  • Mr. Mike's interpretation of this gargantuan piece is mandolin sublime.

  • Interesting to see him pick this one for mandolin. I'm not sure it works. When's he just gonna get it over with and record a cd of the sonatas and partitas? I'd totally buy that.

  • Why is it chopped up and sections trimmed out?

  • Ha! I was thinking, I got to see him do this at Old Settler's Music Festival a couple of years ago on a Sunday morning ... and that's what this performance is, I think. It was unbelievable - not a sound from the audience the whole time - everybody riveted - and we exploded when he finished.

  • Where's the first part of this amazing performance?

  • This is not a concerto; it is Bach's Chaconne, from his 2nd Partita for solo violin, as stated in the info paragraph under the video. A concerto is a piece for a soloist or soloists and a large ensemble.

  • Does any know the name of this Concerto?

  • anyone else heart the nokia ringtone :P?

    awesome player, though

  • I use flat wound strings on my mandolin and they give a nice warm sound

  • wonderful playing!

  • lol i can play it just cos i play violin :p

  • Mike Marshall is best modern style mandolin player on the planet. He is selfless in his dedication to the production of beautiful music of all varieties...

    Very cool man!

  • What a lovely sound Mike gets from his mandolin. Does anybody know which make and model mandolin produces such a soft and soothing sound? Does one need to get thinner strings? play further from the bridge?

Most of the mandolins that I hear on YouTube sound harsh and metallic to me. I'd sacrifice volume any time to get a sound like Mike gets.

  • mike plays a 1924 gibson f5 signed by llyod loar. its a $150,000 instrument

  • @desafinad0 He has an epically good Loar mandolin and also he plays at the very base of the fretboard, on top of it sometimes. It gives a nice warm sound, rather than the harsh sound next to the bridge (which can be useful!)

  • Hey, really cool man.

  • I wanna hear music like Mike Marshall. He is inspirational and a flat out nice guy.

  • echo mandoniaa - it's such a privilege to watch and hear devotion this real.

  • I particularly enjoyed the brazilian rhythms added to the arpeggio parts...way to go...
