1) When did CBS stop using that 'Special Presentation' graphic? If I remember correctly, it was being used as late as 1984 to 1986 - I have memories of seeing it used before the annual airing of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" on WJBK-TV in Detroit.
2) What is the Burger Chef/Burger King connection? I thought I read somewhere that BK bought out Burger Chef.
@Superbook4Eva The only real connection is that the founders of Burger Chef were a couplea guys who who hired to create a flame broiling machine for Burger King. After they built the machine they decided to use it for themselves and open their own burger place, and Burger Chef was born. The company was eventually was sold to the Hardee's chain, who still bring back the Super Chef sandwich every year or so.
@peteradaniel Just saw this clip while searchin You Tube for clips on the NYC blackout of 1977. Man, how right you are about the scary silences and newtork graphics in the mid to late seventies! I too, had numerous nightmares as a kid from the sounds and visuals alone. They are ubercool to me now, but the CBS Special Presentation spinning logo had me running behind the couch in fear of it landing in the livving room and raping me.
This does bring back memories of watching TV as a kid. I love old news clips. I do think that TV has gotten better. MUCH better...does anyone really want to see that 'special' they teased? ;-) Network news, however, has suffered greatly since then. It's very sad.
Why wonder what the special was? They said it on the commercial before the Burger Chef plug: "Yankee Doodle to Ragtime...coming up next!" (and if you still wanted your Bernadette Peters fix for the evening, you could watch her sing and dance in the special which pre-empted her show "All's Fair.").
Great Memories! I do remember when CBS-TV also went "BONG" at the top-of-the-Hour. At least CBS-Radio still goes "BONG" at :00 before the hourly newscast-- the Radio side of the Columbia Broadcasting System has been going "BONG" since 1938!
Morton Dean I heard of him in the 1990's at ABC News!

That Burger Chef commercial warrants it's own, stand-alone YouTube upload.

Any special that results in "Maude" being pre-empted can't be all bad.

Too many eerie silences and dead air back then. No wonder we hated watching the tub. I had a shit load of night mares from those awful graphics.

TheAndyinSeattle 1 year ago 6
@TheAndyinSeattle The Special Presentation was "They Said It With Music: Yankee Doodle to Ragtime."
I miss many things about the 70's, but a music variety special preempting scheduled programming isn't one of them!

aired, 7/4/77. We had our apt. windows in Queens wide open as the streets exploded with M80s.
