly in avchd finest quality mode. So class 6 must be working of course!
@cameralabs , hi, which camera would u recommend between Canon PowerShot SX200 IS and Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7. my first priority is the image quality and as i live in Scotland we don't get many sunny days so in such lightings as well.i would really appreciate if u get back to me. thanks.
@kookie400 Yes I would like to know this too. Did you find a good camera for a gig with good audi?. I am in the market for a camera with good audio and at least 7-8 optical zoom preferably 10-12.
How do you get the videos onto your camera? I couldn't get it with any of my normal programs and I followed the manual. It said to take it into photofun, the thing that comes with the camera. I chose the Acquire button. It did not work and I've tried it in several of my other video editing programs such as Ulead Video Studio and multiple adobe programs. Please help me out!
I was looking for a camcorder with optical zoom around 200€ to make videos in 1280*720 and possibly photographs, I only found the Toshiba H30, but it looks like this Panasonic hybrid is a perfect match for me.
@NiteAngel You mean the TZ10? That's the replacement for this one. I reviewed it ages ago at cameralabs . com, as well as the SOny HX5 and Canon SX210 IS. Remember only a fraction of my reviews end up here on YT.
@cameralabs The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS7 is an automatic point-&-shoot camera that's perfect for beginner and dedicated photographers. A 12x optical zoom LEICA DC Lens offers spectacular images spanning 25mm to 300mm this is Panasonic new camera with GPS Google it
@NiteAngel I don't need to google it, I've reviewed it! The new version of the camera is called the ZS7 in North America and the TZ10 everywhere else. Please see my review of it at cameralabs . com.
@cameralabs yep their is your review, but see what happens when you dont do a youtube review, you get guys like me bugging you, well I click though your site, and got it 327$ no shipping or tax, hey maybe I'do a review for you, geared more to the real life experience, like zooming in on good looking women, then see how the camera preforms, since I know little more.
@cameralabs if this is only a fraction you must be one buddy guy because every time i go to research a camera i always find that you made a video on it! thanks so much your videos helped me get into photography!
I just got this camera and got a 16GB card too. When I record in HD it starts to count down from 8min 20 sec. How Can I make it record a longer video? The booklet said it should record up to 1 hr and 7 min in HD setting. If someone could help I would greatly appreciate it.
@peter1miler Sounds like you need a faster card. To support AVCHD Lite, you'll need to use a memory card rated as Class 4 or quicker, while to support Motion JPEG, you'll need Class 6 or faster.
@cameralabs Thanks for the help, I have the Transcend 16gb card. I will look into getting a new card. Thanks again, this video helped me a lot when I was looking for a new camera.
@peter1miler You're welcome Peter - don't forget to check out my fullr eviews at cameralabs . com and if you'd like to support me, please consider shopping through our partner stores page at cameralabs . com (for anything!)
Bought this camera about 2 weeks ago and delighted with it, just the lense motor is a bit noisey when filming. AVCHD is great on PS3 and watching on pc using media player classic, the software for converting I found not easy to use and was wondering is there any other programmes out there for converting AVCHD? Thanks
could anyone help me? i have taken many videos with this camera and can't seem to transfer them onto my laptop. i've tried using the usb port directly into the camera, and a card reader, and while both show photos, neither shows the videos. i can't find any help with this online or anyone else with the same problem, so any tips would be great!
@ewyousmellbad After you've selected the memory card's drive on your computer, go to PRIVATE-->AVCHD-->BDMV--->then STREAM. Your video files should be there. Alternatively, you can use the Photofun Studio software that comes with the camera to can acquire videos/photos, and it actually saves all your photos/videos in one folder (organized by date). Hope that helps!
Thank you as someone who knows little I found this useful, I was thinking of getting the new sony HX5 but dont want to pay that much or need gps, this camer will also work with my Panasonic tv.
Hi all im looking for some response from people with the panasonic lumix TZ7, you see i have just brought one and im a complete novice. When im recording in video mode if i zoom in on something or out, when you play it back to watch you can hear me zooming quite clearly? especially if, say its a quite room?. should it be like this. cheers.

