  • why does the water turn purple? my text book says that the NaOH formed is suppesed o be a white solid

  • @flamezzzzzzz95 I think he had an indicator in the water, that's what our teacher did but the water was dark green when he mixed the indicator in.

  • Chemistry is INTERESTING and FUN!

  • my chem teacher did this but with a sh/t load more. he rolled it up in a compacted ball and dropped it in and ran.

  • it is kind of amusement !

  • i wish my chem professor was awesome enough to do this in class.

  • Awesome teacher? Come on my lab teacher did that last month.....

  • ... reminds me of PONG.

  • would have been funnier if those highschool students that droppped the fore arm size potassium into the lake, used cesium instead X)

  • Okie Dokie is perfect to say when throwing potassium in water.

  • how old are these students to study chemistry in your school??

  • We did this experiment in chemics lesson today. When cleaning up, there was still some sodium in a reaction tube, when we poored it in the sink it exploded, in my face. I was blinded for about 5 mnutes and couldnt hear a thing for about a minute. Kids, watch out with experiments, even when cleaning up, just... watch out :)

  • @drollerd96 at what age do your school start studying chemistry??

  • awesome professor

  • cool

  • BOOM ..,lol

  • nice teacher

  • Lol the teacher is soo cool

  • my chemistry teacher always said "you must not spit on sodium". I miss her.

  • cesium......arm sized.....in a huge bathtub........filled wif water throw em together and make a video XD

  • @StarCraftCrazy Maybe a Swimming Pool.

  • isn't it supposed to pop or explode?

  • Comment removed

  • This makes me want to take chemistry. Seriously.

  • how is the hissing sound produced?

  • @jambanIT Because it releases lots of hydrogen gas (that's also why it's burning when it reaches high temperature)

  • @jambanIT | since the reaction emits energy, the particles bump up together enough to cause it xD

  • /watch?v=6Rb_rDkwGnU

  • focus it

  • when my teacher did this she threw such a large chunk in it pop and crackled then it smashed the side of the glass and the water went all over the sheets she had prepared for us.

  • I wish my professor would do this!! All he so is talk and write on the board

  • good

  • did the sodium turn into a circle when it was dropped in water?

  • Reason why firemen want to know what's in your lab before they come. Spraying water is not a good idea. (Y) Epic.

  • omg my teacher only puts about the ammount of this full stop --> . <-- wow thats small

  • thumbs up for an awsome teacher

  • ur the best teacher i can notice it.

  • I wish I had a teacher like that

  • This guy is freaking hilarious lol

  • i like the teacher. he's funny :D

  • scientists are so sexy

  • im sooo weak at chemistry...but maybe i can learn from this video

  • awww this color <3 :D

  • This is why I took A Level chemistry!

  • I wish i had him as a teacher!!!!!!! that would be sooo cool!!!!

  • thats soo cool can you send me a jar of one of those metals?

  • I think he is a good teacher

  • *shakes fist* Dem kids are having way too much fun! Harumph!

  • KEWL TEACHER

  • wow that teacher is very funny , he knows how to get the totally atention of the people and make an awesome class

  • wow that teacher is very funny ,

  • why couldn't i have had a teacher like this in college let alone highschool?!?!

  • There are days when I regret that i went to Economics and not Chemistry, Electrical Technician or Cookery School ...and now it's too late to change back ='(

  • @Demenis007 It's never too late, you can always start here: khanacademy [dot] org / #chemistry (link altogether as an web address replacing [dot] with .)

I almost all of the years except the last one from highschool I had a shitty teacher, like others `complained',all she did was to talk and write on the board and was also like super fast not having patience to explain us even the basics, always saying we should of learned in elementary school but that did not stopped me into looking in chem

  • on ur table you forgat francium

  • Great video, though it sounds like a sitcom. lolz :P

  • Comment removed

  • i wish my lecturer was this cool

  • Damn i wanna be a pyro in training too...

  • saw this today in...epic.

  • HAHA - nice!

  • his awesome..

  • saw this in gr 10 high school in ottawa -_- boooring

  • what about francium?

  • @attkmast3r well, francium is radioactive and only about 30 grams of it actually exists on earth at any given moment... also it would asplode you

  • we did this in honors chem today... i love blowing shit up... in fact gonna play with some thermite soon :D

  • @theULTIMATEanswer42 try not to knock it off the table

  • This is pretty basic chemistry, surprising to see it in a lecture environment.

