On this date in 1955 {Mar. 12th} "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" entered Billboard's Top 100; eventually it would peaked at #5 and spent 17 weeks in the Top 100.
Ranked 22nd on Billboard Year-End Hot 30 Singles of 1966 chart...
Fess Parker's original version was first featured in the Walt Disney mini-series "Davy Crockett"; and 1st performed on the first episode on December 15th, 1954...
Other charted versions in 1955; Bill Hayes {#1}, 'Tennessee' Ernie Ford {#5}, and Walter Schmann {#14}...
I wonder if Disney will mind my new lyrics for the tune. "Dexter Texter" may raise awareness about a serious safety problem, those who text while driving.
Born to be distracted as you can see.
Talked up a storm when he was only three.
Raised on the boob tube, watchin' comedy.
Made up his mind to live dangerously.
Dexter, Dexter Texter, texted his life away!
More can be seen at the gridlocksmith blog (Sorry, utube won't allow url's here.) Will Disney permit radio spots- this music + new words?
¡Ah, es igualita a la balada de "Pancho López"! Nomás que Pancho López sí era un hombre de tierras salvajes, pues a los diez años papá resultó y cosas así.
I grew up as a young man in the same area as Davy. Played in the grounds Davy did as a child and relived his legends along the Nolichuckey River and the cabin where he was born. Named my dog Davy Crockett in his honor.
Isn't there a last verse that goes something like "When the battle ended they were all cut low, but the truth of it is, that ain't so. Their spirits'll live and their legend'll grow, so long as we remember the Alamo?"
I wasn't aware that Fess Parker had died. May he rest in peace. This is such a great song from a great, classic film that my father introduced me to when i was a kid.
I am sure that you have already met the real Davy Crockett in Heaven, and that he is very, very, proud of you for bringing his legendary story to ‘life’ on the big screen in a way that is very accurate to history, itself.
If you're too stupid to know the difference between a folk song (which often blow things out of proportion and are not meant to be accurate) and reality then you're not even worth talking to.
@F14ace if you are gonna get all whiny and go pee-pee in your panties when i point out that the lyrics are fallacious, misleading, and historically inaccurate, then you shouldn't start name-calling .
@F14ace wow. what a great comeback. i am speechless. see, u aren't even defending the song anymore. that means that the song is lying and that you are stupid.
Thank you for a wonderful tribute to Fess Parker! In 1956 he completely changed my life with his Davy Crockett.I've been an avid fan ever since.Visiting with him in his home for days I can tell you that Fess was a wonderful, generous and very witty guy.Easy and laid back,Just like Davy Crockett.I'll miss him always.Again, thank for posting!

Mexicans did create a song with a very similar tune, about their Revolution: "Pancho, Pancho López, se fue a la revolución".

This was playing in Lou's Cafe in Back to the Future, while Marty was looking for a phone book and when he meets his teenage dad.
Lou: Hey, kid, you just jump ship?
Marty: What?
Lou: What's with the life preserver?
LOL
