This entire song is about sex....probably the reason I love it so much (and sing the shit out of it whenever I get the chance....just ask my ex......)
June Christy's is still the standout version - check it out.
The lyrics are ALWAYS butchered (presumably the censor had something to do with it) Hart originally wrote ...wouldn't sleep/until I could sleep where I shouldn't sleep.
And nobody ever sings the great 3rd verse, the one that closes the musical.
it is IMPOSSIBLE(!!!) to find an mp3 of this song! i need to listen to it at least 5 times a day because it is one of the most beautiful renditions of this song i have ever heard.
you know for the longest time I thought this was a song for homosexual men although I loved it to death ever since I heard it on the closing credits of history boys. Only recently did I realize that Ella Fitzgerald sang it first. Anyways I absolutely adore this version of the song something about the way he sings it like he's out of breath or something like that.
Fantastic version. I'm so glad I didn't give up on the film before the credits or I may never have heard it. Words could have been written for Rufus or by Rufus Those guys could really write songs.
love this song and the movie. i cry listening to it now cause i use to sing it when i met my boyfriend now that he is gone i hear it and think of him.
Thank you so much for uploading this - I've been listening to it over and over until my copy of the soundtrack arrives. This version is beautiful and works so well with the film.
Hey, I love this song so much, but I can't find it to download anywhere at all. Could you find it in your heart to send me the mp3 please? If yes i'll send you a message or something with my email address.
Vanpants - you will always rule. I have looked for Rufus' version on You Tube forever, and was disappointed. Today, you made it happen for me. He never stops in my town. Maybe someday. . .
My Gosh, this is the song that made me aware of Rufus Wainwright. I loved the move "The History Boys" and appreciated the rendition of this song in the movie. When the credits ran, however, and I heard this beautiful sexy, smoky interpretation, I sought out the singer, and the rest is history. Cole Porter's songs were written with an ambiguous sexuality which I am sure caused him to chuckle. If he were still alive, I am he certain he would applaud Rufus' interpretation.
I hope you're enjoying the "horizontally speaking" bit. Ella Fitzgerald sings a beautiful version of this - and longer. The "trousers that cling to him" isn't usually sung. "Pants" would be usual in the US - it's not usually sung either
Haha thanks for the feedback. The Ella Fitzgerald version is good too but wasn't the version I was looking for at the time (I actually just uploaded this to link to my bf originally - and somehow it became my most popular video)
Excellent song - Actually nemzeti9 - thirty years ago men in the U.S. rarely used the word "pants" for men's clothing, "trousers" was the word used by men. One of the few advantages of being older is experiencing how language changes over time.
Thank you so much for posting this. Rufus Wainright has such a lovely voice and History Boys was an awesome movie. I just watched it and immediately came to listen to this song after contemplating watching the movie again. I've decided to wait a little while but I'll probably watch it again tonight. I feel like watching it again I would pick up a lot of other things. So beautiful! Thank you!
I love you I love you I love you! Do you know how long I've been waiting for someone to post this?!?! I finally got the soundtrack last week but then I couldn't figure out how to put the song up here! Did I mention yet that I love you? :) :) :)

Does anyone know the brand of the satchel/school bag Dakin carries in the film? I've been looking for a proper one and like the look and size of his.

Both Rufus Wainwright's and Samuel Barnett's versions are beautiful.
They are so different that there can't possibly be any kind of competition.

is it the Rufus version they use on the final credits of the History Boys film?

It sure is and that is when I discovered Rufus Wainwright, and the rest is history. Love the movie and love Rufus.

samuel barnett's was also very tender. rufus has the life experience to distill into it though.

Thank you for the correction. For some reason, I had connected it with the great Porter bio-movie "De-Lovely" with Kevin Kline. Who knows why?

@nemzeti9 Well Rufus is Canadian, trousers isn't used that often here. Maybe if this was just done for the movie, not sure.

@IamBen2 What's better than a slow dance to a classic tune? Rufus sings this song the way it should be sung - slow and sexy.
