I'm a multimedia communicologist, and I'm also a multimedia designer. I've been studying interfaces, interactivity processes and virtual tools for a while, and I came up with an interface for a social network for mobile devices, I've done all the visual stuff, thought about all the screens and stuff, but I'm not a programer. How should I get started for making a social network for iPhone?
@boonu Well, creating an entire social network for IOS devices is no small task. In fact, unless you are a born programming genius like Zuckerberg, you are probably going to need a team of programmers. You could start a Kickstarter project to get the funding you need possibly. I will be releasing a tutorial DVD ROM in the near future that will walk you though all the basics and have the full source code to all projects. I can't include source code on Youtube videos.
@bugzilla2001 Zuckerburg, you mention him, the guy who stole facebook from his friend is a total loser. Nobody in the world would rate him any type of genius. He is with Steve Jobs among the people I most hate. Then again I own an ipod and facebook accounts.
@MrDaldagnuur I would use the UIWebview as a starting off point. It's included in Interface Builder's toolbox and easy to use. Once you get the feel for what you can accomplish with that then you can move on to more complex items.
I need someone to write some simple code for view based i phone App. do you write code for people? do you know anyone? some raw programming will do. i can dress it up after.
Very interesting video you posted! Stanford University also has an opencourse available online specifically for programming the iPhone. It's available at iTunes University.
Will the MacBook Pro be fine for developing apps for the iPhone? (You say the Mac Mini might not be able to handle Open GL stuff, will the MBP have these problems?)
@DavidTheDivine I now have a MBP from work and Ican develop on it fine. Now that Apple has updated the Mac Mini line, you should even be able to use those for any kind of programming you need. Just make sure whatever you get doesn't use shared graphics memory because that sucks performance wise.
@jfarinhote A standard iMac is fine for XCode programming. I would not go for a Mac Mini since it's graphics card is not able to handle complex Open GL (for games)
Windows sucks, yes, but it is the most widely used OS in the business world. However its all about preference, so you can use Mac OSx instead. However, I wouldnt dual boot Mac with Windows...I would choose one or the other & make ur other partition Linux. Anyone who uses linux knows that it is superior, its just not always for the less advnced users.
Level of technical skill (1-5): Windows = 3; Mac = 1; Linux = 5
@brewskhee I have, since I posted on the video, decided to dual boot ubuntu, and it is amazing. If I could have all my windows programs and had not paid 800 bucks for the laptop, I would just erase windows completely.
Look into a windows boot emulator called Wine for linux. Won't run all programs (mostly games) but it will run a great deal of them and it only gets better with each release. But, what i did was dual boot my PC for Windows and Linux (windows for games, linux for progs with long run times and testing times for methods), I have Windows on my laptop (work computer and some games), and my netbook is linux only (really only the OS for netbooks out there). My old macbook is Mac OSx.
@brewskhee Thanks a lot for the advice, ive used wine and it works for a lot of my programs. the only issue ive had so far is sometimes when I install a program to WINE, it says it cant find the registry . but o well. I find it funny that you can find good advice from random youtube comments!
@brewskhee Absolutely right.. I hate mac users that flame on windows as if its bad, It just requires more configuration. Mac is the most userfriendly point.
Should I got and buy an mac notebook just to do this?
I'm using a f**king PC! You ppl should explain for both of the computer. IF you can't use it for PC say it. and you ppl need to learn how to explain like you're telling someone who is NEW TO THIS PROCESS!!!!

I agree, the video quality is just horrible, but the tutorial on the other hand is great :P keep up the good work man :P