  • I would seriously sign up for that class!

  • people in Canada must have really boring lives.

  • the prof is wrong its not the metal on fire its the hydrogen that is

  • HAHAHA, he's awesome :D

  • SMOKE ON THE WATER!!!!!

  • what class is this?

  • wish hed be my freakin teacher; our current one is nothing like this...

  • that is an awesome professor

  • that was so cool. its awsome when you have a teacher thats funny as heck and thats willing to get in trubble(or hurt) for your amusment. =)

  • We did this today with a tiny sliver. In a lot of states High School's can't use large pieces of sodium because in one state (can't remember) some kids stole some sodium out of the science wing, and put it in a drinking fountain.

You can probably guess what happened.

  • yooooooo!!!!

  • Now i feel like taking some chemistry class

    it seems like fun

  • we did a sodium + water experiment in science class and it made a pretty loud boom :) - everyone was coughing afterwards because of all the hydrogen gas in the room

  • I'm surprised the large piece of potassium didn't cause a huger problem, like shattering the beaker! There were holes in the carpet! Gosh!

  • oooooo FIIIIIIIRE Claps*

  • I want to see him do this with Cesium...

  • oh man how lame. our teacher used a fish tank and a huge chunk and it made a huge explosion lol.

  • my teacher did a bigger piece of sodium and when i exploded, it was so loud.

  • ESPLODY!!!

haha I've done this in chem lab before. Awesome fun ^_^

  • where can I get alkaline metals?

  • I can't believe we get boring teachers that make us do busy work, while people like that guy are making water light things on fire! Damn, I feel so ripped off.

  • Try arm size of cesium in water!

  • Holy-Terrorist:>*=* Try alliage sodium-potassium liquid in water !

  • my chemistry teacher did this the first day of class.. I am excited =)

  • he should be my teacher that would be awesome :D

  • wooow...terrible.. really

  • Why I didn't have a teacher like that??? very interesting and fun to watch!

  • Hydrogen is an alkali metal and would be weaker than lithium, the only issue is that it requires intense cold and extremly high pressure in order for it to become a metal.

  • I would NEVER sleep in this guy's class!

  • i wanna see the arm size sodium video.

  • Hot DAMN I wish this guy were my chem teacher xD

  • college kids= pyros in training

  • beaker looks upsidedown

  • looks like it would taste good.

  • awh man he could do stand up... looks at the table... thats the kinda thing i get in trouble for

  • GOOD TEACHER

  • BUT, will it blend? That is the question...

  • haha, click soccer ball at 3:43!!!!

  • what, do you wanna see me die?

lol i would love to have him as a teacher.

  • spraying water is not a good idea LoL

  • bad camera angle on potassium

  • this teacher is pretty cool

  • Ah, now my big question is: WHY does Sodium and Potassium react so much with water?

  • @Zangoose000 it release flammable hydrogen gas.

  • @MeMbErOfZiT

That's what the reaction created not why the reaction exists at such a low temperature.

  • the part where he took away all hydrogen and didn't let the explosion happen was really not cool :/

  • Mr. Derrin Is BETTER

  • omg i want this teacher

  • thats fuckin awesome! so that means that if you ingest pure sodium or potassium, you'll catch fire inside your body or your mouth?

  • WOW! that popped and just instantly burned the table? crazy!

  • oily liquid? FAIL thats oil to stop the sodium from reacting with oxygen/water vapor and creating sodium hydroxide..

  • Man i got a awesome teacher like this..Hes a good man!Name is Roy Orbin. We was doing things like this in his class and i got my test A+ lol then he let me put some potassium in some water and i burnt my arm still its fun though,Science requires sacrifice

  • I wish i was in that class. The teacher is very knowledgeable and kinda humorous. :D

  • this teacher is so good n cool he reminds me of my chem teacher, Mrs Brown

  • dude you need to find yourself a girl

  • I wish he was my science teacher^^

  • It really shows how a good teacher is priceless when it comes to learning! He shows his enthusiasm and his students feed off of it!

  • My teacher also shown us that on Science lesson ^_^

  • 4:31 - You can really see the shininess of the bare sodium.

  • My 1A class sucked dick, I wished I had profs like this.

  • cool teacher :D

    lol

  • this teacher is so awesome man!!!

