i remember when they started putting in 2 separate processors in macs and i was like "come on we should have like 4ghz processors by now" i didn't realize this was like dual core (or quad), apple was way ahead of intel with this
@Flybyhacker yes the cpu's in ps3 and ps3 are designed and built by power pc, they are built with a specific architechture designed to work perfectly. and ONLY with the operating system on those macheins. when you install linux on a ps3 it runs slower then my old pentium4 pc. even tho each of the 8 cores is faster then the one core in my old pc.
No, they wouldn't. Those CPU's are highly optimized for gaming and poor at general computing. Apple stopped using PowerPC in the Macs because IBM hit a wall with thermal efficiency for the desktop Power chips and wasn't interested in supplying desktop versions any longer. The Power architecture still exists, but only in high end systems now where the restraints of a desktop computer don't get in the way.

@MKuhlberg Linux did have the access to the GPU nor the CPU. Sony allowed another OS to be installed but not have the access to the hardware.

the G5 quad is an "old" class powermac, with one drive. The "new" quad is the MacPro. (with two slot, of course)