@davethestalker Sorry, I meant to say I've described the differences between the ZS5 and ZS7 in my ZS7 review at cameralabs - check the verdict page. And as I said, the SX210 IS review will be in the future. Not here but on my website.
Our stores in the states, such ad Best Buy, have the ZS5. I have to assume it's the same as the ZS7, except with a 12 megapixel? I can buy the ZS5, I would have order the ZS7 from Amazon.
Have you reviewed the Canon SX210is yet? It is available in my local stores for the same price as Amazon,
@davethestalker There's more differecnes - check out my TZ7 / ZS3 review at cameralabs . com to find out what's different. I'll be doing the SX210 IS in the future, but again, it's on the website, not here on YT. All my reviews are there.
What the camera really does is to make things a lot far away of what they really are (when it is on 1x) and then when you zoom in up to 12 x you can only get as close as you would normally see with your own eyes without any camera. I don't know if i made myself clear. What a big dissapointment about that.
I just bought the Lumix ZS3/TZ7 and i have a complain. My major interest was the HD video and the 12x zoom (i have nothing to say about the photograps, they're amazing quality) but the big zoom you can watch in videos here on YT is no such thing.
@davethestalker The 2010 model is called the TZ10 / ZS7 and includes built-in GPS! I have already done full reviews of it and the equivalent Sony, the HX5, at cameralabs . com - check them out!
I'n my opinion, this camera is fatter, however it includes GPS so it names the country and city you are in as you take photos while improved zoom and 12MP.
If you want a smaller camera and with great qaulity pictures and HD movies go for the TZ7, the TZ10 has improved features also.
This is a fabulous camera. It's very easy to use and I've taken some great still pictures and HD video with it even though I'm certainly no expert camera person! The newer TZ10 is even better with the new manual mode. Perhaps my biggest criticism of the TZ7 is the lack of manual controls (added in TZ10), the very short battery life and the rip off price of buying a backup Panasonic battery.
I bought this the other day, and RMA'd it the same day. Why - Zoom Noise!
Incredible zoom noise occurs when zooming during video recording.
Sorry, but in a quite room, where all you hear is the ambiance, refridgerator noise, laptop fan, etc., and then, "click click click click... motor hummm stop." Zoom out "click, click click, motor humm stop."
Gordon, please review the zoom noise on the new ZS7. Thanks.
I have this cam bought in Melbourne. 1. I find the battery extremely not long lasting. Any comment on that? (i.e. if it could be faulty?)
2. How to get background blurred when take portraits. Of course I read about activating Macro. However, its not effective that much. Pls. advice. Thanks
I really like this camera, this might be a stupid question but does the megapixels affect the video, like does the kodak 30 frames mode is worse or better than this one?
@cameralabs I am waiting for ur video review of the tz10. i have just bought a tz7 based on ur review. i couldnt buy it through any of ur sponsors, since non of them shipped out of USA.
ki, i apreciate veri much your work and i have a litle dilema, what camera you think is best beatwin this panasonic tz7 and Canon IXUS 200 IS. I know what differnces are, but i'd like to know wich one are best for pictures quality.
Meanwhile Canon has the worst rep for build quality amongst the high-end brands. One user who had a bad camera isn't going to convince anyone. Heck, Canon has millions of build quality complaints and their cams still sell like hotcakes.
Quick question to all .... How do you download video to PC - Does it need to be in AVCHD or Motion JPEG and does it need to the video card on the back of the PC or can it be done through USB connection - I am aving trouble reading video from USB.. which is strange because doing this on an Olympus was simple..
I need to ask an expert this question...........Thats you Gordon!
Very short; How would you compare this camera to the panasonic 3 1/" ccd agdvc20p?
