Its called diesel knock its normal but if deafens your ears then your crank timing is incorrect and your valve seals need replacing old engine.. As it is burning oil possibly due to a broken oil seals or broken valve which means too much air intake when igniting the fuel causing a loud noise.
Diesel knocks go after a they reach the normal operating temperature but initially cold start they are loud.
angelb650650 is talking shite, what a twat. This sounds normal give it a valve ajusment and oil change. I hate these know it all know nothing aseholes.
My old 1973 Mercedes 220 Diesel had the same problem.
Change the vacuum pump at the front of the engine. I do recommend buying a new vacuum pump. Assure that the vacuum pump diaphram is in good condition. The diaphrams are rubber and the smallest pin hole can cause big problems. Go to your nearest mercedes dealer and buy the diaphram. Also, take one quart of ATF automatic tansmission fluid and pour into fuel tank. This will lube the injectors.
was it a taxi version? I heard that MB made a few 240Ds in a base model version, which was a shell basical, and was sold to taxi companys in Europe. I have not seen one yet...
ı am living in turkey and my father has a mercedes benz part shop since 1985. so he had this motor :) our car was not original. in original it was 250se. but it was very good car :)
