@LFWOL Equal silliness to say "there are thousands of musicians on his level...". Just how would you know that? As for "Coltrane was on drugs", that just shows ignorance of the turns his life took away from drugs and alcohol and towards spirituality. In any case, since when did drug addiction prevent artists reaching the highest pinnacles of achievement? Think Beethoven, for example.
Well I'm not a RETARD because I believe in God, you insignificant little pin headed twit! To ty to argue comparisons between these totally different type of musicians is pointless anyway, kind of like your life without God--pointless. Whither you like it or not, God is obviously working on you to bring you closer to him, or you wouldn't say something like that and react so harshly. I'll be praying for you Buckwheat!
@us13doolittle Indeed, I am myself an atheist, for very personal reasons, and the belief in god is not a ridiculous thing as people try to reach the outer being or as I might say the outer knowledge that we believe in being the ultimate of everything. Even if you are a atheist you have the believe that this universe holds a centre of creation, maybe not god, but something else. John was reaching to this being.

Can a God ever be human? An early christian named Minucius Felix, in The Octavius, Chapter 23 wrote: "..Therefore neither are gods made from dead people, since a god cannot die; nor of people that are born, since everything which is born dies. But that is divine which has neither rising nor setting. For why, if they were born, are they not born in the present day also?.. Or has that process of generation ceased, for the reason that no assent is any longer yielded to fables of this kind?.."
John 10:33, 14:11, 19:11, Luke 24:44-49, Matthew 12:38-40, Hebrews 7:1-3. I agree, there are many equal and potentially high-level artists, all over the globe, but due to circumstances aren't able to manifest it, at times... A Love Supreme is, well supreme. Our favourite thing(s)...
Wow. I assume you're not that aware of jazz or jazz history.. "thousands of musicians on his level" is beyond ignorant. Trane was a genius. Sax players even today, more than 40 years after his death are still in his shadow. He wasn't everyone's cup of tea, especially towards the end of his life, but he was a giant. Many, many classical players, even virtuosos are unable to improvise. That requires skill both as a player and a complete mastery of theory which they lack.
Coltrane once said he want to be God. His music finally reached that point and his music is a description of that world. It is easy for Coltrane freak to understand 1965,66,67 Coltrane and for others it is only too many sound, too quick sound, too dense sound that is beyond understanding of their musical brain. The world Coltrane is talking about through his music is far above our place. Perhaps nobody has ever seen it except Coltrane.
I think that, at this point in his life, his music transcended the human realm. Heck, Coltrane himself probably didn't feel human when he played this. I'd guess he just felt like a wave of sound careening out of the chord structures and a saxophone. Inspiring.
Here it is. The deepest, hungriest, most intense and lofty pursuit of pure sound that may ever have manifested- at his peak, right before the end.

Coltrane was VERY spirtual

I think if someone believes in God, they would not be calling other people "pin headed twits." Not a very spiritual outlook. Just my humble opinion.

there was just something about this band that was so profound

@pongosgroove5 Yeah, I would read Joseph Campbell before a jazz critic, if you want to know "why."

@LFWOL I'm pretty sure Stravinsky was on John's same spiritual level when he was writing the Rites Of Spring. I'm not talking about the drugs.

I love John Coltrane's music deeply, yet I cannot say why. He was a very special person.

i have a hard time believing coltrane said he wanted to be god, he was a christian, and dedicated A Love Supreme to God..
Saying you want to be God is Blasphemy beyond every line there ever was.