  • What indicator did he use?

  • @0P1kachu Phenoltalin (Dont know how to spell that, but yeah)

  • hahahahah he's awesome

  • wow... that stuff's dangerous.

  • i like his humour

  • coooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

  • haha he looks like an epic teacher :D

  • lol... i added too much Na to wather on my chem class.. so it boomed my teachers eyes... the bowl broke and a peace of glass -------> in the eye.. :D (he didnt weared glasses) :)

  • "do you wanna see me die?"

..."ok, let's put the bigger piece in."

    rofl

  • That teacher just made me like chemistry after hating it for years! thank u whoever you are :D

  • In my country Na is called Νάτριο and K κάλιο. :D

  • @TheDragotic In Russian Na is also Natrij and K is Kalij =)))English people found that potassium souns scientifically jajaja=))

  • it is so easyer to learn chemichal signs in my country etc Na (sodium) to me it is Natriij xD

  • Thats the kind of thing I get in trouble for .... hahahaha

  • cool teacher and very nice experiences

  • i stole sme sodium from my school ... and during the class I spit on it ... it burst in flames ... bigger than here .. and rised up

  • lol cool!

  • he would be an epic teacher ^^

  • @max16

There is a difference between teaching at school and at a college: college students choose chemistry. In school there is often only a few people interested in science.

But I agree, he is a good teacher and obviously entertains while providing some knowledge in nice told anecdotes. He reminds me of my professor some years back, who was almost 62 years old but still very funny and enthusiastic.

  • @bonham1981 he just reminds me of my old science teacher.. we missed the bus to the city so he took us across the road to the fish and chip joint :P

  • @max16 my teacher does this :D sooooooo fun!

  • @allthatimages

this video is not for retarded ones

  • it shure isn't , that is some heavy shit sience dude ..

  • Hi everybody! :)

I just need to know wich indicator did he used?

    does it was phenolphthalein??

    thanks a lot :)

hola! necesito saber si el indicador que el maestro aplico fue fenolftaleína. gracias!

    saludos desde México

  • yes,phenolphthalein

  • thanks!

    : )

  • @WilsonUtube123 si, fue fenolftaleina

  • LOL we did that this week, big piece of potassium into a big bucket of water.. the potassium burned through the plastic bucket!! doooope

  • If it produces hydrogen, why is it alkaline ?

  • Because when elemental Sodium is introduced with water it ionizes with the water. With the exchange of electrons water decomposes into molecular hydrogen gas and delivers hydroxide ions. In laws of le chatliers principle with regarding equilibrium, OH- is the strongest base that can exist, hence there will be 100% ionization in water leaving the sodium ions neglible to the fact that the alkalinity has been increased drastically.

  • why dissolving sodium chloride in water does not produce this reaction ? why electrolysis of sodium chloride does not cause exothermic effect ? when sodium is separated should it not react with water ?

  • wow he's funny for a teacher :) got a nice sense of humour.

  • Awesome !!

  • ................

    AWESOME

  • Thanx 4 this i needed a good one for hmwrk :]

  • Good teacher with humorous style!

    I wanna have one too!

  • my chem techer is ex military. For a project, he had us explain how a flare worked and make a mixture that would work in a flare.

  • I wish my teacher was like him, mines bored as fuk.

  • wow hope i get a teach like hime

  • this guy should be teaching 7th grade classes to get kids into learning....get them interested while they are young...also this guy is cool..we need more teachers like this

  • *snors*

  • in response to his story at about 6:10 of the sodium arm sized piece, he says it sank and took a few minutes, sodium wouldn't sink, it'd float..... weird

  • The impact off the bridge would make it sink and then it would slowly rise to the top. The reaction would probably occur before then (if its a few seconds and not a few minutes)

  • this guy is cool

  • where are hiis gloves :P

    haha.

& ii wishh our unii instructors demonstrated stuff liek dat ..!

    ourz are so boriiiiiiiiiing.

  • my teacher was talking about a student teacher he had that thought he would show off so he did this experiment and he thought it was not working cuz the metle had lots off oil on it so he put a big chunk in and it made a big exploion and the fir department came and he almost brunt the school down well lets just say he never became a teacher after that

    lol

  • Does anyone know where you can get this if you aren't a science teacher or anything??

  • Ebay, you can buy pure sodium and stuff

  • haha, this guy looks like a great teacher
