Saul Bass titles North by Northwest

Legendary designer Saul Bass created the "kinetic typography" for the main title of this film; it and the extraordinary fandango by the great Bernard Herrmann fit each other -- and the picture -- like a hand in a form-fitting glove.

Composer David Raksin ("Laura," 1944) once said that while most composers for the cinema would score a film in typical symphonic fashion, "Bernie would smite the world with trombones." Indeed.
