  • Thanks a lot man! That helped me so much, great job on the cover as well as teaching it! Cheers

  • Awesome cover

  • You are the best, many many thank you.

  • Awesome and thank you!

  • Awesome...you are one of my favorite teachers....and you sound great on this one all the way around...soon I will too...Thank you!

  • great lesson! but im so curious, i keep getting distracted by it, what the hell is taped to your arm?

  • @Hollywood27s its a tattoo

  • you are a fantastic person Justin!

  • I've been working on this one for a long time. You've clarified the details for me. Thanks!

    Paul

  • Thanks dude you got the best vids on youtube

  • I mainly just play the piano (quite badly, if you watch my vids!) but am trying to teach myself the guitar too, and after watching this vid, I can nearly play this song now. Nice tutorial. thx

  • Sweet, Thanks for Sharing!

  • thanks youuu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is such an amazing tutorial! Thank you so much... can you possibly post The Laughing Old Lady?

  • you sound just like niel young

  • fabulous rendition!

  • Thank you so much, Justin - your lessons are really excellent.

  • cool - one play through, couple of pauses.. and I'm there

  • you should do a "cowgirl in the sand" lesson , massey hall 1971 :)

  • Theres hope for me yet, mate; thanks to you. :-D

  • you should have 2 camera angles

  • Good job! Thanks for clearing up some of the chords for me!

  • After listening to this repeatedly and the actual song to try and find out what was missing, and why it wasnt *EXACTLY* right, I noticed a passing chord in the intro and the verse... After you play Esus4 and E, there is a Asus2 passing note before the next verse.

  • Did you make that cutout?

  • It's one thing to be able to play this, but you can actually sing it really good, nice!, thanks for this video.

  • "Go and get all his albums, now! :)"

If I could afford to buy 52+ albums I'd consider it! Does anyone actually own all of Neil's albums?

  • @blowtorch yeah me!!

  • @JustinSandercoeSongs i do too:)

  • @blowtorch My Dad does, he's a fan from way back!

  • You are an incredibly gifted musician and teacher. Peace.

  • At 5.19 you mention not playing the 'thinner string', but on the harvest version he definitely does. Also in the intro he hits the open d as a bass note, clearly, 4 times but I'm not sure about the subsequent chords, whether he's sort of travis picking or what - drives me nuts! Great lesson by the way, as always.

  • @wungabunga he actually doesnt... when neil young plays it, he plays a 12 string, which is why it sounds thicker.

  • @JoshKerrMusician 12 string? Are you sure it's not a double tracked and panned six string? Anyway It's academic. I hear the high E, if that comes from a 12 string - it should to be replicated on the 6 string.

  • @wungabunga Actually that was my mistake sorry, I was thinking of another song of his...

He doesn't play a 12 string at all.. when he plays he accents the bass note and the high note but not the strumming.... the 1st string is not played, it is the 2nd string.

When you play this song, to make it sound like Neil, play it so that you accent the bass note, strum sort of quietly, and accent the high note... if that makes sense... so you get the light and shade that neil does.

  • fuking impossibleee

It's a GREAT Neil Young song and it doesn't seem to be any good tutorials out there on it... so you better do it! ;)

  • Justin, Fantastic tutorial, learned the song super quick with your help!

  • you are really good teaching and playing this song, is one of my favorites, and i am so grateful with you, Congratulations!!, good luck!!..greetings. Thank you very much!

  • Really not a hard song once you get the hang of it. Getting the hang of it is hard as ass though!

  • Your picking is exquisite. Neil Young is the ultimate one man band and you captured that multi layered effect.

  • dude...nice!

  • Amasing !

  • 1:18, epic face.

You're lessons are spot on. I can hammer down a song the way you teach in record time.

  • @BiggousDickous its crazy eh? i know exactly what you mean, i think of a song to learn, search it up, sure enough hes probably got a clip for it give or take an hour or two and im well on my way with the song. ive learned pretty much everything i know from this guy!

  • From this vid I picked up the song over the holidays (despite being a U.S. Transfuse!)

  • honestly your very talented. you are great at guitar and have a very good voice but your not a good teacher. you say how to do one thing and then you do something a tad different. your not very clear on everything.

  • Bravo!

  • g8 vid thanks !!

  • I am new at the guitar. Can anyone tell me what he is doing with the Esus and Emanj chords. It's not a strum, right. I can't tell. Thanks if you can help!

