  • Such nostalgia, me and my sister loved this show as children.

  • Played it over and over and over and over and over and ...

  • Such incredible music

  • Just heard this on Classic FM and needed to find it on YouTube! Thank you! Always wanted the full version :)

  • katherine jenkins

  • I'm Christian and I love this song. Bet I won't get thumbs up like all the athiests seem to.

  • @Whirrednerd Lol. I gave you a thumbs up.

  • @Whirrednerd why would that matter?

  • I'm Church of Ireland and you can't better the Angican chorister tradition, particularly the English chorister tradition. Wonderfully renditioned.

  • The bible can be so beautifully poetic, particularly the King James Version. Some parts are easily on a par with Shakespeare. This hymn is a perfect example

  • I'm a Christian and I also love this song. HA!

  • I'm a complete Atheist but this is a BEAUTIFUL song.

  • how come this isn't in the original psalm 23? only in this one

  • I have watched the Vicar of Dibley- I liked Dawn French playing th part of the Vicar.

I really love this Psalm..We are learning how to sing it in our choir. zzzit is beautiful.an admirer from Australia

  • I adore this arrangement of the psalm. I enjoyed the Vicar of Dibley immensely and continue to listen to this piece long after I've finished the series.

  • Truly a piece of music to center ourselves !!!

  • Just beautiful.

  • You do not have to be religious to enjoy a fine work of art like this! :)

  • @susans1fan it feels much better though

  • Most beautiful sounding opening theme ever!

  • Beautiful tune! It goes straight to my heart!

    Thanks!

  • amazing piece so beatiful. :')

  • one of the funniest tv shows in history and with one the most talented ensemble casts in tv history, British television is a revelation and this show is one of many masterpieces to come out of England. And this song gets me every time because of the sadness I feel because I wish the song was true and I weep because it is not.

  • I loved watching this show, when I was a little kid I used to call it "The Fat Lady"... :P

  • I love this piece.

  • I hate religion but I like The Vicar Of Dibley. The people in the show aren't bible bashers there just normal people. It must be impossible to watch The Vicar Of Dibley and not laugh at it.

  • Bury me now. I'm in heaven.

  • @syzygy271

I know exactly how you feel, I'm atheist, but VoD made me at least respect religion haha and well it's humorous... plus this song is amazing!! O.O

  • we sang this in church choir;) and 1 more thing this boy can't sing like that anymore

  • its the best par of the program.

  • Footsoldier95 you shut up. You're hardly a Christian with your attitude. Stop ruining the song.

  • My sister always laughs at me when we watch this show. When I hear the song I start crying, then by the time the show comes on for about a minute I start laughing. At the end when it comes on again, I start crying, then Geraldine says a crazy joke and Alice doesn't get it and I laugh all over again. Such a beautiful song and hilarious show.

  • I think any music sang by a choir in this 'style' appeals to most people. Whether religiously themed or not!

  • As a Christian, it's impossible not to appreciate how beautiful this music is. Now lets see if I get a shit load of thumbs up like all the athiests do when they say this.

  • @Whirrednerd As always relegion is the route of all evil, even more so down to your stupid comments!

  • @bobbyjoe12s And athiesm is the route of all bad spelling and ignorance it seems. Its nice to see you dislike 'relegion' rather than religion.

  • @Whirrednerd You did not get it did you? The (e) is for EVIL! Hope all my spelling and punctuation pleases you this time! Off to Church now dear!

  • @bobbyjoe12s It's a Tuesday, moron! =]

  • @Whirrednerd Tut tut, what bad language from a "Christian". In My City one can go to Church any day of the week, not that I would be so cranky as to be even interested, have better things to do. TWAT

  • @bobbyjoe12s Tut tut, what bad language from a moron. And the word 'my' and 'city' do not need capital letters.

  • I'm not religious at all, but this song is lovely and it calms me down :)

  • @Footsoldier95 Don't worry there is no chance you will see me doing that anytime soon.

  • I get such goosebumps when listening to this.

  • @Footsoldier95 ....no

  • The first time I heard this, I thought the show was going to be all serious and religious, but then it started and by half a minutes time I knew it wouldn't be. :D

Anyways this is an amazingly beautiful song. Such a beautiful exerpt from the Bible and a beautiful tune. Makes me cry :'''''

  • i used to LOVE this song but when my mum died the preacher recited this to me to comfort me and it's ruined it now. great. just great. ugh.

  • Such a petty it is connected with a comedy show

  • @Alanofskis God doesn't understand humour now, does He?

  • @organisten didn't actually mean God but if you play it somewhere people might start to laugh since it is the theme of a comical series

  • @Alanofskis but doth that not say something about thy - not their - ideas and limitations? I don't think that they will. Perhaps they might smile if they recall something from the TV series; but don't underestimate people. Beauty knoweth no bounds, and still less God.

  • i'm not religious in any way what so ever but this song makes me tingle.

