Perhaps a jack plane would suffice, too. What these bars represent to those of us who would use them is that they allow quick, reliable, repeatable results. They are of good quality by reputable people and save the effort of making them in house. Some will just be too busy doing good work. Save the money, sign your work.
@MCAMETAL Try it with feeler gauges, and you'll realize the kit is the way to go. Those bars are precisely ground, hardened and inspected for parallelism.