  • great! but i'd love the tabs!

  • beautiful playing singing, great lesson 5/5 ! thank you

  • Excellent!! Awesome lesson, you are "spot on :)" mate.

    Thank you!

  • can someone send me the tabs on this version, i may have the wrong one.

  • holy shit. awesome cover. you make it look too easy

  • I wouldn't presume to tell you your business (dude you rule) However, from what I can hear and when I play it (badly) I try to keep a percussive banging on the side of the guitar with the side of strumming hand. Sounds like that's what he's doing to my ear. Love your vids.

  • Justin, can't begin to tell you how much I enjoy N. Young also, definately one of my favorites of all time. Thanks for all you do, especially the little civic lessons.

    Peace,

    JN

PS. who are the 7 idiots that don't like this video. Never mind, they are US teabaggers.

  • Thanks a million!! You are an excellent teacher! Do you have "Old Man"?

  • @tomw911 I...erm, second this question, I guess.

  • Whoever disliked this are tone deaf

  • Great clear lesson !!!

  • Justin,

That is awesome playing!!!! Thanks, I'm trying to learn this song. Bravo friend!!!

  • Your version is the best, IMO. Thank you.

  • I clapped out loud. Bravo.

  • Thankss for this awesome video! awesome tutorial :D

  • Justin : I play this with the the percussive melodic style that you taught..but I still SUCK at it. The brain knows what to do but can't get the hands to work it yet, yes I know...practice,practice,practice.

  • This is the first video of yours that I have watched. You sounded so much like Neil, I was floored when I heard you... accent (sorry, I am but an American, judgmental of the worlds' way of speaking.)

I'm glad to have found you. I'm learning guitar, the folk way :)

  • @bignick1919 he does talk a lot but he is a good guitar teacher... check out his website, its all for free too.

  • Holy Shit! GREAT JOB! This guy is a great guitarist

  • feeling the feeling!!!!!!!excellent thats what music is all about.any chance of a blind faith, cant find my way home

  • Very Nice! Probably the best tutorial out there for this song.

  • if you haven't done it, i request don't let it bring you down

  • good teacher, i learned some folk fingerpicking techniques from you on youtube before, keep it up

  • I have played this song for a while now and think you version is the best I have heard. Almost perfect though I think there is something that Neil does in at time frame 59 sec through 1:07 or so that has a strange sort of echo sound to it., some sort of tempo that is difficult to copy...any thoughts on what he is doing?

  • for some reason it did not allow the link to the utube video of N.Y but if you search for "The Neil Young - Needle & The Damage Done (live)" you will see the old video

  • That is one great lesson, thankyou!

  • thanks, Justin. you play this perfectly. I have played this for years, but never had that run down. I will play it right now thanks to you. great song and great lesson.5****

  • Similar in picking style to 'She Talks to Angels.' Good lesson.

  • hey justin- what is it exactly you put on your nails to grow them out like that? mine are too weak when i do fingerpicking and grind my nails down- is it a type of nail polish?

  • In previous videos he has said that he goes to a nail salon and get acrylic nails.

  • Diggin the vids. You sing too well to do Neil. :)

  • You look exacly like my Guitar Teacher

  • thanks justin you are always my favorite teacher

  • wow cool vocals justin, your the complete package now, vox and guitar chops........ alas iam neither!!

  • awesome i love this song

  • Wow justing, respect man not only am I extremely thankful you wanted to teach this song (I thought u only did wonderwall, which pissed me off abit because theres nothing special about playing it :p but decided that would be extremely ungrateful and lookie look i got rewarded :p) AND you did a really good cover too, you can hear you worked on your voice 't sounds real good. Thank you!

  • Really great tutorial, bro......

  • hey boss what is that on your left arm??

  • an arrow

  • lookin closely...it seems tat its just a shadow of sm overhead mic falling on his left arm...

  • isnt it an arrow no? well the end bit :/

  • Thanks Justin. One of my favourite Neil Young song. Even more impressive to hear it live !!!

A tiny request : could you make another Pearl Jam song besides Betterman ? ... you can pick any song you like ;-)

  • Of Justin, oh Justin, oh Justin ! One of my favourite songs and I've always had trougle in transcribing it. Thanks so much.

Neil Young's strumming is revolutionary, and that was really a clever idea to make this lesson.