I am looking for a less grainy and somewhat washed look in my vids....the dvc 20p is supposedly a pro cam, but I see more clarity and true color in cams like yours here.
What do people think about the video quality? Is it good enough to show on a large screen HDTV? Also what is the best memory card to ensure good video quality? Thanks!
I have a TZ7. Video quality is suprisingly good in a 50" plasma. But, you cannot turn the OIS of during video, thus very smooth pans are required to stop the TZ7 locking on the background - ie to avoid panning stutter.
I have the Lumix ZS3 too. Can anybody tell me how to get rid of the blue lines that come from lights when you shoot videos at night? Or is just flaw in the camera?
I purchased the Lumix DMC-ZS3 and its just fantastic!!! Gr8 for concerts, i took an awesome pic of the moon the other night and was wicked, its just a gr8 camera, i have bought a few over the eyars and so far nothing compares to this little baby, I love it and tell everyone about it, its worth the money and just makes my life so gr8!!! Worth every cent if u want a gr8 camera :)
Sony H20 is bigger and heavier than ZS3 and its wide angle starts at 38mm (ZS3 is 25mm), even though its tele is 380mm (ZS3 is 300mm), I'm sure you'd use the ultrawide 25mm for group shots far more than 380mm ultrazoom. Olympus is the bottom class in dpreview's ultracompact zoom review.
I would go for ZS3. It's THE BEST ultracompact zoom out there. Period.
NP :) The important thing is that the camera is just a tool, whatever camera you have, you have to go out and shoot, not just read gazillions of reviews and endless pixel peeping like I do :P
I have ZX1, I haven't used the TZ7 but I think TZ7 is a better camera. TZ7 is a little bigger and heavier and it has a bigger, better lens but it offers a lot more; it has HD video, AVCHD video recording (compressed, smaller size), HDMI out, stereo output and it has 300mm (12x zoom) compared with 200mm (8x).
Also, the ZX1's aperture only has two steps; F3.3 & F10 on wide, F5.9 & F18 on tele angle, no steps in between! TZ5 also had that, TZ7 has iris aperture, more steps.
I'm so confused on which to get.. the Sony DSC H20, Panasonic ZS3, or SX200IS by Canon. The main purpose is for great amazing quality photos/ and video quality at concerts. I do not want a DSLR, so I've narrowed down my choices to these three. I am very picky also about the interface. The Panasonic offers poor themed interface. It looks like it's from the 1990's. I've also heard the Canon cannot use its full 12x optical zoom during filming? but the others can?
You are not going to get "great amazing quality photos" with ANY of the cams you mentioned or any other ultra-compact cam for that matter. You would at least need to bump up to the larger compacts that allow for interchangeable lens and offer larger sensors. As for video at concerts, I hope they are daylight concerts. $1200 consumer camcorders struggle in low light as do professional cams in many situations. A camera this small won't stand a chance in the dark.
I've had mine since the 30th of August and I love it, battery life is reasonable though indoor pictures without the flash aren't great but I've yet to figure out the best settings for that situation. I've got some videos shot on it, 1 was in AVCHD Lite at 25FPS and the rest in M-JPEG at 30FPS.
ZS3 Battery update, I guess there are third party batteries that WILL work with the V1.2 software. I ordered a battery from Hong Kong ($14.89 US) and just assumed I couldnt use the V1.2, so I flashed back to V1.1 I just happened to be looking on Ebay and saw a ZS3 battery. I recognized the package as the same battery that I bought and it is advertized as being compatible with all versions so I flashed up to V1.2 and my thirt party battery indeed worked with V1.2
One issue people talk about is the no third party battery thing with the 1.2 version software. Thats an easy one, just flash back to 1.1 version software. It takes about 2 seconds, then you can use any third party battery.
no now im sure, you better of done the luge track while your up there

