There was no reason for Vaan and Penelo and they complicated and distracted from the narrative. There's a grand story going on about war between two nations and history and politics and magic evil overlords and vengeful princesses, which gets smashed and covered over by Vaan killing (and then probably eating, let's be honest here) rats in the sewer and doing gruntwork.

well if you think about it there is no blaming them, you do all that hard work, all of those boss battles (that seymore is a pain in the ass) and you get an ending like that. i'm not saying there is anything wrong with the ending but normaly people like the main character to not die at the end. beacause people didn't like FFX very much, square enix decided to make FFX-2 so without FFX being the worst rated final fantasy game, we wouldn't have gotten FFX-2

Due to that SE released the short video of Rikku giving Yuna a sphere of who seemed to be Tidus, SE did this to give something to those fans who wanted more. However, this video made people go crazy and want even more yet, thus X-2 was created. Also, FFX definately wasn't the worst rated FF. You know... it's not a good habit to blatently lie. FFX is epic, and has an epic-shocking ending.
