Jerry has a style that trey cant imitate and different times different styles, jerry didnt use many chords although trey does, jerry could get jazzy but wasnt a jazz guitarist but trey is although he can play about anything and trey is amazing but he lacks the soul of jerry.
As far as icons go, yes Jerry surpases Trey, but when it comes to playing, I'm sorry but Jerry couldnt even think of peaking as intensley or smoothly as Trey. I love the Dead and Jerry, but come on, let's not get ahead of ourselves

Yeah definitely not. Trey is great at jamming but he doesn't come close to the talent that Jerry had since the 60's. Phil lesh definitely goes great with phish though.
I saw both bands extensively, and I completely disagree. Trey Anastasio was the more talented player top to bottom, hands down. Only thing Jerry had on Trey was his voice. Trey was far more versatile, textural, had far better overall command of the instrument. Nobody touches 92-00 Trey. Dont let your personal preference cloud your judgment.