hello, what would you suggest between a Canon SX130 and Lumix SZ3?
these are the options that are affordable to me right now, with good zoom (which I need)
Right now I have a Canon S2 IS, but it has a known battery charge recognition problem that will cost, to fix, half the price of a new camera.
The prices I found are R$550 (U$343) for the Lumix SZ3 and R$450 (U$281) for the Canon SX130.
Should I spend a little more with the Lumix?

@cameralabs yep their is your review, but see what happens when you dont do a youtube review, you get guys like me bugging you, well I click though your site, and got it 327$ no shipping or tax, hey maybe I'do a review for you, geared more to the real life experience, like zooming in on good looking women, then see how the camera preforms, since I know little more.

I just got this camera and got a 16GB card too. When I record in HD it starts to count down from 8min 20 sec. How Can I make it record a longer video? The booklet said it should record up to 1 hr and 7 min in HD setting. If someone could help I would greatly appreciate it.
peter1miler 1 year ago
@peter1miler Sounds like you need a faster card. To support AVCHD Lite, you'll need to use a memory card rated as Class 4 or quicker, while to support Motion JPEG, you'll need Class 6 or faster.

@cameralabs Thanks for the help, I have the Transcend 16gb card. I will look into getting a new card. Thanks again, this video helped me a lot when I was looking for a new camera.

Bought this camera about 2 weeks ago and delighted with it, just the lense motor is a bit noisey when filming. AVCHD is great on PS3 and watching on pc using media player classic, the software for converting I found not easy to use and was wondering is there any other programmes out there for converting AVCHD? Thanks

could anyone help me? i have taken many videos with this camera and can't seem to transfer them onto my laptop. i've tried using the usb port directly into the camera, and a card reader, and while both show photos, neither shows the videos. i can't find any help with this online or anyone else with the same problem, so any tips would be great!
ewyousmellbad 1 year ago
@ewyousmellbad After you've selected the memory card's drive on your computer, go to PRIVATE-->AVCHD-->BDMV--->then STREAM. Your video files should be there. Alternatively, you can use the Photofun Studio software that comes with the camera to can acquire videos/photos, and it actually saves all your photos/videos in one folder (organized by date). Hope that helps!

davethestalker 1 year ago
I was asking about the ZS5, not the 3. The 3 is last year's model.
I did look for the SX210si on the site's review kist and did nit see it. The SX200si is though.
I'm about to walk out the door and go buy one of them.
davethestalker 1 year ago
@davethestalker Sorry, I meant to say I've described the differences between the ZS5 and ZS7 in my ZS7 review at cameralabs - check the verdict page. And as I said, the SX210 IS review will be in the future. Not here but on my website.
cameralabs 1 year ago
Our stores in the states, such ad Best Buy, have the ZS5. I have to assume it's the same as the ZS7, except with a 12 megapixel? I can buy the ZS5, I would have order the ZS7 from Amazon.
Have you reviewed the Canon SX210is yet? It is available in my local stores for the same price as Amazon,
davethestalker 1 year ago
@davethestalker There's more differecnes - check out my TZ7 / ZS3 review at cameralabs . com to find out what's different. I'll be doing the SX210 IS in the future, but again, it's on the website, not here on YT. All my reviews are there.
cameralabs 1 year ago
What the camera really does is to make things a lot far away of what they really are (when it is on 1x) and then when you zoom in up to 12 x you can only get as close as you would normally see with your own eyes without any camera. I don't know if i made myself clear. What a big dissapointment about that.
aleynad26B 1 year ago
I just bought the Lumix ZS3/TZ7 and i have a complain. My major interest was the HD video and the 12x zoom (i have nothing to say about the photograps, they're amazing quality) but the big zoom you can watch in videos here on YT is no such thing.

What is the 2010 model of this camera?
This is yet another case of Panasonic having a better product than Sony without Sony's bloated pricing.
I was considering the Sony W370.

HardDiscount 1 year ago
I'n my opinion, this camera is fatter, however it includes GPS so it names the country and city you are in as you take photos while improved zoom and 12MP.
If you want a smaller camera and with great qaulity pictures and HD movies go for the TZ7, the TZ10 has improved features also.
harrihealey02 1 year ago
what mega pixel is it ?
tommyaw123 1 year ago
This is a fabulous camera. It's very easy to use and I've taken some great still pictures and HD video with it even though I'm certainly no expert camera person! The newer TZ10 is even better with the new manual mode. Perhaps my biggest criticism of the TZ7 is the lack of manual controls (added in TZ10), the very short battery life and the rip off price of buying a backup Panasonic battery.