Ok, follow - up question: We know that one has to have a Mac to program apps, what are the minimum or recommended specs for it? In other words, what would you need to have in a Mac if you bought a used one? (I'm pretty PC literate, but I'd be starting from scratch with a Mac)
@jscook: hopefully you received an answer by now, but basically you're going to meet two requirements with your mac purchase if you decide to get a used Mac:
1) it must be an Intel-based Mac (no G5/G4 models).
2) It needs to at least have Leopard installed (OS X 10.5.x, then update to latest minor version of Leopard via Update - 10.5.3 might be the lowest you can use... not sure on that one).
When i get to changing the background part the console doesnt pop up and i jus get a bunch of the cocoa plugins but no concole so i cant change the background any ideas why but i think its jus cuz im stupidd thanx
can anyone tell me where i can learn about programming and how to do it, because this seems very profitable and interesting and i would really like to learn more about it.
so you can't test your app unless you pay the $100? That's a little weird. Why not just pay the money for being able to post apps on the store? As you can probably tell I am new at iphone development. I have been trying flash coding is that the same as basic c?
What you say makes sense, but that's the sway Apple has set it up. You can test your app for free using the simulator, but the simulator does not have all of the features of the iPhone. Flash programming is much simpler than Objective-C, but the principles of writing programs are the same across programming languages.
You obviously have not looked into programming before. Cost to liscence the Unreal 3 engine? $7999 per seat. Cost to develop a Wii game? $14,000 PER TITLE! A developer friend of mine contacted Sony a long time ago to purchase a PS2 development kit and they would not sell it to him regardless of price. In the development world, $100 is chump change. Publishing on App Store costs nothing and gives access to millions of customers instantly.
look dimiforce made 250,000 in a month and 600,000 in two months its expected to make well over 1million dollers by the next couple of months off 1 app he invested 5000 to make the app 100 is chum change for a big reward in the end if your serious and good
It's what happens in THE REAL WORLD, why should they help you make money if they don't make money ... Normal practice and yes, it's chump change ... Recently a friend of mine put out a 2 DVD set, it cost $30 grand to make, it made $50 grand in the first 3 months ... it's the cost doing business
You mean interface builder? Or do you meam the property inspector? For interface builder to open, you have to double click the file, and to open the property inspector within IB you have to select an element and press Command+1
I don't understand what you are getting at. When you start XCode and select "File->New Project" you should see several iPhone templates. If you do not, then there is something wrong with your XCode installation.
i've wanted to make some applications but I have zero programming experience. What courses can I take to learn about making iphone applications? I'm very computer savy so I'm hoping I can learn quickly
Wait so hold on, if i sign up and make an app that i want to be free, i have to pay them 99 dollars in order for me to be able to put it on m y ipod?!?!
That's correct. Even if your app is free, you have to pay the $99 developer fee. It sucks, but it makes sense when you think about the fact that it costs money to run the app store and they are getting your app out to the world at no expense to you. Most apps are demos of paid products or promotions for other products, so there is a money making goal from these apps in the end anyway. Compared to other development engines I have seen it's cheap.
Ouch! That's harsh! Thanks though man for the info, i appreciate it! I Was signing up as i watched the video, thank god i decided to ask first! i guess i'll have to stick with cydia and installer app :P
You have to pay $99 to become a certified iPhone Developer. This will allow you to build and run as many programs as you want on your iPhone/iPod Touch. You don't have to pay anything extra to build programs for yourself. If you want to share the application with the world, either for free of for sale, you can upload for free to the App Store. Apple has to approve your app to get listed, but there is no extra charge.
I don't know what you mean by home screen. Do you mean what you see when you first start your application? If so, open Interface Builder and design your application interface. If you mean the icon you click to launch the application, you can specify that in the "info.plist" file. There's a line to specify the Icon file.
ya thats what im trying to do. When i click on the "info.Plist" file and i then click on the icon file it just gives me a drop down of like sort codeings. which when u click on one does nothing. I just want to use a picture or something. One that u see on the icon when you click to launch the app.
You need to include the icon graphics in your project (drag and drop it into XCode). Then you can specify the icon file in the info.plist file. I'm going off memory here since I don't have the Mac with me, so check Apple's documentation if there are other steps you need to take.
You must pay the $99 in order to get any programs you write onto the iPhone/iPod Touch. Also, you must have paid the money to get your iPhone programs onto the app store. You can use Xcode for free using the Simulator, but the programs won't run on the actual device until you pay the money. You can use XCode to write Cocoa apps and Java apps without paying the $99 fee.
I have an issue, i hope you can give me some pointers. I have Xcode 3.1.2. When I create a normal Mac OS X project I have access to all of the items in the library that I see in your video, however, when I create an iPhone app, i only have a set of 5 or 6 obscure objects, not including text inputs, labels, etc. Am I missing a download or something?
Do you mean the items are missing in Interface Builder? If you notice in the Interface Builder library panel there is a place to specify which items to show at the top. Make sure you have it set to show all items.

Bugzilla2001. Do u know where in xcode you go to change what the application looks like when u see it on ur home screen?
footballballer57 3 years ago
I don't know what you mean by home screen. Do you mean what you see when you first start your application? If so, open Interface Builder and design your application interface. If you mean the icon you click to launch the application, you can specify that in the "info.plist" file. There's a line to specify the Icon file.

ya thats what im trying to do. When i click on the "info.Plist" file and i then click on the icon file it just gives me a drop down of like sort codeings. which when u click on one does nothing. I just want to use a picture or something. One that u see on the icon when you click to launch the app.
any thoughts on that bugzilla2001?

You need to include the icon graphics in your project (drag and drop it into XCode). Then you can specify the icon file in the info.plist file. I'm going off memory here since I don't have the Mac with me, so check Apple's documentation if there are other steps you need to take.

questions for bugzilla: In order to get the apple SDK i signed up on the site, must i pay the $99 for the SDK to function completely?
klputman2 3 years ago
You must pay the $99 in order to get any programs you write onto the iPhone/iPod Touch. Also, you must have paid the money to get your iPhone programs onto the app store. You can use Xcode for free using the Simulator, but the programs won't run on the actual device until you pay the money. You can use XCode to write Cocoa apps and Java apps without paying the $99 fee.

Nope.
Phabulouso 3 years ago
No. It is absolutely impossible to do this on Windows. You must program on a Mac.
bugzilla2001 3 years ago
is there then other programs so you can make it on windows?

I have an issue, i hope you can give me some pointers. I have Xcode 3.1.2. When I create a normal Mac OS X project I have access to all of the items in the library that I see in your video, however, when I create an iPhone app, i only have a set of 5 or 6 obscure objects, not including text inputs, labels, etc. Am I missing a download or something?
akamrbungle 3 years ago
Do you mean the items are missing in Interface Builder? If you notice in the Interface Builder library panel there is a place to specify which items to show at the top. Make sure you have it set to show all items.
