  • 1 person has never seen the sun.

  • Dude,Dan s flourishes look awesome even in night when you cant see anything.

  • Hey Allan its me again. Just wanted to ask one more question. While shooting in street situations like this do you do light setup its just the sunlight and you are just shooting from correct angle? Especially i want to know how you did it at that night part because there is no noise in the footage. Or you used strong backlight? However first I thought was that you just shot it around 7-8 pm and then just darkened your shoot at the editing process. Am I right?

    motion&emotion,

    -Sur.

  • song name please?

  • @asu2909 Seriously? It's in the credits at the end of the video..

  • @CardMagician sorry,i was focused on flourishes

  • Yo, allan. I know you use final cut, but have you heard about Final Cut X or something? It apparently has all of the features of FCP, but you don't have to download and install all sorts of stuff... It's being released in june, and it's going to be like $300.

  • @magicdad10 I've heard all about Final Cut X. I'm very excited to see what Apple comes up with and what happens to the rest of the applications in the Final Cut Studio suite.

  • @CardMagician Speaking of Final cut studio, what is it? Is it the level up from pro? Or one down... Thanks!

    Casey

  • @magicdad10 It is the same. The only way to get Final Cut Pro is to get Final Cut Studio, which is a post production suite containing a lot of software that should basically be sufficient for post-production on a professional-level project, from organizing to editing to compositing/sound post, color grading and mastering/DVD authoring.

  • Truly amazing.

  • 0:54. He look like superman (his muscle)

  • Do you use AE to edit.

    -Sur.

  • @saintsuro I don't, as AE isn't editing software. It's compositing/VFX software, and thus, not very suitable for editing. I personally use Final Cut Pro. A lot of my friends use Avid.

    It's a taste thing.

  • @CardMagician Thanks for replying, What about premiere pro? As I know final cut is for Macs. I was using Sony Vegas but now I want to use more professional programs.

    Thanks,

    -Sur.

  • @saintsuro I don't consider Premiere Pro a "professional" program. It always comes down to Final Cut and Avid. Avid runs on PCs - but in the end, Macs are the optimal platform for working with video/film editing.

  • @CardMagician But is it good for editing?

  • @saintsuro Premiere Pro? I don't like it at all. Don't ask me - I'll be biased towards Final Cut either way, since it's kind of what I "grew up" with.

I'm not an editor after all.

  • @CardMagician OK, Anyways thanks a lot.

    -Sur.

  • @saintsuro My pleasure! My best tip to you would be to obtain trial versions of a lot of different editing programs. Find a friend with a Mac and try Final Cut, or just go to an Apple store. Try it out. Go for what you end up liking best. :)

I went with Final Cut because it was the new industry standard when I learned how to edit. It was the program you'd wanna know in the business. I tried it out, and fell in love with it.

  • @CardMagician Thanks for the tip, also do you know a free site where can I learn some film making techniques?

  • @saintsuro Not really - most of film making you can't learn from a book, or a class, or a site. It's all about learning by doing. Watch a lot of good film, get inspired, and then go out and make something yourself. It is honestly how I did it, and how a lot of truly great film makers did it.

  • @CardMagician Thanks for the help one more time, I will try to do the best in my next video and I will share it with you.

    -Sur.

  • The most beautiful part of this video is the ending. "Artist Dan Buck", to outsiders we are just people playing with cards, but this is ART. Those in the Cardistry community, we are artists. We are ARTISTS

  • hey, what's the flourish Dan does at 0.37? :) been trying to find that for awhile.

    Cheers

  • @danielkhoo35 you are probably looking at LePaul's Spread

  • @AnzJammin no mate, after the le paul spread. :/

  • @danielkhoo35 it's not really a solid cut, it more of a freestyle, but the main part of the cut is not published so you will have to work it out.

  • @danielkhoo35 this is the Twisty McVeigh but with another ending, this flourish actually created by Kevin Ho and it didn't published.

  • I watch this two or three times every day

  • I keep watching this video over and over, mostly because of Dan's kickflip closer and that amazing song.

  • Dan is wedge!!!!!! Lol

  • Awesome.. I can't believe 1 Dislike WTF???

  • Do you know if Dan's already got a name for this flourish of his?

    cheers,

    Caspar

PS: Beautiful work, you're pushing your own standards with every new video.

  • Allan,

I really like the warm effect you put during Dawn. Could you please tell me a summary(process) on what you did? Thanks!

  • @calmakris It's very hard to describe exactly what I did. I made the colors warmer. I added a red and yellow hue. I played with the luma curves until the contrast looked sharper and nicer. I saturated it. There's not much more to it - you just have to play around with it until it looks good.

  • This video is elegant!

    -Luis Duran

  • fantastic.

  • amazing !!

  • PURE ART!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Maybe the only video with Dan where he is not doing Pandora.

    -Sur.

  • The cards, moves, and video are purely beautiful!!! Nice work.

  • wow Allan that`s a favourite, man having one like you in the cardistry world is so awesome!... that equipment is a dream for many

    P.S. Dan rocks!

  • Just wondering, was the footage that was shot in the night grainy?

If so, how did you manage to reduce the noise? :P

  • @PopoRanger The footage wasn't very grainy. It was a lot brighter than it ended up in the video. Lowering the shadow/black levels to gain contrast during color grading reduced some of the grain that was there.

