Please remember, this does not represent the entire school, this was the Graduate program. If you want to really see great work, take a look at the undergraduate program. the Graduate program is about 22 students per graduate program. The undergraduate program and a much better variety of types of people and work. This was teh FINE ARTS program.
ok i really thought all u guys wer jus talkin shit to these guys but uhh most of that like reallllly sucked! an i wana go to this school more then anything. i hope its not a let down yo haha
but is it hard to get in. i just recently heard of it so i dont know. what kinda stuff has to be in the portfolio. the website doesnt really help in telling me about the portfolio. please get back to me.
THe interviewer sounds arrogant, SVA ... ? "folks"
"Residency"? I've seen similar art from "at risk" teenagers. why don't you discuss context of this sheeaat. Revealing to see David Gibson is in the mix and can't even talk to the camera without filming the interviewer. Get some therapy all of you.
Saatchi is not really likely to come by our open studios. We all need more time for our work to grow and brew but we also need feedback and interaction with the art world. we have the same love of artmaking as columbia and some extra humility too. so come by and see. no art cradle robbing neccessary!
Wow that shit was awful...there was a few good paintings but all bad ideas presented in bad ways....and screw the "this is all internally based" aka I'm too lazy to look at a lot of contemporary art guy...bleh.
Somehow I got on Gabriel Serpa's e-mail list. He's a very sweet kid. People who complain about the healthy market are too young to remember the 90's when people had to kiss major ass in grad school, marry well or have art world relatives to get a gallery. I'm happy for these kids and don't forget they are dealing with a brutal rental market in neighborhoods that once welcomed us. Good luck to them.
I have to agree with you, the one from jersey seems to be the only one in that gallery that has a strong foundation in STUDIO ART.. anyone can do abstract.. but to draw, paint and design it's where the real skill in art is at.
Really dug your work William, especially the first large piece that we see. Also liked the surfaces the Travis Bickle looking guy was able to achieve. The graffiti guy had some cool stuff and the New Joisey Catholic is obviously very talented.
This piece relates to my latest column "Gangs of New York" in the Jul/Aug edition of the "Brooklyn Rail". Young artists need to be intelligent and articulate when talking about their art. I've been in the situation, 30 seconds to impress a big-shot, a once in a lifetime chance. Don't blow it, JK
I love it, you made those poor kids jump hoops, but they got the point, all of them were good but it's still too early to see a string, hahaha, "a New Joisey Cat'lick!" hahaha!!
James Kalm down, 4 million potential viewers here?

@sideshowvideo well its not a total waste maybe you can learn 1 or 2 facts but the graduate program sucks its all about undergrad

@7chandr
I'm almost a year late in my reply to your comment. What did you decide?
I wouldn't enroll in SVA there but depends on what you are going for.
Its NOT like really going to college at all. Just get a real education. Your not going to make any good art till your at least 30 yrs old.

Not impressed with the art work in grad school campuses now days. Not many grad students actually turning out any work, mostly research.
