Definately, however they will run slow. You can watch my videos for more info. You can use Wine to use Microsoft software, although, I haven't tried that yet.
@Sandquisst I think that this depends on your system. I guess that a multicore CPU with lots of RAM and a very powerful video card can ensure an adequate performance. Of course it depends on the game requirements...
I'd say that VirtualBox IS better than VMware, but not as good or as fast as VMWorkstation. I tried them both and found VMWorkstation marginally faster. Then again VirtualBox is free...
y install antivirus on a virtual copy of windows. if it gets messed up just delete. you must download loads of shit to the point where your getting viruses. my copy of xp opens in like 4 seconds with virtualbox
Can you access a file from virtual os with the main os? fro example could you download a picture on the xp VM and move it to Ubuntu home pictures folder?
gchand7: yes you can. Once you create a new "Virtual OS", in its setting you'll be able to add "Shared Folders" which are the "physical/main/local os's". After adding shared folders, you'll need to "Map Network Drive" in the virtual XP to that location.
my Virtual XP has "shared folders" to Ubuntu's home, and the Data/NTFS partition
yeah you have to install guest additions, then go to devices and click shared folders, create one and choose the directory on your ubuntu os and then in the vm go to my computer, righ-click network in the lower right and hit map network drive. I cant remember it from there but it shouldnt be too hard, i got the whole thing installed and running on my first try
How long did it take for you to install XP on Virtual box? For me it has been taking aaaages, as in 18+ hours. So far it has only formatted the virtual HDD to 100% but doesn't go further.
It should only take 30-60 minutes if you have you have a half-decent computer. How much RAM did you assign to the virtual XP? Should give it at least 192MB.
Oh lol. But noobs dont get it, this is not WinXp. I saw a comment on Beryl PCLinuxOS saying: "OMG you have rons of ram!" WTF, tons of ram? you can run Beryl with 512MB of ram.
why would you say that? your dumb. the virtual pc uses the resources that are availible on the current system. (they are preset by the user...) it can do everything a normal computer could with that operating system installed on the system, but it wont have AS many resources availible because you are now running 2 os
If you mean "can it start your current XP install" then the answer is no. It'll let you run from a virtual machine image that's located in your linux environment. Now making an image of your XP install might work, but no guarantees.
virtualbox or vmware (a similar program) don't support directX. Graphics are very slow. So you're not able to play any games at all. To game on linux you can use "Wine". It's a library to run windows software native in Linux. I play GTA:San Andreas using Wine. Take a look at it.

you're kidding right? windows isn't the plague you know. unless one is referring to windows vista or god forbid, millenium edition which has been extinct for a while now.
I've installed windows xp with virtualbox on my Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. I tried to plug in my nokia n80, but the program nokia pc suite doesn't recognize it...

According to official document, 3D games can run on Windows guest on Windows host. However, the performance may be not very good.

Too bad you can't play any games in virtual box :/
My Windows got fucked, there's no virus but it still reboots every minute lol.
And in Linux everything works just fine, no reboots. Weird.
Anyways it sucks that I can't play games now. Wine doesn't work with the games I wanna play :/
