I couldn't like this enough. I love how people who get pissed about this shit are the same ones that know nothing about the fucking thing, fuck those people. I'm not a fan of any comic book writers or artist.. I can only name a few... but damn I think I'll have to find more warren ellis works.
wow is Spooney the only one who ever told ppl about this. I just Got the Graphic novel Yesterday. yeah Really Good Stuff. Thought Provoking , and Lots Of Porn in it Defiantly. I Mean Tom Noir's Stump..HELLO! lol
Thanks for the suggestion. I loved Transmetropolitan and Nextwave. Was not even aware this was around. I was able to get my hands on the series and was not able to stop until I reached the end of seven. It was fucking brilliant. Warren Ellis rocks socks, docks, and cocks, and helluva a lot more.
I hadn't read any of Warren Ellis's stuff until I saw this video, I've now read Planetary, Nextwave and am working my way through Transmetropolitan. I'm loving his stuff, so thanks for bring it to my attention :)
I really wanna read this, Its like in Justice League where a parallel universe Lex Luthor Becomes President and Super Man kills him in the office, only the military didnt come after them they became Leaders of the world controlling everything so no crime is ever done, monitoring everything from their watch tower. Hated by all all of the world.
So I hope to find this, might be hard in New Zealand but ill have a look around and see what I can find.
think I'll wait for it to be available in graphic novel, but I love the idea of how evil and good conflict and how it's hard to see what's good and what's evil. Certainly sounds like something I'd be interested in reading.
looks good, but I'm hesistant to buy anything drawn by Juan Ryp, after he worked of Frank Miller's Robocop. I'm not sure if it was because it was a screenplay adaption, or the fault of the writer who adapted it(or even Miller himself), but the art had no flow to it.
Also I wouldn't call Spider a sociopath. He's shown to actually care for some, but is just very angry and violent.
that sounds awosme and i thik people dont know wtf their talken about cause america is a country where there is fredom and when people say its not american their tryen to put a limit on what people can write not leting them share ideas with the american public ideas that make u think instead of POW good guys win bad guys lose cause in the real world that not the way it is i think people who call a thing like this un american are themselves un american
no, it just means that it's not very "american" like. It doesn't live up to american standards is what it means. It's not demeaning other races such as german (which btw i share the blood, rock on bro), it's like i said, just mentioning it's not american like.
Endyyn, "anti-American" would probbaly be a better term for what they meant. And "un-American" doesn't mean worse than an American; it means, in essence, something counter to what is presumably American ideals. The term is really only used for unpatriotic Americans (both parties use the term to describe that which they dislike), for the most part, so no need to bunch up your knickers. I have never heard the term used toward someone of a different nationality.
i was wondering, whats your opinion on the JTHM series and its spinoffs (squee!, i feel sick, and i think zim was one too even though it had none of the same characters it had some of same running jokes and elements like the cd sespool)
I thought "Black Summer" was merely OK. The conclusion leaves so much to be desired. As with most of Warren Ellis' other work, it starts off with big ideas and then sort of fizzles. Planetary is an excellent example of this tendency. Black Summer 7 and Planetary 26 parallel each other by leaving a whole yarn ball of loose plot ends. Warren Ellis has not really produced a truly spectacular work yet. So far it's all self-promotion.
Thanks for the good reference. You know, I've been looking for a good comic since Preacher which (once you get past the blantant racism) is a good read. I followed it up with THE BOYS (anti super hero hit squad) but it didn't measure up. So, I'll try Black Summer. Thanks!
It's nice to know that at least one comic book author is willing to tackle a story above and beyond any of the usual constraints put on such stories. It's also a bit eerie that I've come up with such a story before as an idle imagining, never even realizing that somebody had put those idle imaginings in comic form. I may well have to look into these comics...
true. Mostly because it's hard to buy and keep following a new comic series. A best strategy is to immediately buy the first issue as soon it's released before the next issue and just keep using this strategy unrtil the series is finished. Finished series are easy as you can easily but all of the issues at once or just buy another one when you feel like you need another.
I like it when people look past simple politics for simple philosophical questions.
Having lived in an extremely politically biased college town for five years now, it's hard to get away from taking said "cheap shots" at Pres. Bush or any remaining local Republican politician for that matter for every problem that comes across the spectrum.
Not that I personally think they shouldn't take a flying leap, but the other side looks just as bad doing the same thing.
While I did enjoy this, I think you should tear something a new asshole soon. I'm forgetting the classic spoony spirit of spite, hatred and cynical anti-hypism. This was entertaining, but I think it's time for classic, old school spoony (Noha).
love your reviews dude, whether you're bashing something shit or bigging up something awesome you get to the core of the issue and explain with clarity and insight why you take the stance you do, makes engrossing viewing.
about black summer, it's not one i've heard of. i normally read stuff like the sandman and i've got most issues of etrigan the demon and i read other stuff but the premise to this one sounds ambitious and promising and i'm gonna pick it up and have a read. cheers spoony
But you have piqued my interest, and the concept of a hero turned as the media would quote "Terror-ist" and "Amerikuhs enemy". Lets just hope all the fundamentalists one day go and missenterpret the bible, again, and kill each other as a "GOD's will".
ya that looks pretty kick ass with a message that really makes u think...the people who protested r just pricks who have nothing better to do than bitch and complain bout anything they can and if they see a opening to protest they will do it cause there dicks period
Spoony, if you like comics that are entertaining, yet they make you think, you must read the manga "Death Note", a great story about a person's individual responsibility to insure a just society.
You know...that's a very difficult philosophical question for most people to even contemplate. What if there is a mass murderer behind the desk of the oval office, and a vigilante is thereby forced to end the life of this murderer at the expense of his own reputation solely for what is right?
Brilliant work, Spoony, on unveiling a comic I definately want to go read, now!

ah yes, Warren Ellis, one of my favorites personally, Nextwave is a favorite of mine and wished they continued that although I did love their little cameo in Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness
anyways, I'm surprised you didn't mention one of Ellis's other famous work he started, The Authority and maybe his run on other books like Thunderbolts and Hellblazer
You see...I liked Nextwave and Transmetropolitian respectively for it's parody, and the would character Spider Jerusalem. YouTube is doing something weird to my video by not stretching it to fill the window whenever I'm in front of the camera. Strange, the master copy I have on my computer looks fine.