  • @Jadexxpxx I hear the magic of God's love & grace in this song. If more of us displayed his love & grace as we are supposed to, you might well be relgious yourself. That this makes you tingle means you are already a better person than many who claim to follow Him. I wish you well. A friend of mine is a professional tenor. Our English friends bought the music for him there & mailed it to him in Arizona & then told us they too had fallen in love with this song all over again

  • I love this show and I love this song (SO beautiful!!)! Angelic!! Thanks to YouTube's mysteryword for the awesome post!

  • I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE this show, and I love this music even more!! Thanks for posting.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting. It's the most beautiful arrangement of the 23rd Psalm I've ever heard and of course as a diehard V of D fan I've been trying to find it for years. Again, thank you.

  • @americastvchurch thank you

  • I had searched for this song since the first usa broadcast. I caught a enchanted sound half sleep and when I awoke the song had ended . I some how managed to find out the tv program vicar of dibley. Loved the characters and theme song. I could not find this song until just recently on YouTube. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Singing this at my grandmas funeral. I'm not religious but the song gives me hope <3

  • @americastvchurch: Purity of faith and loving trust popped into my mind. The words of the Psalm go right to the core of any belief in the Creator and His Immense Mercy. The angelic voice and the lovely choir instill in me an exquisite sense of peace and unearthly love that transcends any dogma and religious affiliation.

  • @2alhudhud

    Well put!

  • @americastvchurch I couldn't agree with you more

  • Wow! I thought it was beautiful in the credits of Vicar. It's even more sublime in its entirity! Thank you. I'd never heard the whole piece before. Stunning.

  • I love this song :D

  • Gives me the chills...

  • Dawn French is awesome in this programme*

  • aba a

Even though I am not a Christian, I love this rendition of this profoundly moving psalm

  • Can anyone tell me the name of this group so I can look it up on Itunes please ?

    Thank you

  • what is this song called?

  • WHERE WOULD I FIND THIS VERSION TO DOWNLOAD? I would love to have it. It's glorious.

  • @MEeusic There i certain sites I believe which offer you to download an mp3 track of a video., Just search something like youtube2mp3 :P

  • I fell in love with this song the moment I heard it, it really is beautiful and brings me much joy.

  • I think this is a beautiful piece of music, but this performance is a shade too fast for my liking. It's a little rushed (just listen to the word "pastures").

  • @eoinsac I like though how it quickens in the valley-of-the-shadow-of-death bit :) builds

  • I'm not really religious but I still love this this song very much. Its so beautiful. I wish they still made The Vicar of Dibley episodes. That show was great. <3

  • @doggieyo Well I am sure hearing this hymn does cause you to picture the beauty of God and I am sure you get a slight picture and like that you are taking in 20 % of this song's meaning but you are really missing the other 80% of faith by not believing in Christ and his glorious Church. Try praying, you have nothing to loose. Go to Mary and she will take you through to Jesus. God bless you.

  • @priest008 No, when I listen to this I mainly picture the beauty of earth and nature, oddly enough with of course scenes from The Vicar of Dibley (since thats where I first heard it). Thank you though. :)

Its a very beautiful song and I quite enjoy listening to it.

  • Even as someone not religious, it's impossible not to appreciate how beautiful this music is.

  • Beautiful. I love the music that religion has brought us. On a par with "I Vow To Thee, My Country".

  • this song relieves me of everything in the world and that's hard to do nothing else has given me this feeling

  • this was our chiors favorite song to sing, and our chior directiors favorite too. when we sang it at concert she cried, and many of us were close to the same.

  • This song gets me every time with tears!

  • i could just imagine st bernadette, st francis of assisi, lucia santos, joan of arc, ect signing this beautiful song and its also my favorite psalm as a catholic and as a 27 yr old man

  • @jopeon It is definately my favourite psalm as a 26 year old anglican. Amen and peace

  • we sang this in church today...beautiful

  • This was played at my Great Uncle Garnet's funeral today during the service then read by the vicar when they lowered the coffin into the grave.

Goodbye Uncle Garnet. I will always remember you. Rest in Peace. :'(

  • this show sortv looks like a copy of father ted, the writin and all, but its nt a bad tune :)

  • @ulty77 its so much better lol

  • Howard Goodall at his very best!!! I always get goosebumps & teary when I listen to it.

  • goosebumps!!!!!

  • scribd (dot) com/nb812

  • Perhaps only the British could pull off a sitcom that captured the holy and outrageous with the most beautiful version of the 23rd Psalm as the theme song no less. I discovered this show on a trip to England. Googled info says Fox tried an American version with Kirstie Alley in the lead role; but it never aired. Probably just as well.

  • A few years ago, the school choir I was with (Madrigalis of Northampton School for Girls) had the privlege of singing before Howard Goodall and county-wide music teachers. Would have been great to have sung this as a sort of tribute to Goodall.

  • I love Howard Goodall, such an inspirational composer, in music and thoughts

  • absolutely beautiful :') my favourite version :)

  • @wasssuppp08 The lyrics and writer can be found in THE BIBLE. Psalm 23.

