  • I don't think I heard a gong in there.. I played percussion through the Bluefield Highschool Band, favorite song in all my years there

  • It's surprising seeing how many people liked playing this song. The Wind Ensemble at my school hated it. Not so much the calm beginning of the overall piece, but this part. The odd timing and some seemingly sporadic and random moments made it a very odd piece, especially without a percussion section that can keep a beat. And Mark Camphouse said he hated Sedona, which all of us liked playing. I did enjoy playing Tuba in pretty much all this piece, except 0:25 to 1:12.

  • Played this my senior year in high school During the day of competition I actually teared up playing this I was tuba probably one of my favorite pieces to ever play

  • this piece is stunning--our band is just learning it--and I get to play the bassoon solo!

  • I'm just learning the bassoon part for this--absolutely stunning!

  • I LOVE the tuba's at 2:15.

  • If there's one thing that I hate about this piece, it's the page turn in the tuba part at the 5/4 (around 0:47) and it didn't help since I was the only tuba player at the time. Asides from the dodgy publishing, this is a piece to play before you give up Concert/Wind Banding.

Merry Christmas, and remember Rosa Parks!

  • Love it, we played this my senior year in highschool it was a awsome experience not going to knock any thing, because it was done well I feel there is a handful of peices you only do if your confident your ensamble can handle it to me this is on that list. :) great job!!

  • Our band played this last year and I played 1st trombone. I love the part at 1:28 and I loved playing the short little solo at 1:55. Mark Camphouse did an amazing job writing this piece.

  • This second half brings me to tears everytime. Man I love music.

  • I'm not sure why somebody marked my message as spam; I was just commenting that this performance sounded good, and that we played it in concert band back in high school.

  • I'm not sure, but I'm glad it's back!

Thank you for your comment :)

  • In my opinion, the parts around 3:50 - 4:12 needed ALOT more energy, it was a major trumpet part there, the nice build into a big FF, then a nice resolve...

  • @umby24 : Not saying I don't agree, but at the same time this is a recording and it is very difficult to judge...

  • wow i looove this song!!! we're playing it in high school and we actually got to meet mark camphouse at a clinic testerday. absolutley amazing. i thought that the brass especially horns could been louder (since i play horn) =]. but amazing job!

  • Wow I love this song sooooooooo much!! I played trombone for this piece in high school back in my senior year in high school and we played at Concert festival and got a superior rating! Love love love this piece! so moving!!! Right on to you guys! Some parts could have been a bit slower and fluid and some a little more pushed through, but all in all it was executed pretty good.

  • Nicely played! When I played it a UNH, I struggled a lot with the toms part at 0:35

  • I played this song at FSU a few months ago. I never quite understood why it ends on such an interesting chord, but it's not my place to question the composition.

  • It ends unresolved to illustrate the idea that racial conflict, despite decades of progress against it, is still among us today.

    Hope that helps.

  • its an amazing song i was

tryin to hold back tears the

music just gets to u and

u can feel the emotion :D

  • @wsnievin Thats exactly what our conductor told us! since were not from the place nor the time it all happened she tried to explain the piece and its meaning. I find it very beautiful to end on that F# and E in think to demonstrate the unresolved conflict. Im 15 years old and preparing for National competition next week. this is our last song.

  • @wsnievin is "rosa" in reference to be rosa parks?

  • @penguinpoop4 Not a just reference. this song was composed as a memoir to her

  • Our band played this for State MPA and we only had 2-3 weeks to prepare it because my band director decided to switch it up. We were so worried about this one.... It got straight A's across the board from one of the judges... We still ended up with excellents in the end... My band director said not to worry about it. Only 2 bands got superiors out of the entire state...

  • i absolutely love the horns at 1:28, especially the trill at 1:44. it's glorious.

  • @seecritagent its not horns its a euphonium part, i played it last night :-)

  • awesome! i love this piece

  • the second half of this piece is a lot of fun to play!:)

...not looking forward to working on a new piece

  • Is this the concert band or wind ensemble?

  • This was the IUP Wind Ensemble.

  • I absolutely love this song! My band just played it for our last concert, I'm sad that we've moved on from playing it. It's probably been my favorite band piece of all time.

  • ok...for my highschool band we are playing this this year and its a very nice peice but it is also very complicated. im freshman and i play tuba any tips on how to read the music?

  • Get lessons.....

  • The tempo to me was a tad fast but it sounded better at that tempo. Beautiful song. Bring back memories. 3 years ago. Conducting was a bit hard to gasp but I eventually understood it. Some of the key melodic lines weren't there because of the brass over powering. The little doodling in the woodwinds was missing but overall excellent.

  • i play tuba, and this is easily the greatest baseline i have ever played.

  • @pkm321 Me too. I love this song to begin with, and for once the tubas get an entertaining and exciting part. It's absolutely fantastic.

  • this is definitely my favorite part of the song :)

  • my all time favorite song.<3 this brings back memories. :P

  • Ah! I played this 4 years ago and I still remember it so well. I'll never forget this piece. It was beautiful and so much fun to play.

  • i love how he doesn't resolve the last chord at the end to further prove that racial equality has not been fully resolved in the world today...great writing and its a fun piece to play currently in the Pitt State we are playing this piece and i love the 1st trombone part that i play