I was also shocked by the very noticeable zooming noise. How come this wasn't covered in any review?
Finnquirer 1 year ago

Pls. advice. Thanks
umbass100 1 year ago
About blured background, check google for "understanding depth of field". Compact cameras are not suitable for that.
However, there are few steps you need to do :
1. Focus on the eyes
2. Zoom in to the subject as much as you can (about 100 mm feel best for me)
3. Stand as close to the subject as possible (this can be still far away depending on your zoom)
4. Use as low F-stop as possible (shoot with lens wide-open). If nose or ears are blury and eyes are still sharp, use higher F-stop

Meanwhile Canon has the worst rep for build quality amongst the high-end brands. One user who had a bad camera isn't going to convince anyone. Heck, Canon has millions of build quality complaints and their cams still sell like hotcakes.

Quick question to all .... How do you download video to PC - Does it need to be in AVCHD or Motion JPEG and does it need to the video card on the back of the PC or can it be done through USB connection - I am aving trouble reading video from USB.. which is strange because doing this on an Olympus was simple..
nickhawkes 2 years ago
USB is too slow for me. Just pop the SD card into a card reader, and drill down in the the BDMV/PRIVATE/STREAMS/ to find your .mts AVCHD H264 files.
Don't use MJPEG.

Hi Gordon,
What would be the best settings to have when shooting AVCHD video at a concert for example?
I read your review and you said turning Continuous-AF off would help avoid the 'searching' of the autofocus.
I'm just concerned with shooting video at concerts, so any help/tips would be very helpful!
Thanks.

Thanks, and cheers;
Tim.

What do people think about the video quality? Is it good enough to show on a large screen HDTV? Also what is the best memory card to ensure good video quality? Thanks!
AliLeigh25 2 years ago
I have a TZ7. Video quality is suprisingly good in a 50" plasma. But, you cannot turn the OIS of during video, thus very smooth pans are required to stop the TZ7 locking on the background - ie to avoid panning stutter.

Worth every cent if u want a gr8 camera :)

pls help me. i cannot decide which to choose from these cameras: Sony DSC-H20, Panasonic Lumix ZS3, or Olympus Stylus 9000.
SHINeeist22 2 years ago
@SHINeeist22
Period.
optimistsRUS 2 years ago
thanks:)
SHINeeist22 2 years ago
NP :) The important thing is that the camera is just a tool, whatever camera you have, you have to go out and shoot, not just read gazillions of reviews and endless pixel peeping like I do :P
optimistsRUS 2 years ago
which is best: TZ7 or the ZX1?? pls answer
caiocrz 2 years ago
@caiocrz

Rwa2aNBoY 2 years ago
I'm so confused on which to get.. the Sony DSC H20, Panasonic ZS3, or SX200IS by Canon. The main purpose is for great amazing quality photos/ and video quality at concerts. I do not want a DSLR, so I've narrowed down my choices to these three. I am very picky also about the interface. The Panasonic offers poor themed interface. It looks like it's from the 1990's. I've also heard the Canon cannot use its full 12x optical zoom during filming? but the others can?
subarianEra 2 years ago

I've got some videos shot on it, 1 was in AVCHD Lite at 25FPS and the rest in M-JPEG at 30FPS.

noformstyle 2 years ago
ZS3 Battery update, I guess there are third party batteries that WILL work with the V1.2 software. I ordered a battery from Hong Kong ($14.89 US) and just assumed I couldnt use the V1.2, so I flashed back to V1.1 I just happened to be looking on Ebay and saw a ZS3 battery. I recognized the package as the same battery that I bought and it is advertized as being compatible with all versions so I flashed up to V1.2 and my thirt party battery indeed worked with V1.2
therealdarcman 2 years ago
Link please?
Rentsthroughtheroof 2 years ago
One issue people talk about is the no third party battery thing with the 1.2 version software. Thats an easy one, just flash back to 1.1 version software. It takes about 2 seconds, then you can use any third party battery.