  • The Lord is my Shepherd

  • Isn't nice that we remember the kind-hearted people? God bless your grandad. I bet he's safe at home in Heaven.

  • Such A Amazing Song And Tv Show I Love Vicar Of Dibley Wish They Made More :)

  • bless you for watching.....

  • this make me cry again and agian its soooo lovely

  • what a lovley setting.

  • I always used to think Dawn French sang this, I dunno why, I could just picture her singing this, it's a great song

  • I Love This Song And The Show Wish They Made More Episodes :)

  • I love this song so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • we did this song for the service last sunday :D

  • Im singing this in my choir. It's a really good song,

  • I am an atheist, but I love this song!

  • -ago i will at 21 do my very best to forfill a wish to sing it one last time. Just had a practice now and tbh brought it all back for me, the good and the bad, but memories are my fuel to my voice and because i loved my family so dear, I will sing this song exactly as heard 1 last and final time! Still not religious today but for the love of others I will do it! x Read From the bottom up if your interested!

  • But during my time i dnt have the voice you would wanna hear on Xfactor but ive loved that song so much since a child it was my pride to sing this original song - unless its the TV version i aint singing it! - But the little lad you hear like a girl lol in the beginning is like listening to a real life echo of my own voice as a kid, i've heard other versions of this and hate them compared to this! So as a token of my love to my dearly departed family and a dear friend who pasted away a few days-

  • this song touched me from the minute i heard it from a very young age when watching this funny series! Since before i can even remember ive only made 1 request for my funeral and that this song is to be played for me! When i was younger im now 21 i was roped into the church as part of a previous generation's wish that it continued, it didnt last i soon became that rebellious teen and did my own thing.

  • You no need be religious to love this song.

  • Cool man! (khamill473) That's must be a great experience. I'm starting to sing religious choral music, and it's way different from other kind of choral music. You need to practice like 3 times more!

  • soooooooooo soothing =)

  • thankyou

  • Love this song

  • singing this in 2 weeks in water front hall

  • This was written by Howard Goodall (who, believe it or not, also wrote the theme music for "Mr. Bean"). The lyrics are almost word for word Psalm 23, King James version.

  • I'm also not particularly religious but do like this song. I may be wrong, but I think some bloke named David wrote the original, this version seems to be slightly altered and shortened from the King James rendition of his passage.

    Cheers,

    Dustin

  • So beautiful.

  • This great song always brings tears to my eyes

  • @Wildfox01 - no tears for me, but it certainly sends my soul soaring!!! We had to have UK friends send us the music for it. Show first aired 1994.

I added this to my 1994 playlist, there's a list for every year back to 1900 so you can listen to the music of any past year as though back in the day, up to 2 hours.

There's also a list for each of my 300 favorite artists, hope you look !!

  • This must be what Heaven sounds like

  • Absolutely beautiful!

  • I want this sung when I walk down the aisle at my wedding, whenever it please God that may be!

  • Wonderful

  • That is a good thing :) This is a really nice song, Jesus is our true shepherd. 'For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.' John 3v16.

He died for you because he loves you so much. He died for your sins. Just by beliving in Him you shall be saved!

May God Bless and Keep you :)

  • Truly great! Makes me think of converting to Christianity, actually.

  • this very theme tune was played at ma grandpas funeral damn it i miss him

  • howard goodall is great. great choir.

  • does anybody know who sang this version?

  • I think at the end credits it will say which choir it was, I'll have to dig out the DVD's and check

  • Ok, Via wikipedia:

The theme music was composed by Howard Goodall to Psalm 23, and was performed by The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford with George Humphries singing the solo[citation needed]. The conductor was Stephen Darlington. It has been released as a charity single with proceeds to Comic Relief. It also appears on Goodall's CD Choral Works.

  • incredible beautiful.. love the way they say "grrrrrrrreen"

  • yeah they roll the R it is very common with church choirs

  • This is about the most powerful song ever known.

  • @stone412 to a deaf blind frog maybe... but to the rest of the music listening world, certainly not.

  • @cynicismSteve oh yes obviously, because a frog being blind has ANYTHING to do with its ability to listen to music. For the record, I expect that frog would at least, unlike you, have manners. Harrumph!

  • @stone412 ya reckon? bit dodgy when you think about it?

  • An absolutely lovely song to open a wonderful show. Thank you for uploading.

  • Cool

  • It's like the women version of Father Ted

  • Vicar of Dibley Rocks

  • Lovely song. I love the show too ;)

  • Pure beauty.

  • psalm 23 is my favourite psalm, and I think it sounds well good on Vicar of Dibley

  • cool beans

  • At the danger of sounding totally uneducated; I thought this music was antiquated piece. I did not realize that Howard Goodall, friends of Rowan Atkins of Mr. Bean fame, was the composer. He does have variety.

  • I wholeheartedly agree with both comments last made.

  • beautiful rendition. miss the show.

  • This is the best setting of Psalm 23 I have ever heard. :-) very moving

  • agree