  • Beautiful. What software do you use to edit the video?

  • @magicfreebies Hey! It was cut in Final Cut Pro.

  • Wow. Miss you

  • Oh yeah Lens and Camera ?

  • @nastydodger 7D - Zeiss 50mm ƒ/1.4, Zeiss 85mm ƒ/1.4, Sigma 10mm ƒ/2.8.

  • @CardMagician I didn't know we were zeiss buddies! 50 1.4 to rule them all

  • @CardMagician OMG Allan, I hate you for having those lenses. XD

  • @lianpalima It's really not that much about the camera or the lenses. They're just tools after all. I bet I could make the same video with cheap kit lenses and a cheaper camera. I prefer to use proper tools though - they make the job so much easier!

  • @CardMagician Yes, I agree that it's not the camera/lenses but the cameraman but you said, "I bet I could make the same video with cheap kit lenses". Well, I bet you can't get a bright enough shot of the dawn with a 3.5-5.6 kit lens. :)

  • @lianpalima The "dawn" shots were shot at ƒ/4-ƒ/8, as they weren't during dawn, but in the middle of the day. The "dusk" shots at Griffith Observatory however were all shot wide open at 1.4, but I could easily have boosted the sensor and gotten a decent image at ƒ/3.5!

  • @CardMagician oh yea, I was talking about the "dusk" shots not the "dawn", my bad. But still, ƒ1.4 is not even close to ƒ/3.5.

  • @lianpalima Haha, I know! It would never be the same. You should at least have one fast prime. I love fast primes - they're the only lenses I use, pretty much.

  • sexy !

  • So much style!

  • Absolutely brilliant.

  • Where r u, Dave?

  • I want to see Pandora T_T

  • Awesome :D

  • this is pretty neat. Nice job Allan.

  • Wow. I'm speechless. The music, flow, cinematography, and amazing flourishes all combine into a wave of awesomeness. Simply stunning is all I have to say. These are the types of videos that inspire me to work harder and become better at cardistry. Thank you.

  • Yo Dan !! give me a favor and make a tutorial for that skater cut lol

  • YouTube should add a repeat button specifically for this video

  • I screamed like a little girl when I saw this.

  • Now THIS is a video I like to see. Why can't all flourish videos be like this...

  • I just noticed that when i arrived at magic con, I had to get used to seeing all of my heroes in real life. Now, I have to get used to seeing them only on video again. LOL!

  • This is brilliant!

  • Truly beautiful video, I love it.

  • This is so inspiring, Allan.

Great flourishing by Dan. You know no limits!

    Henrik

  • Awesome job Allan, good piece of work! Same to u Dan, great flourishing... As usual ;)

    Cheers,

    Aron

  • Allan, you are f the most talented cinematographer I have ever seen, and I am proud to have met you at Magic Con. This video is up there with my other favorites from you such as Blackpool 2010 and Sunday Afternoon. Great work, and keep it up!

    Jack

  • Rocked it.

  • The rooftop shots have a slight Inception feel to them for some reason. Clever cinematography. This video reminds me why I got into flourishing in the first place. Thanks for that Hagen.

    -Michael Herp

  • Can't believe you all had to wait two days to see this. Hah. That being said, this is one of my favorite cardist videos EVER. And I've seen a few...

    Chris H.

  • @chsvee Thanks, Chris! =D

To be fair, I'm guessing it could be worse. Some videos never hit the public for years after being made. I just wanted to make sure that Dan liked it before I made it public!

  • This is a great video. Did you use a tripod for filming this? Looks like you didn't and yet you did an outstanding job on shooting and editing. As always!

And I love how Arms and Sleepers song adds nostalgic atmosphere to the video. By the way, they are going to give a live show in my city soon. I'm excited, whoah!

    Alex

  • @decemberboysUA Thanks!

I didn't use a tripod - but for some shots, I used a monopod. It helps a lot - but if you've ever used one, you'll know it's nothing like a tripod at all.

  • Awesome

  • @TheCuso Thanks!

Someone told me that this thing wasn't the ONLY thing that was being filmed at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. ;)

  • I think this is the best combination possible , Allan filming and Dan doing flourishes.

  • truly beautiful. The cardistry is amazing as always when dealing with the bucks, although this one showed some very smooth rotations and new idea's that i loved but the concept and rhythm between dusk and dawn were really nice. Overall another classic from Mr. Hagen. Well done

  • Skater cut ending was pretty cool

  • sweet

  • Dan & Dave is always coming up with something new which never fail to amaze. Also, their style is so different from everybody that is so significant! Thumbs up for the video!

  • That was freaking crazy.

I can't imagine what the cardistry community would be like without Allan Hagen. I think it would suck.

    Awesome Skater Cut ending!

  • @oliversogard Thanks a lot! Appreciate it! I doubt it would suck - but I like to think that people have gotten something out of my videos! =D

  • @CardMagician I have definitely got something out of your videos. Thank you.

On another note, i'm looking forward for my Papercuts copy to arrive. I'll let let you know how i like it, when it's here! :)

  • Comment removed

  • Glad this is finally public, I love it! Awesome job all-round. :)

  • ouch.

  • Brilliant, absolutley lovely video Allan!

    Josh

  • There are some interesting concepts here.

    -Miquel
