@FederSim her voice obviously isn't what it used to be. She's lost some range and control, especially in her lower range and midrange. 20 years of singing the crap out of every song will do that to you. Her vocal chords are very fragile. It's too bad that a gift like this has been damaged but that's life taking it's course. Amazing performance, 2 extremely hard songs to sing! We Belong Together is such a tough song to sing, there is almost continuous phrasing with hardly any time to breathe.
We all have our own opinions regarding this performance. Frankly, I think she sang the hell out of the second tune. Sometimes it's not all about vocal quality. Passion and anointing account for a lot during a performance. She killed Fly Like A Bird...sang her face off. Yes, her voice has declined, but we're all effected by time! I applaud her for still being able to deliver that type of LIVE performance after 20 plus years in the business.
Mariah sounds like she strained her voice and doesn't really sing like she used to..well, that's what more than 20 years of oversinging will do to ya....but I think she still sounds great, but not as great as before....she sang effortlessly and with power back in the 90s....I still love her and think she has the best voice ever! you should check out her 90s live performances before comparing her to singers of today =p

She's just brilliant at lipping, and although some parts were live (verses, parts of Fly Like a Bird's belting), a lot of the 'tough' notes (G#5 belt, or whistles) are lipped (We Belong Together, minus the failed C5). She live belts the easier stuff, and that is VERY scratchy, yet the bigger stuff sounds perfect? It's impossible: She can't strain getting out a C5, then miraculously sing in G#5 in chest voice.
@Judgeyy Have you ever thought that maybe, just MAYBE, the reason the End note in We Belong Together is strained is because she just spent an entire chorus Belting out high notes & maybe she just didn't catch her breath? I have every Mariah song ever recorded, I have this performance on my iPod - I'm a massive fan, however I'm a realistic fan. She probably was out of breath, you know why? Because she is singing, but her mic is turned off to allow the pre-recording to take over. So yes, she may be out of breath from belting, but the belting you hear is not her as she sings, it's the same pre-recording she's used at the MTV Movie Awards.

Amazing performance, 2 extremely hard songs to sing! We Belong Together is such a tough song to sing, there is almost continuous phrasing with hardly any time to breathe.

We all have our own opinions regarding this performance. Frankly, I think she sang the hell out of the second tune. Sometimes it's not all about vocal quality. Passion and anointing account for a lot during a performance. She killed Fly Like A Bird...sang her face off. Yes, her voice has declined, but we're all effected by time! I applaud her for still being able to deliver that type of LIVE performance after 20 plus years in the business.

Mariah sounds like she strained her voice and doesn't really sing like she used to..well, that's what more than 20 years of oversinging will do to ya....but I think she still sounds great, but not as great as before....she sang effortlessly and with power back in the 90s....I still love her and think she has the best voice ever! you should check out her 90s live performances before comparing her to singers of today =p

Haha, when people have to DISPUTE whether or not someone, who is clearly displaying pure passion & emotion, is lip syncing, it just shows what an amazing voice they have. She's Mariah Carey for a reason, she shut it DOWN that night.

@Kbyrd2011 No one is saying she doesn't dominate the stage. She's just brilliant at lipping, and although some parts were live (verses, parts of Fly Like a Bird's belting), a lot of the 'tough' notes (G#5 belt, or whistles) are lipped (We Belong Together, minus the failed C5). She live belts the easier stuff, and that is VERY scratchy, yet the bigger stuff sounds perfect? It's impossible: She can't strain getting out a C5, then miraculously sing in G#5 in chest voice.

@Judgeyy Have you ever thought that maybe, just MAYBE, the reason the End note in We Belong Together is strained is because she just spent an entire chorus Belting out high notes & maybe she just didn't catch her breath? I mean, to say that is performance, of all her performances, is lipped is just ignorant & ridiculous. When she's displaying talent right in front of your eyes, just accept it.

I have every Mariah song ever recorded, I have this performance on my iPod - I'm a massive fan, however I'm a realistic fan. She probably was out of breath, you know why? Because she is singing, but her mic is turned off to allow the pre-recording to take over. So yes, she may be out of breath from belting, but the belting you hear is not her as she sings, it's the same pre-recording she's used at the MTV Movie Awards.
